    Police in York say they have arrested a 28-year-old local man after two women were sexually assaulted in York.

    The attacks have led to North Yorkshire Police warning women not to walk alone in the evening.

    One woman was walking along a track from Tang Hall towards James Street at 20:50 BST on Sunday when a man approached her and groped her.

    Officers investigating a burglary in Mosborough in Sheffield have these CCTV pictures of two men they want to trace.

    A handbag containing a mobile phone and two purses were reported stolen from a property on Bridle Stile following a burglary which happened sometime between Saturday 26 and Monday 28 August.

    Bankcards were later used to purchase items in and around the Crystal Peaks and Jordanthorpe areas of the city.

    Anyone with information is asked to report it to South Yorkshire Police, external via 101 quoting incident number 495 of 26 August. Anonymous information can also be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

    A man who has had his unicycle stolen in Leeds says he really wants to see the people who did it bought to justice.

    Robin Whitfield, 24, says his unicycle, which he uses every day to get around the city, was stolen from outside The Tetley on Saturday.

    He's had the bike for five years and even won the UK National Unicycle Road Race in Horwich on it this year, he said "it does mean quite a bit to me".

    Robin said "I think it will be almost impossible for the thief to sell on. I really want to see them caught as they've probably done this a lot before and they're going to mess a lot of people's lives up.

  5. Supertram death: Safety regime is 'strengthened' after investigation reportpublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Stagecoach, which operates Sheffield's Supertram, has said it's made changes to its safety regime after the death of an 81-year-old man, who was hit by a tram at Woodbourn Road in December 2016.

    The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau (RAIB), external has today recommended the operator should review its procedures for assessing the risk of collision with pedestrians.

    A spokesperson for Stagecoach Supertram said:

    "Our first thoughts remain with the loved ones of the pedestrian who died in the accident. Safety will always be our absolute priority and we have worked closely with the authorities to understand the full circumstances involved.

    "Since the incident, we have implemented a number of changes to strengthen our safety regime, as acknowledged in the RAIB report.

    "We are also committed to working with the wider industry to enhance safety at Supertram and other tram networks."

    A post office in Leeds was held up by armed robbers who made off with the till this morning.

    It happened at about 09:40 at Bramstan Post Office, Bramley when three masked men armed with metal bars walked in and threatened staff and customers.

    They stole the till from the counter and boxes of cigarettes before leaving the scene in a black Peugeot 207, which was later set on fire at the Abbey Inn on Pollard Lane.

    The men then ran off along the canal and dumped the till near Newlay Locks. Police are asking anyone who thinks they saw them to come forward.

    Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal is on the look out for people handy with needles and wool to knock them up a batch of donuts.

    The North Yorkshire theatre wants the woollen confections to use during 54 performances of The Wizard of Oz.

    It's not the first time hundreds of knitted objects have been incorporated into the show, often as ‘missiles’ to be hurled by the audience.

    The crafty tradition first started in 2011 when over 1,000 bananas were knitted for The Adventures of Sinbad; the following year nearly 3,000 white snowball pompoms were amassed for Babes in the Wood.

    Around 2,500 leaves were knitted to construct a huge decorative beanstalk for Jack and the Beanstalk and last year over 2,000 apples made their way onto the set of Snow White.

    How the doughnuts will actually be used in this year's show is top secret.

    Apparently finished doughnuts can be handed in at the Box Office.

    This morning it's been revealed there's been a dramatic rise in the number of vehicles being stolen in West Yorkshire.

    To celebrate their school's 50th birthday, staff and pupils at Worsborough Common Primary, external in Sheffield are dressing up in 60's fashions for an all day fancy dress party.

    As well as dressing up, pupils will also be experiencing lessons 60's style - learning how many pennies in a shilling and how many pints in a gallon - like the children in this photo from 1967.

    Police have released a picture of a York sex attack suspect as investigations continue into two other sexual assault incidents.

    The incident happened on Sunday when a woman in her 20s was grabbed by a man in the Melrosegate area of the city, but she managed to fight him off.

    The victim tried to get her attacker off her by pulling his hair. She bit him on the hand, shouted at him and hit him in the face.

    Police say the suspect is aged 19 to 20, 6ft 2in to 6ft 3in, slim build, with mousy brown, ear-length messy hair with a sweeping fringe, with a defined jaw line and a thin face.

    He was wearing black baggy bottoms and a black Superdry anorak with the hood up and Velcro fastenings under the chin.

    Police want to hear from anyone who recognises the man or have any information that could assist the investigation,

  11. Ashes 2017: Yorkshire Cricketer Gary Ballance has made England Squadpublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Yorkshire Cricketer Gary Ballance has been named in the England squad for the upcoming Ashes tour.

    Ballance suffered a broken finger in the second Test defeat by South Africa in July and his recall had been in doubt.

    England, who were whitewashed 5-0 on their last tour of Australia, are looking to defend the Ashes which they regained on home soil in 2015.

    The series begins in Brisbane on 23 November.

    Leeds Rhinos have signed prop Nathaniel Peteru from Australian National Rugby League side Gold Coast Titans on a three-year contract.

    New Zealand-born Peteru, 25, has also played for New Zealand Warriors in the NRL and joins the Rhinos ahead for the 2018 season.

    "I know they have a winning culture and that is something I want to be part of," Peteru told the club website., external

    Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington says Peteru is an "outstanding signing" who he expects to make a significant impact at the club.

  13. Report into fatal Sheffield tram accident recommends driver trainingpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    A investigation report, external into the death of an 81-year-old man at a tram stop in Sheffield has recommended drivers receive more training on safety procedures at request stops.

    The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau (RAIB) was called in after the accident at Woodbourn Road on 22 December 2016.

    The man had just got off a tram travelling into the city centre and was using the tram stop crossing when he was hit by an outbound service.

    The RAIB said the pedestrian didn't see or hear the tram coming and the driver did not see the man approaching the crossing.

    The RAIB found inconsistencies in Supertram's procedures for how drivers should treat request stops, where the tram is not automatically required to come to a halt.

    It's also recommended setting up an industry working group to monitor the development and application of new pedestrian detection technology to alert drivers to potential collisions with pedestrians.

    Two men have been arrested in West Yorkshire for being members of a right wing group.

    In total counter terrorism officers have arrested 11 people across the country after an investigation into the banned group National Action.

    A 23-year-old man from Sowerby Bridge and a 26-year-old man from Leeds have both been arrested on suspicion of membership of a proscribed organisation.

    Their homes are being searched in connection with their arrests, earlier this month four serving members of the Army were arrested for allegedly being part of the same group.

    National Action became the first British neo-Nazi group to be banned last December after Home Secretary Amber Rudd said it was promoting violence and acts of terrorism.

  15. Protesters locked in to metal tubing on Kirby Misperton roadpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Protesters are back at the Kirby Misperton fracking site today where they've locked themselves into metal tubing concrete barrels in front of the site.

    These picture were posted on a facebook page called the Kirby Misperton Protection Camp at about 07:00 this morning.

    Protesters locked themselves in to barrels on Monday and had to be cut out by police using angle grinders.

    Police say officers with specialist training and equipment are currently at the scene to ensure the four people involved are safe and well.

    Supt Alisdair Dey, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “The actions of these people will cause significant disruption to local businesses."

    Third Energy was granted planning permission to frack in May 2016, but has not received final consent from the government to begin work.

    Police have confirmed a 44-year-old man was killed in a crash on the A1M in North Yorkshire last week.

    Andrew Keir, from Middlesbrough, died when his van hit a lorry in the early hours of Friday morning on the northbound carriageway, between J48 at Boroughbridge and J49 for Dishforth.

    Tim was the star guest at a question and answer event hosted by BBC Radio York's Jonathan Cowap.

    Anthony Knopwood, who is 28, was last seen on Saturday night at his house and was thought to be travelling to Bradford city centre for a night out.

    His family are concerned for him as his disappearance is out of character.

    He has the word ‘Ants’ tattooed on his right arm and was last seen wearing blue jeans, black trainers and a beige hooded top with the words ‘Gym King’ on it.

    Good news for those that love cats but don't have one: A date has been set for the opening of Leeds' first cat cafe.

    The Kitty Cafe will be opening up on 11 December at the old Yorkshire Bank building on Kirkgate in the city centre, just behind Debenhams.

    The cats will all be rehoused from local rescue homes, and there is the chance to re-home one yourself if you really fall in love with one.
