  1. Fate of landmark Scarborough theatre still hangs in balancepublished at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2017

The fate of the Futurist Theatre in Scarborough is still undecided, just under a month after the town council's planning committee approved an application to knock down the former venue.

    Futurist

Government officials are still considering whether to allow the demolition of the historic seafront building to go ahead.

The theatre opened in 1921 and hosted an array of famous artists, including The Beatles, before closing in 2014.

Campaigners had hoped to run it as a charitable trust but the council has judged it is not sustainable as a theatrical venue.

Work on its demolition is scheduled to start before the end of the year.

    Futurist

But after the vote campaigners fighting to save the building pinned their hopes on Communities Secretary Sajid Javid holding a public inquiry into the decision, which could delay demolition for up to a year.

His department says it's "received a number of requests to call in the planning application" and will decide on the next step "in due course".
