  4. BBC Weather Watchers: Strange sun seen across Yorkshirepublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 16 October 2017

    BBC Weather Watchers

We've been sent in a few pictures of the sun looking very menacing today, including this from Wakefield:

    Sun

BBC weather presenter Simon King said it's due to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia dragging in tropical air and dust from the Sahara.

The strange sun has been spotted mostly in South and West Yorkshire, as well as other areas around the UK.

The below was snapped in Sheffield this lunchtime:

    Sun

Simon King adds that debris from forest fires in Portugal and Spain is also playing a part.

The dust has caused light to be refracted and reflected in longer wavelengths, making it appear red, he says.

Just like it does, in fact, in this very spooky shot from Emley:

    Sun

Simon King says: "Ophelia originated in the Azores where it was a hurricane and as it tracked its way northwards it dragged in tropical air from the Sahara."

This means dust from the Sahara has been brought with it, he adds.

Campaigners claim many of the trees classed as “damaging” or “discriminatory” are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.

Jonny's father, David, had a 20-year career with Yorkshire and played four Tests for England. In 1998, he took his own life.

To mark the release of his autobiography, A Clear Blue Sky, Bairstow spoke to former England captain Michael Vaughan for a BBC Radio 5 live special to be broadcast on Thursday 19 October.
