    If you remember the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper you'll know the investigation became side-tracked following a series of letters and a tape from a hoaxer known as "Wearside Jack" .

    The hoaxer, a man called John Humble from Sunderland, was eventually arrested and jailed in 2006.

    Detective Sergeant Stuart Smith was one of the leading officers involved in the case and his police medals and letters of commendation have gone under the hammer for £400.

    The University of Leeds has been named the best university in the north.

    The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 published this weekend says that "Leeds has more going for it than just nightclubs and shopping malls."

    The paper says that Leeds is one of the most popular universities for both students and employers and is in the top three Russell Group institutions for student satisfaction.

    Yorkshire has a strong representation in the top-ten list with the University of York in second place and the University of Sheffield in third.

  4. York hospice patient raises 30kpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    A patient at St Leonard's Hospice in York has raised more than £30,000 for the charity this year.

    Nicky Howard (pictured above right) raised the money through a combination of friends and family donations, a charity garden party and a sponsored Yorkshire Warrior challenge.

    She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 at the age of 40 when her children were five and 17.

    Her eldest son Jack (pictured above left) decided he wanted to help with some fundraising and took part in the Yorkshire Warrior event, a 20km obstacle course.

    His younger brother Archie, (pictured below) did his bit, too, completing the 2km obstacle course with his friends, Jacob, Elliot and Luke.

    Dawn Clements, director of fundraising at the hospice, said: "We are overwhelmed by the hard work Nicky has put in - and all while undergoing treatment for cancer."

    For the first time in their history, York City and Harrogate town are playing each other in a league match.

    Harrogate are currently flying high at the top of the National League North - and York City aren't far behind but they're still reeling after being relegated two years in a row.

    York City manager Gary Mills says he's been working to combat what he sees as an advantage for Harrogate Town by having his players train on a 3G surface.

    He's told his players they must rise to the challenge of gaining a result on the Wetherby Road outfit’s artificial pitch and ensure their passing is precise.

    A man who was found collapsed in the street in Barnsley last night is critically ill.

    He and another man were found on Mottram Street, near the town centre.

    Police think they'd both taken drugs.

    The man in hospital is 55, while the second man, who's 47, has been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

    A woman's poem about caring for her mother is the first winner of a competition in memory of murdered West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox.

    Catherine Graham's poem The Washing Machine was written about her mum, Doris, who she spent 10 years caring for.

    The Jo Cox Poetry Prize was run by Carers UK as part of the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness.

    Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox, who was killed in June 2016, was a keen campaigner against loneliness.

    Ms Graham (pictured), from Newcastle, said she was "proud and humbled" to win the contest.

    A former University of York student who appeared on the BBC TV quiz show University Challenge has been cleared of raping a woman in her halls of residence.

    Bartholomeo Joly de Lotbiniere, 22, was found not guilty of charges of rape and assault by penetration following a retrial at Bradford Crown Court.

    The woman, now 22, went to police after seeing him appear on the television programme a year later.

    She said she saw a tweet by Pointless host Richard Osman about the defendant's name and "just got angry and upset".

  11. More arrests over Sheffield United match violencepublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    Five more people have been arrested in connection with trouble during and after the Sheffield United game at Middlesborough last month.

    Children as young as 10 were injured as fighting broke out following Middlesbrough's 1-0 home win over Sheffield United.

    Earlier this week five Sheffield United fans were handed banning orders and were released under investigation.

    Four of the latest arrests by Cleveland Police are for public order offences and one is for assaulting a police officer.

    Cleveland Police said: "Inquiries into the disorder are ongoing, with support from South Yorkshire Police and both football clubs."

    Plans for a £300m development for part of Leeds city centre have been unveiled.

    The new neighbourhood, called SOYO, or South of York Road, will include 500 apartments, a hotel, independent bars and restaurants and a new public space for outdoor performances.

    It is the first major scheme on that particular site since the Quarry Hill flats were demolished in the 1970s.

    A 29-year-old man has denied attempting to kill four children in a car crash in Barnsley.

    Owen Scott was arrested after a car he was driving crashed into a pub at Oxspring near Penistone last month.

    Four children were in the vehicle - two girls, aged seven and eight, and two boys aged 21 months and nine months.

    They were all taken to hospital in a serious condition with injuries described as "not all thought to be consistent with the collision", by police.

    Mr Scott, of Heather Road, Fawley, Hampshire, appeared by videolink at Sheffield Crown Court this morning.

    He pleaded not guilty to four counts of attempted murder and also denied dangerous driving.

    He'll go on trial in Sheffield on 29 January and has been remanded in custody.

    Wondering if the A1(M) northbound between J48 and J49 is still closed?

    Well the bad news is that it is, and according to Highways England it looks set to stay that way until 16:00.

    You're being advised to avoid the northbound A1(M) if you can after the earlier crash between two lorries.

    There is a diversion in place, but there are delays of around 10 minutes as you approach closed section.

    Finding a job when you've been in prison can be tough enough, but add dyslexia and other learning difficulties to that and the challenge gets much tougher.

    A project that helps such people in Doncaster has moved to bigger premises and says it can now support more people.

    The Cascade Foundation, external, which is based next to Marshgate Prison, helps ex-prisoners and was set up by Jackie Hewitt-Main, external, who herself struggled with dyslexia.

    Ex-prisoner Dale, who spent 22 years in jail, has told me that Cascade has changed his life and he calls Jackie "The Angel":

    North Yorkshire Police say five people are facing charges stemming from an anti-fracking demonstration at Kirby Misperton.

    Here are the charges:

    An 18-year-old woman has been charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of her duty, and assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty.

    A 26-year-old woman has been charged with obstructing a police officer.

    A 33-year-old man has been charged with obstructing the highway.

    A 35-year-old woman has been charged with obstructing the highway.

    A 44-year-old woman has been charged with obstructing the highway.

    All five will appear at York Magistrates Court next month.

    A man wearing a balaclava and armed with a screwdriver is thought to be behind two robberies carried out within half an hour of each other in Sheffield earlier this week.

    The first was at Birley Moor News in Frechville at about 07:30 on Tuesday morning. The next target was a branch of McColls in Woodhouse soon afterwards.

    The man left the first store empty-handed and got away with cash from the second.

    In both instances, the suspect was wearing a black balaclava, a dark top and dark tracksuit bottoms.

    Det Con Michael Walker says: "Thankfully no-one was hurt in either of the incidents, however both members of staff were left very shaken."

    Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

  19. Bramham Iron Age skeletons go on display in Leedspublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    A pair of Iron Age human skeletons, found next to the A1 near Bramham 10 years ago go on display at Leeds City Museum later.

    Both were drawn up into the foetal position and placed alongside each other having died in about the first century AD.

    Once the location of a late Iron Age settlement, Wattle Syke was the resting place of a man, aged about 25 to 35, and a woman over 45.

    They were found during archaeological excavations in 2007 and 2008.

    Kat Baxter, Leeds Museums and Galleries curator of archaeology, said: "The truth is we'll never know exactly why these two were buried together. Perhaps they had a special relationship or they were related?

    Also part of the exhibition are the remains of a medieval female religious hermit from the Church of All Saints in Fishergate, York.

  20. Digital boost for Leeds-Manchester rail servicespublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    Technology used on the London Underground is to be introduced on trans-Pennine rail services in a bid to improve reliability and speed up journeys between Leeds and Manchester.

    The move is due to be announced by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, who's expected to announced a £5m boost for Network Rail to look into using digital signalling technology.

    It's the same technology which currently allows tube trains to run closer together.

    It's the latest in a series of changes to the trans-Pennine route with work already under way to cut journey times between Leeds and Manchester to 40 minutes.

    Mr Grayling is also expected to say in a speech in Manchester later that the government will continue looking into electrifying the line.
