  14. Budget 2017: What it means for Yorkshirepublished at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2017

    Analysis

    James Vincent
    BBC Look North Political Editor

There’s just one mention of Yorkshire in Phillip Hammond’s red book, his official budget document. We were, perhaps, expecting more.

    Philip HammondImage source, Getty Images

The Treasury tells us there’s money for Leeds and Sheffield to become ‘Tech Hubs’ and cash for flood defences. But the most telling bit is what we won’t get.

These days most of the stuff coming out of the red briefcase on the day of the budget has already been mentioned in interviews or splashed as exclusives.

A couple of days ago the Chancellor said he was setting up a £1.7bn investment fund called Transforming Cities. So far so good.

But today he said that half of that money would be for places with a regional mayor. The problem is, we haven’t got one in Yorkshire.

Sheffield and Leeds will be able to bid for the some of the other half. But it’s hard not to see this is a swift kick in the behind for those in Yorkshire still trying to get one of the many devolution deals properly sorted.

  20. Divining rods: Your commentspublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2017

A majority of UK water companies - including Yorkshire Water - use divining rods to find underground pipes, even though there's no evidence to suggest they work.

You've been getting in touch with us with your thoughts:

It works. I have seen it and had a go myself. I too didn't believe it, but the plumbers have used them to locate (an) underground service runs in (my) rear gardens. I am baffled too. I can only think that the flowing water must create a magnetic field
