    Gwen Taylor has paid tribute to her former Duty Free on-screen husband, Keith Barron, following his death aged 83.

    The actor and comic - who also starred in Dennis Potter's The Nigel Barton Plays and 1975 Hollywood film The Land That Time Forgot - died after a short illness, says his agent.

    it was the 80s sitcom Duty Free where he garnered his reputation as a much-loved star.

    Set in Spain, the ITV show ran for three series from 1984 until 1986 with Barron starring as gruff northerner David Pearce alongside Gwen Taylor as his wife Amy.

    'Reduce the Strength’ is a new initiative being launched by Doncaster Council during alcohol awareness week which is running from 13 – 19 November.

    It has the aim of stopping cheap, strong drink above 6.5% alcohol by volume being sold in the town centre.

    It's planned to extend the area covered because the council says more than 350 Doncaster residents have died from alcoholic liver disease between 2010 and 2015.

    It's a voluntary scheme for town centre shop owners to take part in, agreeing not to sell beer, lager and cider above 6.5% .

    Exceptions are made for premium products such as craft beers and lagers which have become more popular in recent years.

    Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to after a man was racially abused and punched at a West Yorkshire railway station.

    A man in his 20s was standing on the platform of Wakefield Westgate station listening to music when another man shouted something at him.

    He removed his headphones to see what he was saying, at that point the man racially abused him and punched him.

    A 24-year-old Scarborough man has been interviewed under caution, following damage caused to the road surface of Royal Albert Drive, during a car cruise event last month.

    A driver caused thousands of pounds worth of damage by performing wheel spins

    North Yorkshire County Council had recently resurfaced Royal Albert Drive in Scarborough as part of £600,000 of improvements to the area.

    David Bowe, from the council, said they would pursue some of the £50,000 repair costs in a civil claim.

    Officers say they have now submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service for a prosecution decision in relation to the offences of dangerous driving and criminal damage over £5,000.

    Police investigating the incident have thanked members of the public who came forward with information during the investigation.

    So called "unauthorised visitors" have been banned from going to a tower block in Leeds in a bid to cut drug use and anti-social behaviour.

    Police say that the lives of people who live at Meynell Heights in Holbeck have been blighted by drug use - with some seeing drug users injecting in the hallways and leaving their needles on stairwells and in bin chutes.

    About three-quarters of the residents said they had experienced problems and were keen for action to tackle it. Police officers will now patrol the block to enforce the new rules.

    The new order means that anyone who is not a resident or invited guest is banned from entering the block and can face arrest.

  7. Police charge fracking protester glued to gatepublished at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2017

    Police say a woman has been charged after trying to glue herself to a gate the site in North Yorkshire where fracking is due to take place.

    Officers removed the 39-year-old her from the gate at Kirby Misperton, before the glue set, and arrested her.

    Seventy people have now been arrested in connection with protests at the Ryedale site since September; 63 of them have been charged, cautioned or remain under investigation.

    Meanwhile a second fracking company has defended a private meeting it had with planners in North Yorkshire.

    Ineos met with the county council last January, the details of which anti-fracking campaigners say only came to light through a freedom of information request.

    The company says it was an introductory meeting with the county council, which would be expected of responsible developers and was to talk through survey work it proposed to do in North Yorkshire.

    The firm has the largest amount of land under licence in the county to explore for shale gas.

    Police say that it's been used in robberies where people have been assaulted in their own homes by masked men.

    The van was used in robberies in the Hemsworth and Upton areas, where a number of men wearing balaclavas went into houses and assaulted the men who lived there.

    Both victims needed hospital treatment after the assaults which happened in the early hours of 6 October.

    Police say they think the burglaries were linked and the van could hold the key to who was behind them.

    South Yorkshire-born Keith Barron has died.

    His agent says the 83 year-old died after a short illness.

    • Born in Mexborough, Keith Barron's career has seen him play serious and comic roles on television, and he did a Hollywood movie in 1975 called The Land That Time Forgot.
    • He began his acting career with Sheffield Repertory, moving into television and stage with Bristol Old Vic.
    • He's appeared in Doctor Who and at one point was the voice for tv adverts for Tetley Tea.
    • A sit-com, Duty Free, starred Keith Barron and Gwen Taylor and was about two British couples meeting during a holiday in Spain. It ran for three series and was made by Yorkshire Television.

    Almost £2m worth of funding has been approved to help crucial work needed on the North Yorkshire coast.

    North Yorkshire County Council says it hopes the cash will help the borough council maintain the cliffs in Scarborough and the pier in Whitby.

    A blue plaque will be installed later at the home of a Wakefield nurse who was killed during World War One.

    Nellie Spindler.was the only woman to be killed at the Battle of Passchendaele.

    She died aged 26 in a blast at a hospital three miles from the frontline near Ypres in 1917.

    Working for No 44 Casualty Clearing Station she helped treat seriously injured soldiers at a hospital based within range of German shells.

    Minnie Wood, a matron, held her as she died and wrote to Ms Spindler's parents telling them their daughter died "perfectly peacefully".

    Relatives and historians will gather to see the commemoration at her home in Stanley this afternoon.

    Son of South Yorkshire Keith Barron has died.

    Born in Mexborough, the 83 year-old has been a constant feature in dramas and comedy on TV for decades.

    A statement from his agent has confirmed the news, saying his death came after a short illness.

    He is survived by his wife Mary to whom he was married for 58 years and his son, Jamie, also an actor.

    An online campaign raising funds to "change the life" of a rough sleeper who was locked out of his usual spot has received hundreds of donations.

    Rob, a Polish man who is thought to have learning disabilities, has sheltered there for more than a year.

    Lara Seamer set up a JustGiving page, external on Saturday, after spiked chains were attached to two pillars on Fetter Lane, York, to block the gap between.

    She says: "I told him how much we had raised and there was a look of complete shock on his face, he actually cried."

    Sheffield Wednesday is to begin limiting the size of bags fans can take into the Hillsborough ground.

    The club says the move will enhance supporters safety and make it quicker to get into the stadium.

    From 1 December there'll be a ban on things like backpacks, briefcases, coolers and luggage of any kind.

    Computer and camera bags will be allowed in but only after a search.

    There's been a slight rise in unemployment in Yorkshire.

    Figures for July to September show an increase of 2,000 in the number of people out of work in our region.

    Nationally unemployment fell by 59,000 to 1.4 million - the lowest figure in more than 12 years.

    The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics also show that average earnings are still failing to keep pace with inflation but productivity has risen.

    Anti fracking campaigners in North Yorkshire say a private meeting between a fracking company and the county council is a wake-up call for other parts of the county where it could take place.

    Its as drilling is due to begin at a site in Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

    Third Energy still requires final approval from government and protesters said they will continue to try to stop it.

    The campaigners say details of the meeting between Ineos and the county council came from a Freedom of Information request.

    They say it took place "behind closed doors" last January and discussed the development of new fracking sites in North Yorkshire.

    They're due to raise the issue at the council's Ryedale area committee later.

    But the council says these types of introductory meetings between a potential developer and its planners are common and no decisions were made.

  18. 'Narcissistic' Judge convicted of serious fraudpublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2017

    A judge described by police as "narcissistic" has been convicted of serious fraud after sending false letters to support his own planning applications.

    Keith Shaw, 37, of Sherburn-in-Elmet near Leeds, was convicted of several fraud offences between 2012 and 2015.

    Shaw, a qualified solicitor and deputy district judge, pleaded guilty before Westminster Magistrates on Monday and was given a 20 week suspended sentence.

    The court heard he had tried to influence council planners by submitting several fictitious letters in support of his own applications for land around Whitby, using names and addresses without people's permission.

    He was also found to have claimed a £2,700 refund for surveyor's fees for land in Sleights, claiming falsely that he was charged for a survey which did not go ahead.

    Shaw was sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £2,747 compensation plus £7,285 costs.

    He was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

    Small businesses in West Yorkshire are being given a boost as the government continues its roll-out of superfast broadband.

    Companies are being told they can apply for grants to help pay for its installation.

    Areas covered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority - Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and York - are taking part in a pilot project to extent broadband use across the UK.

    Now, suppliers are offering sums of between £500 and £3,000 towards a full fibre-optic gigabit connection.

    The minister in charge of the programme, Matt Hancock, says high speed broadband is essential if businesses are to "compete, grow and become more productive."
