    Nick Wilmshurst

The suspicious package in Leeds Kirkgate Market today turned out to be nothing to do with terrorists - but why did it take so long to declare it safe?

Ch Supt Paul Money from West Yorkshire Police explains:"We always treat any incident of this nature very seriously, particularly given recent events and the nationwide heightened focus of the threat of terrorism.

“This morning we quickly put appropriate measures in place to keep people safe while this incident was dealt with.

Criminals posing as police officers have been trying to con people out of money and jewellery in Kirklees.

West Yorkshire Police have released details of an occasion where the con men were successful earlier this month.

A Dewsbury Moor woman in her 20s had a call from someone who claimed to be from a bank, who told her money had been taken from her account and that a police officer was being sent around to collect her cash and jewellery for safekeeping.

Then a man dressed as a police officer arrived at her house and she handed over thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.

Earlier this summer the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in the Branton area of Doncaster submitted plans to double the size of its site.

If approved the £50 million expansion will allow space for more animals, a hotel, shops and a new link road, plus create around 300 new jobs but local residents are concerned that this part of South Yorkshire is already over developed.

The park's chief executive Cheryl Williams thinks the proposals will only be a benefit:

  17. Leeds suspicious package causes quiet streets and surrounding congestionpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 20 September 2017

The cordon around Leeds Kirkgate Market is still in place, closing off the roads around it making the usual bustling streets eerily quite for the time of day.

This is obviously having a knock-on effect for journeys around the city centre with major routes like York Street closed.

Many bus travellers around the station are confused this afternoon and don't know where to catch their buses from, compounded by major delays on the network:
