  1. Sarah Champion makes apology for newspaper commentspublished at 06:39 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion has apologised for any offence caused to the British Pakistani community over her "extremely poor choice of words" in a Sun newspaper article.

Yesterday she stepped down from Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet.

She has been vocal in speaking out about child sexual exploitation since it was revealed that 1,400 young women and girls had been abused in Rotherham, where she's been the MP since 2012.

After 17 British Pakistani men were convicted over child abuse in Newcastle last week she said there was a problem within that particular community.

The Rotherham MP wrote in the Sun on Friday that "Britain has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls".

She has now apologised for her "extremely poor choice of words" and quit as shadow equalities minister.

She's since distanced herself from those comments and said the newspaper altered her words.
