    A holiday in the country became work for three Yorkshire RSPCA officers after they found a bird trapped in a drainpipe.

    The trio discovered the trapped wren at their holiday cottage near Brampton, Cumbria.

    They were alerted by the "scuffling" sound of the wren as they headed out on a walk.

    The RSPCA said the officers were "huge animal lovers" who "could never turn their backs on an animal in need".

    "[The bird] was obviously very frightened and distressed as he kept trying to jump back up the pipe but Lucy managed to get hold of him so we could manoeuvre him and get him out," she said.

    "He was a bit dazed and battered but, thankfully, didn't appear to have any serious injuries.

    A professor from Sheffield has been named in a list of the top ten most influential black people in Britain.

    Professor Laura Serrant - Professor of Nursing at Sheffield Hallam University - has been named eighth in the list topped by businesswoman Gina Miller.

    Nearly half of those on the 2018 Powerlist of 100 people, which recognises those of African and African Caribbean heritage, are women.

    Professor Serrant is regarded as a voice representing nurses and minority communities and has been recognised with numerous awards and prizes, including Queens Nurse status .

    North Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner says the force is doing all it can to make sure people who commit crimes, when abusing others online, are successfully prosecuted.

    More than 100 cases of online trolling, cyber-bullying and harassment have been recorded by police in the county this year.

    Across England and Wales the figures reveal more than 200 incidents of malicious communications were recorded every day in 2016.

    Mick Leech is officially in the Top Gun of bus drivers in England after he proved his worth as creme-de-la-creme against 98 other drivers from across the country.

    During the competition, the 39-year-old from Halifax was tested on practical driving skills, customer care and a theory test.

    A member of Sheffield Women's Equality party says Sheffield Hallam Labour MP Jared O'Mara needs to "show us that he has changed".

    Party member Charlotte Mead made the comments following an apology issued by Mr O'Mara after sexist and homophobic comments he made when he was younger were recently published.

    He made comments about celebrities including the band Girls Aloud, and the jazz singer Jamie Cullum.

    Mr O'Mara said he used to be sexist and homophobic when he wrote the comments at 21-years-old, but his views have since changed.

    An armed robber threatened a 75-year-old woman with a knife in broad daylight.

    The woman was attacked on Dyche Road in the Jordanthorpe area of Sheffield ion Sunday morning.

    She was asked to hand over her bus money but when she refused she was attacked and threatened with the knife before the man stole her purse containing just £10.

    The thief is white, in his early 20s, about 5ft 6ins tall, of a skinny build and spoke with a local accent.

    He was wearing a grey hooded top and grey tracksuit bottoms and carrying a black Sports Direct bag at the time of the robbery on Sunday 22 October at about 09:00.

    Police in Bristol have defended their decision to give a "taxi ride" to a group of Leeds United fans who were at an away game in the city.

    The officers had given the fans a lift from one pub to another because they said they are "always cautious about allowing away fans to drink in public houses which are used mainly by home fans."

    Avon and Somerset Police added that the policy is: "rigorously enforced to prevent potential disorder. In this case we moved several Leeds fans from directly outside a public house used by Bristol City fans."

    Police are appealing for information to trace the driver of a car that failed to stop at the scene of a crash near Boroughbridge.

    It happened yesterday morning at the junction of the B6265 (Green Hammerton to Boroughbridge Road) and Gallabar Lane, which leads to Marton cum Grafton.

    A motorcyclist was left with serious leg and arm injuries after trying to avoid the car.

    The 52-year-old local man, who was riding a Triumph motorcycle, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.

    Officers are appealing to the driver of the car and to anyone else who was in the area at the time, who witnessed the collision or saw a vehicle leave the scene of the incident, to come forward.

    A teenage boy has been assaulted in an attempted robbery in Huddersfield.

    The 14-year-old was walking on Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon with a friend when they were approached by two older teenagers - around 16 or 17-years-old.

    One of the older teens threatened him and asked for money, but when he refused he was punched in the face leaving him with a cut.

    The older teenagers then ran off empty handed.

    The arrival of three penguin chicks at Scarborough's Sea Life Centre has been a tonic for staff there - you could say they've been picked up by a penguin!

    The Humboldt penguin is a South Amercian species which is classed as "vulnerable to extinction" according to staff.

    The number of crimes in Yorkshire involving online bullying and harassment has almost trebled in the space of a year.

    A Leeds teenager claims internet trolls "ruined her life" by superimposing her face on pornographic messages which were shared on social media.

    Victoria, 18 from Leeds, was told to "go kill yourself" on the Live.me streaming app and her home address was shared on Twitter as a "house to burgle".

    She said she was sent pornographic images that featured her face and had photographs of her house shared online, while another message to her simply said "die".

    Events have had to be cancelled at a flagship music and arts venue in Wakefield, as the company behind Unity Works has gone into administration.

    Trading will continue in a limited capacity, but live events and conferences due to be held at the venue have been shelved.

    The Grade-II listed Unity Hall, on Westgate reopened to the public following a £4m restoration project in 2014.

    Unity Hall was established as the Wakefield Co-operative headquarters in 1867.
