  2. Bradford man charged with terrorism offencespublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    A man from Bradford has been charged with two terrorism offences.

    Farooq Rashid, 42, of Ducy Crescent, is charged with disseminating a terrorist publication and possessing a publication likely to be useful to a terrorist.

    He was arrested last October and initially bailed until February, then re-bailed until September.

    Mr Rashid has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court later.

  4. Traffic and Travel: A1(M) northbound delays - 'Trapped traffic allowed to disperse'published at 09:39 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    The A1(M) northbound between junction 48 (Boroughbridge) and junction 49 (Dishforth) will remain closed until further notice, police have confirmed.

    However, lane three of the carriageway is expected to re-open at about 10:00 to allow "trapped traffic to disperse", police say.

    However, motorists are still being advised to avoid the area if possible following a collision between two lorries earlier this morning.

    Drivers currently travelling northbound on the A1(M) are advised to leave at junction 46 and use the diversion on to the A168, rejoining the A1(M) at junction 49.

    Letters thought to be soaked in drugs are being photocopied by prison officers, with the copies handed to inmates instead, a new report into a Yorkshire jail has revealed.

    Bogus legal mail - letters purporting to be from prisoners' legal representatives which are actually impregnated with drugs - is a "significant problem" at Wealstun Prison, near Wetherby, the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) report says, external.

    The Prison Service has seen a rise in complaints from prisoners at the Category C jail, as legal mail is not supposed to go unopened to prisoners, according to the report.

    Both prisoners and officers have been hospitalised following an increased level of violence caused by psychoactive substances at the prison, the IMB report adds.

    When Sheffield's football teams meet there's always a special atmosphere, however such games between United and Wednesday also increase the risk of trouble between fans.

    With that in mind, there's due to be a big police presence this coming weekend - with about 300 officers set to be at Hillsborough for Sunday's Championship clash, the first time the two sides have met since 2012.

    The South Yorkshire force says the vast majority of fans will be there to enjoy the game - and for those who don't, Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber has this message:

    Drivers are being warned they could be waiting up to an hour and 20 minutes to get through the affected area.

  10. Anti-fracking protests expected to continue at Kirby Misperton sitepublished at 08:14 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    Demonstrations are expected to begin again later outside the gates of a site in North Yorkshire where fracking is expected to get under way by the end of the year.

    Yesterday saw one person injured and five arrested during protests near the site at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

    Police have now arrested a total of 12 people in the past two days as campaigners attempt to prevent equipment getting on to the site.

    North Yorkshire Police says its officers will continue to talk to demonstrators, but will take action if they break the law.

    There's been a significant increase in the number of referrals to the NSPCC children's charity in Yorkshire and Humber, it's been revealed.

    The charity made 450 referrals to child protection agencies in the region last year following reports of children being affected by domestic abuse - a 28% increase from the previous year.

    Overall, the RSPCC says it received nearly 5,000 calls reporting domestic abuse across the UK in 2016-17.

    Campaigners wanting funding for a Doncaster domestic violence charity have staged a protest inside a council meeting.

    Supporters of the Women's Aid charity held up a banner in Doncaster Council chamber reading: "You cut, we bleed".

    Campaigners want the council to fund the charity, which was set up after Doncaster Women's Aid closed its doors last April.

    The new group got going with a grant from the council of £30,000.

    The authority says it only ever promised the money as a start-up loan, but group members claim the council has sufficient money to help out as it has about £97m in reserves.

    Officers were called to reports of a crash involving two HGVs at about 05:00 this morning.Emergency services are working at the scene and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.Police are urging people to avoid the area, use alternative routes, and allow extra time for their journeys this morning.

    Officers at a West Yorkshire prison have photocopied letters sent to inmates over fears some mail may be soaked in drugs, according to a new report, external.

    Prisoners and officers have been hospitalised following an increased level of violence caused by psychoactive substances at the Category C HMP Wealstun, near Wetherby.

    An independent monitoring board report into the prison says many of the substances smuggled into prison come over the wall.

    But it added: "Where there is suspicion that incoming letters have been soaked in drugs, they are photocopied."
