  7. Water firms use centuries-old technique - but what is it?published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2017

It's been revealed that a majority of UK water companies - including Yorkshire Water - use divining rods to find underground pipes - despite the fact there's no evidence to suggest the centuries-old method works.

    diviningImage source, Getty Images

    What is it?

The process of using divining rods is also known as dowsing and has been in use for hundreds of years.

It's the art of trying to find sources of water and other materials below the ground.

Practitioners use nothing but a twig or rod and there are still many people who claim to have had success with it - and even people who make careers out of it.

    Does it work?

Experiments to test its accuracy suggest it only seems to "work" when the dowser has some unconscious knowledge of where the source is.

Other experiments have suggested the movement of the rods is the result of muscle movements caused by subconscious mental activity - the same way in which people move a glass on a Ouija board.

Can I see it in action?

Yes. John Baker from Kent is one of those who makes a living out of divining for water:
