Following yesterday's flash floods in Scarborough, Valley road in the town is closed in both directions between Grosvenor Road and Ramshill Road while roadworks are carried out.

    Valley Rd

I've been speaking to an engineer from North Yorkshire County Council who tells me it's due to small sections of the top layer of the road being lifted up by the force of the water.

At the moment, engineers are assessing the extent of the damage and it's not known how long repairs will take.

Watch this video to see how the flash floods in Scarborough turned some of the town's streets into fast-flowing rivers. Thanks to Miles Jackson for sending us the film:

  2. Cost of Sheffield tree protests falls on contractors not taxpayerspublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

The contract being used by Sheffield City Council to fell thousands of trees in the city states the authority is not liable for extra costs caused by people protesting against the programme, according to an examination by the Yorkshire Post, external.

About 5,500 trees have been felled in Sheffield since the start of a £2.2bn 25-year Streets Ahead programme of works, having been assessed as either dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory - meaning restricting access or otherwise unhelpfully placed. They are being replaced with saplings.

However, campaigners claim many of the trees classed as damaging or discriminatory are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.

Last week, Sheffield City Council won a High Court injunction to stop campaigners taking direct action to prevent the work.

Councillor Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for the environment, told BBC Radio Sheffield last week that the authority had "a responsibility to the taxpayers of Sheffield to do everything we can to avoid catastrophic financial consequences if the Streets Ahead work is not completed by the end of the year".

But an examination of the Streets Ahead contract by The Yorkshire Post, external shows the terms state any loss of income relating to protests should be borne by contractors Amey, who are carrying out the tree-felling work, and not the council.

  9. Listen: York MP calls for review after flash flood chaospublished at 07:43 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

The clean-up's continuing in Scarborough this morning after flash flooding on Wednesday saw firefighters called to nearly 60 incidents in just two hours.

    Flood

And in York, where heavy rain also caused flooding, the city's sewage system has come in for scrutiny.

Yorkshire Water says it was a rare instance and once the water has subsided they'll be out with "special cameras to see if there are any blockages or defects".

But Rachael Maskell, York's Labour MP, says someone needs to "take responsibility" for dealing with the issue:
