    Labour says it is investigating allegations about the "comments and behaviour" of its MP Jared O'Mara.

    Mr O'Mara has already apologised for homophobic and misogynistic remarks he made online in 2002 and 2004 and quit the Commons equalities committee.

    But he denies subsequent allegations of offensive language to a constituent in March this year.

    Labour said it was investigating the more recent claims, which were made on BBC Two's Daily Politics.

    A prisoner who admitted having an improvised weapon will have to serve nine more months in jail, a court has said.

    Anton Cobham, of HMP Doncaster, was due to be released from prison today but he admitting owning the weapon at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court this morning and was told he will have to spend more time in prison.

    Det Con Emma Taylorson from South Yorkshire Police’s Prison Investigation Team said: “Cobham was serving an 18-month sentence for robbery and had been due to be released from prison today, but this result means he will spend a further period of time behind bars."

    Labour has launched an investigation into Sheffield MP Jared O'Mara's comments and behaviour following claims he insulted a constituent just months before his election.

    Mr O'Mara "categorically denies" the claim made by his Sheffield Hallam constituent Sophie Evans about an incident in March this year.

    Yesterday the MP resigned from his position on the Commons Women and Equalities Committee in a row over homophobic and sexist comments he posted online more than 10 years ago.

    Labour said the investigation into Mr O'Mara related to the allegations from this year.

    A former employee of rent-to-own retailer BrightHouse from York has spoken out about the company's high-pressure sales techniques.

    The firm has been told to pay £14.8m to 249,000 customers by the financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

    Louise Grant, from York, worked for BrightHouse from 2012 to 2016 as a branch manager in Yorkshire and London but left because of "unacceptable" high-pressure sales techniques.

    "In the early days, we did not ask people about their expenditure at all. We just checked what their income was. They changed that policy because the FCA came to investigate, asking for more stringent checks."

    A memorial event is taking place in Leeds tonight for a rough sleeper who died on Friday - he regularly slept at one of the city's landmarks.

    The man, known as Alan, is thought to have died from injuries he suffered in a fight.

    He was a well-known sight in the city, having what looked like a permanent bed set up near the Dark Arches.

    Flowers and tributes have been left at the site where he used to sleep and there will be a vigil there tonight at 20:00.

    He was described as a "great guy" by one man who knew him.

    JJ who was sitting with the tributes to Alan at the Dark Arches this afternoon said that "people came by him and spoke to him as he sat on his makeshift bed and read his book."

    The occupants of a vehicle were trapped inside for two hours during a violent stand off at a North Yorkshire beauty spot.

    The incident on 7 October at the Scarhouse Reservoir dam in Nidderdale between 16:45 and 19:00.

    As the red Discovery went to cross the dam, it was blocked by a quad bike which was parked across the road - a large rock was thrown through the window and a woman tried to get into the vehicle.

    There were also threats to push the vehicle into the reservoir - police say the only witnesses may be two bikers who were also prevented from crossing the dam.

    The bikers eventually left the area but police want to speak to them as witnesses about the incidents.

  13. Council stumps up cash to revive bus service between York and Selbypublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 24 October 2017

    New bus services are to run between Selby and York from Monday after North Yorkshire County Council stepped in with financial support.

    Villagers lost their services when Utopia Coaches shut down last August.

    The company, based at Sherburn in Elmet, provided services to rural communities between Selby, Drax, Tadcaster and York.

    From Monday additional services, funded by the authority, will run between York and Selby and between Sherburn and Pontefract.

    In South Yorkshire we often talk about Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill and cricketer Joe Root but soon we could be talking about two jet skiers from Doncaster.

    That's because Harry Rikaby and his brother Brad have been working towards the title of professional jet ski racers and between them they have won national and international titles.

    Harry, 21, has won his second British title after racing to victory in the IJSBA Rec Lites section of the British Championships.

    His progress makes him a step closer to following his brother Brad, who has been professionally jet ski racing for Budapest-based Kasza Racing since last year after winning several national and international titles.

    Workers at Northern rail are set to strike again over the role of guards and driver-only operated trains.

    Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) workers have planned the strike for 24 hours on 8 November, along with members on Southern Western Railway, Greater Anglia and Merseyrail.

    Students in Sheffield are being advised not to wedge open doors in their accommodation spaces.

    New students in the city are often tempted to use the door props to create a more open living space but are putting their lives in danger in the event of a fire.

    Pictures showing the aftermath of a fire incident in Rotherham have been posted online by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

    Crews were called to the scene at 13:15 BST on Sunday and found a garden shed well alight. The fire had also spread to part of the house

  20. 'Automatic weapon' fired at house and cars in Bradfordpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 24 October 2017

    Police have revealed that an automatic weapon was fired in Bradford on Friday - officers say 20 bullets were fired at vehicles and a house.

    West Yorkshire Police are now trying to find the weapon "so it can be removed from the streets" but say that guns like this are "rare in the UK".

    A 26-year-old man from Bradford has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to that incident.
