  5. Listen: 'We have not abandoned electrification' - Transport Secretarypublished at 09:04 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

    Katie Galbraith
    Local Live, BBC Sheffield

The Transport Secretary says he has not abandoned the planned electrification along the Midland Mainline.

The government faced a backlash over the summer after it announced it would not be fully electrifying the line between London and Sheffield, opting instead for bi-mode trains using diesel engines.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has told MPs the first phase of electrification will eventually shave 20 minutes off the journey time to Sheffield, while the second abandoned phase would only have reduced travelling time by one minute:

  6. Yorkshire's buildings make 'spookiest' listpublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 17 October 2017

With Halloween almost upon us, it's no surprise to hear there's a poll out today listing the country's spookiest places - and two of them are in North Yorkshire.

    Spook

Clifford's Tower in York (left) and Whitby Abbey are included in the top 10 spookiest English Heritage sites according to a poll released today.

In 1190, Clifford's Tower was the site of one of the most notorious incidents in English history, when about 150 Jews were massacred after taking refuge there.

Meanwhile, Whitby Abbey helped inspire Bram Stoker's legendary novel Dracula.

Lucy Hutchings, regional director at English Heritage, says: "Our sites are soaked in history and from bloody battles to dark deeds, not all of their stories are sweetness and light."

The top 10 spookiest sites, as chosen by English Heritage staff, are:

    1. Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire
    2. Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire
    3. Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight
    4. Pendennis Castle, Cornwall
    5. Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire
    6. Beeston Castle and Woodland Park, Cheshire
    7. Dover Castle, Kent
    8. Framlingham Castle, Suffolk
    9. Clifford's Tower, North Yorkshire
    10. Down House, home of Charles Darwin, Kent.
