  2. New £250,000 mountain bike trail for Yorkshire Dalespublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    A new mountain bike trail is being created in the Yorkshire Dales.

    The Swale Trail which will run from Reeth to Keld is aimed at young mountain bikers and families who want to ride together.

    Richmondshire District Council say it'll will be promoted to people with mobility difficulties and families with buggies – and as a "multi-user trail" it will also be used by walkers and horse riders.

    It's costing nearly a quarter of a million pounds and should be finished next Easter.

    Councillor Yvonne Peacock, pictured with park ranger, Michael Briggs, said: "This will be a great asset to the district and opening in the year we host the Tour de Yorkshire makes it all the more special.”

    A man who assaulted a referee during a football match has been jailed for 18 months.

    Scott Prew, 23, of High Garth, Eastfield, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at York Crown Court earlier.

    He ran onto the pitch during a game between Goalsports and Eastway Sports at Pickering Town's Mill Lane ground on 29 March.

    Referee, Bill Pashby, received hospital treatment for a shoulder injury.

    The game, the final of the Scarborough Saturday League Trophy, had to be abandoned following the incident.

    Mr Pashby said: "I got struck from behind and felt tremendous pain."

    Four three to four week old kittens have been rescued after they were abandoned in a shoe box near Woolley Edge services on the M1.

    Costa, Starbucks, Nero and Java (see the theme there) were found at 02:45 this morning by police who called Bradford Cat Rescue.

    The charity said in a post on Facebook "The kittens are not in good condition, their eyes are sore, they are still hypothermic and are taking very little milk."

    They have now had their eyes bathed, been treated for fleas, had emergency treatment overnight and are being cared for around the clock.

    A motorcyclist has died after his bike hit a skip in Bradford last night.

    The rider, a 22-year-old man, was on Moorside Road heading towards Harrogate Road when his 125cc Aprilla hit the skip at about 23:45.

    Paramedics arrived on the scene, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

    Police are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone who saw what happened to call 101.

    Residents living on a former Coal Board housing estate near Leeds have said they are in limbo as they wait to find out if their homes will be demolished.

    Investment company Pemberstone is looking to build 72 new homes on Sugar Hill Lane and Wordsworth Drive in Oulton, Rothwell.

    A total of 70 homes homes were initially only to be used as short-term housing, but have now stood for more than half a century.

    Tenants are worried they will be priced out of the area if the plan goes ahead.

    New powers to clamp down on anti-social behaviour in Doncaster town centre have been agreed.

    In August, the council asked people to comment on 10 proposed prohibitions which included no begging for money, no camping and no consuming alcohol in any public place other than at licensed premises.

    About seven out of 10 of those who responded supported the introduction of tough new measures, the authority says.

    It's envisaged Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO) for the town centre will come into force at the beginning of November.

    It will work alongside other measures to help those who find themselves homeless or rough sleeping, the council adds.

  8. York historians examine motivations behind gunpowder, treason and plotpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    University of York researchers have helped film makers to decide on the motivations of the men behind the infamous Gunpowder Plot which is now marked every year on 5 November.

    Dr Hannah Greig and Dr John Cooper, from the university, are the historical advisors behind the BBC’s new retelling of the infamous plot to blow up the House of Lords.

    Gunpowder, starring Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington (pictured above) and Lord of the Rings actress Liv Tyler, tells the story of the chain of events which led up to the attempted assassination of King James I.

    Dr Greig says: "We are very familiar in modern-day culture with the name Guy Fawkes, particularly here in York where he was born, but perhaps less familiar with the lives and motivations of his fellow plotters."

    The first part of the series, which was filmed in several locations around Yorkshire, including in Leeds and Bradford, will be screened on BBC One at 21:10 on Saturday 21 October.

    A 14-year-old girl is due in court after it's alleged she spat in the face of a police officer.

    Police say they were called to Scarborough railway station at about 17:00 yesterday because of reports of anti-social behaviour.

    The girl was arrested and later charged with assaulting a police constable and using threatening or abusive words or behaviour to cause harassment.

    She is due to appear at Scarborough Youth Magistrates’ Court on 7 November.

  10. Leeds 'demob' suit goes on display in New Yorkpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    A "demob" suit which was made for a Leeds soldier after World War Two has become an exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

    Demob suits were civilian clothes given to a man on his demobilisation from the British armed forces at the end of the Second World War.

    The suit now on display in New York was made by famous Leeds tailors Burtons in 1945 and has been sent 5,000 miles across the pond from its usual home at the Leeds Industrial Museum in Armley.

    Other fashion exhibits on display in New York include a pair of Levi jeans from 1947, a Vivienne Westwood kilt and a wonderbra from the 1990s.

    South Yorkshire Police are appealing for help to find a 32-year-old man who's been missing since yesterday morning.

    Paul Sargant was last seen in the Melrose Road area of Burngreave at about 08.30 on Monday.

    He has not been seen or heard from since and police and his family are becoming increasingly concerned for his welfare, external.

    Mr Sargant is about 6ft tall, of slim build with short, light brown hair and facial stubble or a short beard.

    Police believe he could be wearing a white or grey hooded jacket and grey and silver Adidas LA trainers.

    Leeds Rhinos back-rower Stevie Ward has told BBC Look North the team's Grand Final win against Castleford will help him cope with the disappointment of not being involved in the World Cup with England because of injury.

    The 23-year-old missed the 2015 Grand Final triumph against Wigan with a serious knee injury but he played through the pain barrier to pick up a coveted winner's ring.

    Unfortunately, the need for rehabilitation meant Ward would not be able to take his place in England's squad for the World Cup, which starts on 27 October.

    A budget of almost £4m has been agreed so work can begin on demolishing the Futurist Theatre in Scarborough.

    Leading borough councillors met this morning to approve the cash.

    The next big step comes on Friday when planners will meet to consider the application to knock down the venue.

    It follows a big campaign to try and save the building which closed in 2014 after being classed as unsustainable as a theatre.

    Acts to have appeared at the 2,000-seat venue over the years included The Beatles, Shirley Bassey and Ken Dodd.

    A 20 mph speed limit is set to be introduced in Sheffield city centre following a public consultation.

    The limit is expected to be rolled out before the end of the year on more than 300 roads in the middle of the city.

    It will encompass nearly every street apart from a few major thoroughfares such as Arundel Gate, Derek Dooley Way and Sheaf Street.

    Sheffield City Council says it hopes that reducing the speed of traffic will cut the number of accidents and encourage people to take up more sustainable modes of travel such as cycling.

    A man has died after his car hit a lamppost in a village near Huddersfield yesterday teatime.

    The 55-year-old was driving in a black VW CC on Huddersfield Road in Shelley towards Skelmanthorpe when he crashed at about 18:40 at the junction of Westerley Way.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police say that they don't think any other cars were involved in the crash and that they are appealing for any witnesses who saw the VW before the crash to come forward.

    A Scarborough man's creative endeavours a few weeks ago appear to have pre-empted yesterday's ghostly red sun.

    John Bromley, 81, says he had a kind of epiphany two weeks ago, brought on by a feeling of the "need for more structure and stability in an unsettled world."

    Encouraged by his daughter, John decided to try to capture his feeling on canvas.

    When his daughter phoned him yesterday to say the sky had gone red, John says he had to "sit down and have a glass of wine."

    According to the Met Office, the red sun is caused by winds pulling up Saharan dust.

    This dust is then reflected and refracted in longer wavelengths, giving a red appearance to the sky.

    Meanwhile in Hipperholme, there's still one line closed, causing disruption.

    Network Rail said "Shortly after 11pm on Monday, a train driver reported that they had struck a tree on the line between Halifax and Bradford."

    They added: "Both railway lines were initially blocked. Network Rail workers are currently on site and are working to remove the tree. One line has now re-opened to trains."

  18. A return to grandeur: End in sight for York's Mansion House restorationpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Moving trucks have arrived, large mahogany tables and priceless silver are being steadily hoisted in and dusted off - all signs that York's Mansion House is finally about to come back to life.

    After almost two years, the restoration of the historic building in the centre of York is coming to an end, with its facade and freshly gilded crest now teasingly revealed as each piece of scaffolding is removed.

    The Mansion House is the official home of the city's Lord Mayor and was built in 1732.

    The work included the restoration of the building's original kitchens and improved access to the city's collection of gold and silverware.

    It was made possible through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, funding from City of York Council and a variety of grants and donations totalling £2.6m.

    The building was expected to re-open to the public at the start of the year, but it will now finally open in the first week of December.

    The mother of an 11-year-old West Yorkshire boy killed by a tractor driver who was twice over the drink-drive limit is due to meet a government minister as part of her campaign for a change in the law.

    Harry Whitlam, from Leeds, was knocked down and killed on a farm in 2013, but tractor driver Gary Green could only be prosecuted over health and safety.

    Green, 51, was jailed for 16 months and two weeks at Leeds Crown Court after admitting failing to ensure the safety of others.

    Four fire crews have tackled a blaze on an industrial estate in Rotherham.

    Crews from Rotherham, Dearne, Elm Lane and Maltby were called at about 22:45 last night to the fire at the Northfield Industrial Estate on North Drive in Northfield.

    When crews arrived at the scene an industrial machine was well alight and had spread to a skip and recycling material.

    Firefighters finally left the scene at about 00:50 this morning.

    It's thought the blaze is believed to have started accidentally.
