    York City Knights captain Ed Smith has been ruled out for about nine months, the club has confirmed.

    Smith's been diagnosed with ligament damage and will need surgery.

    He was injured in the league win over Workington last month.

    The funeral of the man who tried to save the life of murdered West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox has been taking place this lunchtime.

    Bernard Kenny was stabbed as he intervened when Thomas Mair attacked Mrs Cox in Birstall in 2016.

    Mair stabbed Mrs Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen, 15 times and shot her three times.

    Mr Kenny was seriously injured in the attack.

    During Mair's trial, Mr Kenny told the court he had been waiting for his wife by the library in Birstall when he saw right-wing extremist Mair going "berserk".

    He said he thought he could jump on his back and "could take him down" but was then stabbed in the stomach.

    After the attack more than 80,000 people signed an online petition calling for Mr Kenny to be awarded the George Cross for his bravery.

    Mr Kenny, who died last week, had been suffering from cancer.

    Leeds-based airline Jet2 is advertising 1,700 new jobs, with the firm looking for pilots, cabin crew and ground staff.

    The airline says it's going to hold roadshows across the UK to find the people it needs, with about 300 of the roles set to be based at Leeds Bradford Airport.

    Jet2 says it's currently the third biggest airline in the UK and any new cabin crew members will be expected to proved "a VIP service" to customers.

    A man from West Yorkshire has been treated for the effects of breathing in smoke after he went back into his burning house to rescue his dogs.

    The fire happened this morning at a house on Lydgate Park in Brighouse when a boiler caught fire.

    As the house was burning, the man went back into the house to rescue his dogs and he had to be led to safety by firefighters.

    Fire officers say the man had smoke detectors fitted in his house.

    You may remember we told you that a fox was rescued earlier this week by firefighters in South Yorkshire.

  6. Listen: Queue-jumping campaign for emergency workerspublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

    A social media campaign calling for members of the emergency services to be allowed to jump long queues at cafes and takeaways in North Yorkshire has been shared hundreds of times.

    It's after paramedic Jacqui Pound, from Harrogate, had to abandon her wait for food after getting called away.

    Gail Carpenter, from Ripon saw what happened and has put an appeal out on Facebook.

    She says: "If they can fast-track the emergency services for their fast food, they need their food to be fast. They are fast when we need them so we should repay them in kind."

    Police in Manchester want to speak to this man, who they think may live in Leeds, following a rape in the city:

    The appeal comes after a woman in her 40s was attacked in Didsbury after meeting a man in the early hours of 8 July.

    Police have just released the picture of the man they want to speak to as part of their investigation into the rape and are asking anyone with information to get in touch.

  8. Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder over Oxspring crashpublished at 12:24

    A man who was driving a car with four children on board which crashed into a pub wall in South Yorkshire has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police have confirmed.

    The crash, which didn't involve any other vehicle, happened at about 12:15 on Wednesday morning in the Oxspring area of Barnsley, at the junction of Bower Hill and Coates Lane.

    All four passengers - two girls aged seven and eight and two boys aged nine months and 21 months - remain in a serious condition, external in hospital.

    The 29-year-old man driving the car was also taken to hospital where he currently remains in a stable condition.

    He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

    Last night, he was further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains under police custody at this time, police say.

    A North Yorkshire Police property marking scheme which has involved visits to allotments, golf clubs and supermarkets has now seen officers visiting perhaps their most unusual venue yet:

    Officers marked tools and other building equipment in the Grade II-listed Groves Wesleyan Chapel in York,.

    PC Toby Gorwood and PCSO Jason Brooks visited the 130-year-old church in Clarence Street, which is currently being converted to a supermarket.

    Middle-aged people are being urged to walk faster to help stay healthy, amid concern high levels of inactivity may be harming their health.

    Officials at Public Health England are urging those between the ages of 40 and 60 to start doing regular brisk walks.

    They say just 10 minutes a day could have a major impact, reducing the risk of early death by 15%.

    As part of the research, Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University have developed an app to show how much brisk walking a person is doing each day.

    Gareth Jones, a researcher at Sheffield Hallam, says if people can see the amount of physical activity they've done it can help motivate them to do more:

    Leeds United have signed NEC Nijmegen forward Jay-Roy Grot for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

    The 19-year-old scored five goals in 20 Eredivisie games last season.

    The Netherlands Under-19 international could make his debut for the Whites in Saturday's trip to Nottingham Forest.

    Teenagers trying to get into pubs and clubs in Halifax to celebrate or commiserate over their GCSE results today are being warned they face a clampdown.

    A meeting to discuss the issue of underage drinkers was held earlier this week at which it was decided there should be a "joint approach" between police and the owners of licensed premises.

    Any fake identification seeming to show teenagers to be older than they actually are will be disposed of, warn police.

    Town Centre Ward Officer PC Michelle Cheney says: "We know that there will be a lot of young people looking to celebrate their exam results this week, however a large proportion of those getting GCSE examination results won't be 18.

    "Anyone stopped with identification that is clearly not theirs will have it confiscated. It will be held for 48 hours, and the user of the identification will be given a receipt so that a parent or guardian can collect it."

    Kasabian are still expected to headline Leeds Festival this weekend despite the band's singer collapsing before a gig on Tuesday.

    The band postponed a performance in Belfast on Tuesday night moments before they were due on stage after Tom Meighan was struck down by a bug.

    In a statement on Twitter, the band said they were "absolutely gutted" to cancel the show at Custom House Square after Meighan "suddenly went down with severe vomiting and could hardly stand up let alone sing".

    The band are due to headline the Leeds Festival on Saturday.

    At about 12:35 on Tuesday 6 June, the victim, a 69-year-old man, was on High Street, when he was approached by a man who then allegedly shouted racial abuse before assaulting him. The victim was kicked in the chest and face, leaving him with serious facial injuries.

  18. 'Put money in thy purse': Pop-up Shakespeare 'could give York £7m boost'published at 10:21 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

    Plans to build a pop-up Shakespearean Theatre in York's Castle Car Park could bring in £7m to the city, according to City of York Council.

    The plans to build a full-scale working replica of a traditional Shakespearean Theatre next year in a bid to transport audiences back to the 16th century could be given the go-ahead next week.

    The 12-sided theatre would be in place between May and September on a car park next to York's famous Clifford's Tower in the city centre.

    A ex-British army soldier from Leeds has been charged with terrorism offences in Turkey, the BBC understands.

    Joe Robinson, 24, was with his fiancee and her mother when they were arrested in the coastal town of Didim last month.

    The women were released, but Mr Robinson remains in jail.

    He is accused of joining the Kurdish militia group the YPG, who are fighting so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria.
