  4. Woman, 80, left 'extremely shaken' after discovering house burglarpublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 12 October 2017

An 81-year-old woman has been left "extremely shaken" after discovering a man stealing cash and jewellery from her home.

The elderly woman was sitting in the living room of her flat in Woodhouse, when she heard a noise coming from the bedroom.

When she went to investigate she was confronted by a man who then forced the door shut and escaped through a window.

He was wearing a green tracksuit and left the area between Skelton Lane and Water Slacks Drive.

The incident happened about 17:00 on Monday, 9 October, anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire Police.

  5. Clifford's Tower visitor centre opponents win right to legal appealpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 12 October 2017

Campaigners trying to stop a visitor centre being built at the foot of Clifford's Tower in York have won the latest round in their fight.

They've been granted permission for a hearing at the Court Of Appeal.

The City of York Council approved English Heritage's £2m plans for a visitor centre below the 13th Century tower last October.

Campaigners had previously likened the proposed building to a "toilet block".

Independent councillor, Johnny Hayes, raised money thorough crowdfunding for a judicial review, but the judge ruled in favour of English Heritage.

Councillor Hayes found out yesterday that he's been given permission to appeal against that ruling.

Clifford's Tower is the last remaining part of York Castle.

In 1190 it was the site of one of the most notorious incidents in English history, when about 150 Jews were massacred after taking refuge there.

Five other people were arrested at the site yesterday.

A 38-year-old woman and a 49-year old man were arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer, in two separate incidents.

Two women were arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway and another woman was arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway and a police officer.

The company Third Energy plans to start the process of fracking there before the end of the year.

  7. Listen: Huddersfield 'needs up-market boost for night economy'published at 07:23 British Summer Time 12 October 2017

Huddersfield needs to have a more up-market night-time culture to help it back to a thriving economy.

That's one of the main recommendations in a report to officials in Kirklees who looked at the ideas last night.

Simon Frewin has a restaurant on Queensgate. He's pleased with the plan:

  8. Listen: Campaign stepped up for Britons jailed in Indiapublished at 07:13 British Summer Time 12 October 2017

Relatives of six former British soldiers imprisoned in India, including two from Yorkshire, are marking the fourth anniversary of their arrest by stepping up the campaign to free them.

Paul Towers from Pocklington near York and Nicholas Simpson who's from Catterick, north Yorkshire, are among those being held.

Their lawyer Stephen Askins says the families are desperate for more to be done:

They were jailed for five years after Indian authorities ruled the American anti-piracy ship they were working on wasn't properly authorised. The men have continued to protest their innocence.

Their families will today hand in a petition to Downing Street with more than four 400,000 signatures.

  9. Sex offenders put in HMP Doncaster to 'cut violence'published at 07:05 British Summer Time 12 October 2017

Hundreds of alleged or convicted sex offenders have been placed in a prison to tackle high levels of violence, a report has found.

The HM Inspectorate of Prisons report found levels of violence at the jail had reduced sharply but still remained high.

Inspectors said the "deliberate policy" was aimed at "stabilising" the population at privately-run HMP Doncaster.

This had been done without adequate measures to support the men and the risk they pose, the report said.

Serco said staff had worked hard to address complex challenges.

The Prison Officers' Association said increasing the number of sex offenders in jails could help reduce violence because they largely had a less volatile temperament towards staff and other inmates compared to prisoners with non-sexual offences.
