    A woman was sexually assaulted by a man who followed her into a ginnel.

    Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the attack in Heckmondwike, near Dewsbury, to come forward.

    The incident happened between 20:30 and 21:30 on Wednesday along a ginnel next to the Health Centre near to Union Street.

    The woman had been to a nearby shop when she entered the ginnel and was followed by the man who attacked her.

    He is in his mid 20s to early 30s, 5ft 6ins tall and with brown hair .

    He was wearing light blue jeans and a blue jumper.

    Greenwoods the menswear and formal hire firm has gone into administration but is continuing to trade.

    The company, which has its headquarters in Bradford, said it had appointed Deloitte as administrators.

    The firm has 63 stores across the UK including one in Harrogate and Selby.

    The administrators said they were "assessing options" for the company and no redundancies had been confirmed.

  3. South Yorkshire gets a dozen new firefighterspublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    The biggest batch of South Yorkshire firefighter recruits, external in eight years has successfully graduated following 13 weeks of intensive training.

    The group of 12 full-time firefighters have completed their training with South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and will now join crews at fire stations around the county.

    The George Cross awarded to a heroic train driver is to be displayed in York.

    The National Railway Museum spent £60,000 on the medal awarded posthumously to train driver Wallace “Wally” Oakes who stayed aboard a burning locomotive cab to prevent a serious accident.

    On 5 June, 1965 Mr Oakes saved the lives of hundreds of passengers on the West Coast Mainline at Winsford outside Crewe.

    After setting off from Crewe station at the controls of the ‘Britannia’ class steam locomotive Firth of Forth, which was pulling an express passenger train from Euston to Carlisle, a severe blowback filled the cabin with smoke and flames.

    Mr Oakes suffered severe burns in the incident but remained at the controls while the engine was ablaze to bring the train to halt, protecting his passengers from harm.

    Wallace received 80 per cent burns and later died of his injuries.

    His fireman Gwilym Roberts was also badly injured but managed to jump clear and summon medical help.

    He provided a first-hand account of Wallace’s heroism which led to the posthumous award of the George Cross on 19 October 1965.

    The medal was introduced by King George VI and is the highest civilian honour. Only six railway workers have received the George Cross making it extremely rare.

    Wallace’s medal was bought by the museum for £60,000 at auction, equalling the record for railway memorabilia which was set in 2003 with the sale of the A4 Pacific locomotive nameplate "Golden Fleece".

    As well as the George Cross, the lot also includes a Carnegie Medal and a British Railways citation recognising Wallace Oakes’ great bravery.

  7. Thousands sign petition calling for criminal charges over Rotherham abuse scandalpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    More than three thousand people have signed a petition, external calling for criminal charges to be brought in relation to the Rotherham abuse scandal.

    Earlier this week a report recommended no legal or disciplinary action against any senior officers or former members of the council.

    South Yorkshire Police have released CCTV footage, external after an attempted sexual assault on Sutherland Road in Sheffield.

    Just after 05:00 on Sunday 13 August a 23-year-old woman was dragged into some bushes before a man attempted to assault her.

    Police describe the man as black, in his mid-20s, of a medium build and wearing dark clothes and a hat.

    Officers also want to speak to four men who helped the victim after the assault.

    Tomorrow is the last opportunity you have to see proposals for new road access to the proposed York Central development.

    The site is a brownfield site near York's railway station. It links to the railway sidings which were part of the former York carriageworks site.

    York Central Partnership says the proposed development would create new residential neighbourhoods, office space, leisure facilities, green space and public amenities.

    The site is land locked so they need to consider building an access road. You can see the plans at the National Railway Museum from 12:00 to 16:00.

    A public consultation ends on Wednesday 13 September.

  10. Attempted murder charges after gun incidentpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    A man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after a gun was fired in Dewsbury.

    Philip Nriapia, aged 43, of Ravens Avenue, Scout Hill in Dewsbury, has been charged in relation to an incident on Tuesday 29 August, when police responded to a call where a firearm had been discharged on Ravenshouse Road and a 25-year-old man was injured.

    He is due to appear at Kirklees Magistrates' Court.

    How do you fancy helping a team of archaeologists at the site of Northallerton prison?

    The prison in Northallerton has been a feature of life in the town for more than 200 years. but that came to an end in December 2013. The site will be redeveloped over the next few years.

    York Archeological Trust are now trying to discover as much as they can before development starts.

    If you don't fancy digging there's a chance to have a tour round the prison before it is redeveloped. You can pop along on Saturday 16 and 30 September. Doors open at 11:00 with last admission at 15:00.

  12. Armed robbers hunted after raidpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Armed robbers held up a shop in Mirfield with a gun.

    Detectives have now released a CCTV image of two men they want to trace following the robbery in the West Yorkshire town.

    Two masked men, armed with what appeared to be a handgun, went into a shop on The Knowl and threatened a member of staff before fleeing.

    They are thought to have fled along Nab Lane on to Fox Royd Lane following the incident on Wednesday, 26 July, at about 20:30.

    Both are white and were wearing dark clothing, including black hooded tops. There were of average build and about 5ft 6in tall.

    Some call it the "Ryder Cup" of ten pin bowling.

    Well the 18th annual Weber Cup, external has come to Barnsley this weekend.

    The event is Europe v America ten pin bowling challenge and features the best bowlers from both sides of the Atlantic.

    This is the 12th year the competition, which is broadcast live on Sky Sports in 70 countries, has come to the Barnsley Meterodome.

    There are just 50 days until Leeds hands in a bid to be named European Capital of Culture 2023.

    The team behind the bid says the support has already exceeded expectations.

    Major city events like the West Indian Carnival, International Film Festival and Light Night, have seen members of the public pledge their support.

    Cluny Macpherson, who's from the bid team, says they're delighted with the numbers who've joined their online campaign.

    Sheffield company SCX Special Projects, external is building the first retractable sports pitch of its kind in the UK for Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium.

    The 61,000-capacity venue is due to open in 2018.

    The stage production of BBC Radio Leeds drama Partition will be performed for the first time later at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. It tells the story of how the splitting of India affected two families in 1947.

    The play is a collaboration between the theatre and the radio station.

    Its writer Nick Ahad, external from BBC Radio Leeds says seeing a radio play performed live is far from boring.

    A new Viking-themed bar has officially opened in York.

    Valhalla, which means hall of the slain, serves food and drink in a Viking setting.

    It's been set up by two York friends Matthew Bedingham and Vincent Roberts.

    Like all good ideas, Vincent says they came up with a plan one night in the pub.

    South Yorkshire Police says the number of seizures of the drug Spice has increased in the last year.

    Spice is produced in a lab with a number of often unknown chemicals, aimed at replicating the effects of cannabis.

    In a statement South Yorkshire Police Inspector Matt Collins said: "Since last year, the number of seizures officers have made of the psychoactive substance known as Spice, has increased".
