  1. Watch: Bloodhound test - numbers behind speed record attemptpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    The team behind the Bloodhound land speed record attempt will take the rocket car for a spin at Newquay Airport today - many of the components have been tested in Rotherham.

    The trial run of up to 200mph (320km/h) will give people an idea of what the vehicle is capable of, so far many of its parts have been tested at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

    The real test will be in South Africa in 2019 when the team aims to reach 1,000mph (1,610km/h).

    A 12-year-old girl has gone missing in Leeds, police say they are "very concerned for her welfare".

    Ella Parnell was last seen near her home in Beeston at about 12:00 yesterday.

    She was wearing a navy blue and white tracksuit and peach and white Adidas trainers.

    Det Insp James Entwistle from West Yorkshire Police said: “Ella is only 12 and we are obviously very concerned for her welfare given her young age."

    A 75-year-old man from Harrogate has been speaking about being lonely to try to help other people like him.

    Alan Croft has lived on his own since 2013 when his wife, Ann, died.

    He's joined groups, started painting with friends, and moved closer to Ann's sister in Harrogate.

    But Alan says that loneliness never really goes away.

  4. Gypsy/Roma pupils 'five times more likely to be excluded'published at 09:46 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    School children from the Gypsy/Roma community in Rotherham and Sheffield are five times more likely to be excluded than other pupils.

    Five hundred Gypsy/Roma exclusions were made during 2015/16 - with some pupils being excluded more than once during that time.

    Other cities with substantial numbers of Roma students - like Bradford and Newcastle - show very low rates of exclusion.

    The Roma Support Group, which published the figures, says this level of school exclusions should be the subject of discrete investigations, at both central government and in local cities and schools - with authorities working alongside Roma communities and advocates to identify if this is happening

    A number of people are due to appear in court today charged with offences connected to protest activity at Kirby Misperton.

    They are charged with offences including willfully obstructing a highway, obstructing an officer, assaulting an officer, or Trade Union Act offences.

    It's been suggested that rugby players are more at risk of concussion if they wear protective headgear.

    Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University say it's because it may give players a sense of false security resulting in them being more reckless when they go in for a tackle.

    York is well known as a 'ghost town', but there was a little bit more abnormal activity than usual overnight.

    Luckily, these ghosts aren't the kind to jump out and scream 'boo'.

    Twenty-six ghost lamps and hundreds of miniature ghosts have been hidden around the city for the public to find.

    Each lamp is named from A-Z and has been personalised by a different local artist or designer.

    The Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Angela Smith, says the party has done the right thing in suspending Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O'Mara.

    She also said: "Sheffield is much better than this and it does not reflect on the city of Sheffield at all - but there’s a danger it will do unless we deal with it.”

    Mr O'Mara was suspended from the Labour Party yesterday after sexist and homophobic comments he posted online more than a decade ago were uncovered.

  10. Wakefield railway bridge among worst for being hit by lorriespublished at 08:10 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    A railway bridge in Wakefield is one of the most frequently hit by lorries in the country.

    The Denby Dale Road bridge on the A636 has been hit by vehicles 24 times in the last five years.

    New figures released by Network Rail show almost 2,000 bridge strikes happen every year.

    They've launched a new campaign, external aimed at HGV drivers and haulage companies to try to reduce the problem.

    A building thought to be the oldest surviving timber-framed building in York has been placed on Historic England's "at risk" list.

    Lady Row on Goodramgate dates from the early 14th century and repair works are urgently needed.

    The 18th century Tuscan Temple at Duncombe Park near Helmsley has been removed from the list after significant repair work, Historic England said.

    The LBGT Community in Hallam and Sheffield has called on Labour MP Jared O'Mara to resign from his position.

    The Labour MP has been suspended while he's investigated for misogynistic and homophobic comments he is alleged to have made.

    Mr O'Mara has apologised for online remarks from 2002 and 2004 but denies some more recent claims.

    At a meeting trustees of LGBT Sheffield said that the MP for Hallam is unfit to serve them.

  13. Call for tighter laws on firework salespublished at 07:27 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    A former West Yorkshire MP is calling for stricter laws on firework sales.

    Gerry Sutcliffe, who used to represent Bradford South, believes people should only be able to buy them at any time of the year if they have had training:

    Last year West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service recorded 95 attacks against firefighters across the year.

    They say there have already been a handful attacks this year including one where a firefighter was hit in the stomach with a firework.

    A potential new development in going before planning board at Rotherham Council today.

    The 12 acre site at Waverley is expected to cost £50m if it goes ahead.

    As well as offices it could also be home to a health centre, a gym, a bus station and a number of retail units.

    But there have been objections about the transport plans and that some of the buildings have a monotonous appearance.

  16. Kirkgate Market in Leeds to open tonightpublished at 07:03 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    Leeds' historic Kirkgate Market opens its doors at night for the first time later.

    Tonight the new events space will be open until 23:00 with 20 pop-up stalls, including take away food, bars and a DJ.

    Leeds City Council says the idea is to get people who visit the city centre during the evening interested in the market, and that so far they have four of the events planned.

    If you're a cyclist, there'll be a special bike park set up where they'll do a bit of free maintenance on you bike when you leave it there.

  17. North Yorkshire fracking could start from todaypublished at 06:46 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    The company behind the Kirby Misperton fracking site says it could start operating anytime from today.

    It's more than six weeks since protests began at the fracking site at Kirby Misperton and police say they have made about 55 arrests - some of these people are appearing at York Magistrates Court this morning.

    Third Energy is now nearing the time when it can begin fracking but it's still still waiting for the Government to sign off on its hydraulic fracturing plan.

    The company has sent out a letter which says that it could start doing so anytime from today.
