    The MP for Leeds West is calling for urgent action from the government and the European Union after Leeds and other UK cities were blocked from becoming European Capital of Culture for 2023.

    Rachel Reeves says it's a "huge injustice" in a letter she's sent to Culture Secretary Karen Bradley and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

    The Commission said last week that only countries in the EU, the European Economic Area, or in the process of becoming members could be eligible for the honour.

    Ms Reeves has pointed out that other non-EU cities such as Istanbul have previously been Capital of Culture.

    It's after a successful fundraising campaign by the Tadcaster Flood Action Group.

    Residents are now to be given training on how to use them to help anyone who has suffered a cardiac arrest.

    The billionaire owners of the Telegraph have been accused of "washing their hands", external of one of the UK’s most important and unusual industrial buildings after leaving it to rot for more than a decade and then putting it up for auction for £1.

    Temple Works is a Grade I-listed former flax mill in Leeds which boasts a 0.8 hectare (2 acre) factory floor which was once the largest room in the world.

    The building, once described by the Yorkshire Post, external as looking “like a stately home for a pharaoh”, has been owned since 2004 by the secretive Barclay family, who bought the Telegraph media group in 2004, external.

    The Barclays did not respond for comment via the Telegraph press office.

    Police are trawling through CCTV images to try and piece together the movements of a missing Sheffield woman.

    Angela Simmonite, 57, went missing on Saturday after leaving her home in the Ecclesfield area between 05:00 and 09:00.

    She's described as about 5ft 7ins tall, of a large build with honey blonde shoulder length hair, hazel eyes and teeth missing at the front.

    She was last seen wearing a black top with different pictures on it and black tracksuit type trousers.

    Police are also asking drivers with dashcams from the area to check if they have any footage showing her.

    People living near the site of a fatal car crash in Leeds say they've been left stunned after three children and two men died in the smash at the weekend.

    Brothers Ellis and Elliott Thornton, aged 12 and 15, died in the crash on Stonegate Road, Meanwood, along with 15-year-old Darnell Harte, 24-year-old Robbie Meerun and Anthoney Armour, 28.

    Two 15-year-olds remain in custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    England and Yorkshire wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow says his alleged headbutt on Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft has been "completely blown out of proportion".

    The incident, which took place on a night out in Perth in October, came to light during the hosts' 10-wicket win in the first Test in Brisbane.

    Bairstow and Bancroft said there was "no malice" in the action:

    England coach Trevor Bayliss said his players have "got to be smarter" away from the pitch.

    Bairstow will not be disciplined over the incident.

    South Yorkshire's rail network could see fewer train services but include more stops when the proposed HS2 rail line is built.

    Official documents which detail the phases, external the planned high speed route will be constructed reveal the number of regular trains between Sheffield and London would be halved to just one train per hour to make way for HS2 services.

    The document also shows that cross-country services would be affected as routes to the North East will stop at York and additional stops are added - two of which include Meadowhall and Chesterfield.

    Many intercity services in Yorkshire will be transferred to the Northern train route in an attempt to fill the loss of any services.

    HS2 developers say the project will improve journey times, boost capacity, and offer vastly improved connectivity.

    As investigations continue following the death of five people, including two young brothers, in a car crash in Leeds at the weekend, the handling of the incident by the emergency services has been praised.

    Brothers Ellis and Elliott Thornton, aged 12 and 15, died in the crash in a stolen car in Meanwood at about 22:00 on Saturday, along with 15-year-old Darnell Harte and 24-year-old Robbie Meerun.

    Father-of-two Anthoney Armour, 28, whose partner is pregnant with a third child, also died.

    Two 15-year-olds remain in custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Graham Brownlee, from Moortown Baptist Chruch, says local residents really appreciate the work of the emergency services in the aftermath of the crash.

    "Something like this must hit them as well and I know everyone's highly appreciative of the way they handled it at the scene and afterwards," says Mr Brownlee.

    "There'll be many professionals in the community, in schools and in other ways, who are doing tremendous work - particularly because they have to deal with the absolute shock."

    Police say they are concerned for the welfare of 16-year-old Dillon Billby who went missing over the weekend.

    The teenager was last seen at about 16:00 on Saturday 25 November on Ammersall Road in the Scawthorpe area of Doncaster.

    Dillon was last seen wearing a black tracksuit top with a grey T-shirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and khaki coloured trainers.

    He is about 5ft 9in tall with brown cropped hair, clean-shaven and of a slim build.

    A group of six British former soldiers, including three men from Yorkshire, who were jailed in India in 2013 have been acquitted of all charges.

    Paul Towers from Pocklington , Nicholas Simpson from Catterick and Ray Tindall originally from Hull are part of the so called 'Chennai six'.

    They were were found guilty of weapons offences while working as security guards on an anti-piracy ship.

    They always denied the charges.

    Lawyer Stephen Askins has been acting on behalf of the men.

    The Archbishop of York has put on a dog collar for the first time in almost 10 years, ending his symbolic protest over Robert Mugabe's leadership of Zimbabwe.

    In December 2007, Dr John Sentamu cut up his dog collar live on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, promising not to wear one until Mr Mugabe left office.

    He said Zimbabwe's leader had "taken people's identity" and "cut it to pieces", prompting him to do the same.

    On Sunday, he returned to the Marr Show and reinstated his collar as promised.

    Three men have been arrested after they were found near the perimeter fence of Third Energy's site at Kirby Misperton, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The incident happened last night when police received reports of people running through fields next to the site where fracking is due to start by the end of this year.

    The force says a number of holes had been cut in the fence.

    Three men, aged 27, 34 and 43, were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

    The 43-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of resisting a police officer and a public order offence.

    All three remain in custody at this time, say police.

    Two men aged 21 and 26 have been seriously injured after the car they were travelling in crashed into a garden wall in Rotherham.

    The crash happened at about 02:00 on Saturday when the driver of a silver Toyota Yaris lost control and collided with a pedestrian crossing before hitting a garden wall on Wickersley Road.

    Police said they were "unable to locate the driver" of the vehicle.

    Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to contact police.

    Six British former soldiers, including three men from Yorkshire, who were imprisoned on weapons charges in India in 2013 are to be released, according to their lawyer.

    The men, known as the "Chennai Six", were arrested while working as guards on ships to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean.

    Paul Towers, from Pocklington, Ray Tindall, from Hull, and Nicholas Simpson, from Catterick, are among six people who were arrested on firearms charges while on an anti-piracy ship.

    MPs from across all parties have launched a group to "drive business, skills and economic growth" in the north of England.

    The Northern Powerhouse parliamentary group aims to attract investment and highlight issues affecting the region.

    It was set up by the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, a body chaired by former chancellor George Osborne.

    It comes after Manchester mayor Andy Burnham said the country was still "too London-centric".

    Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry said he hoped the group would help to turn the north of England into a "globally-recognised economy".

    They were found guilty of weapons offences while working as security guards on an anti-piracy ship.

    They have always denied charges and are currently about halfway through a five-year sentence.

    If you enjoy sparkling conversation with strangers, there's now a place for you at the Winter Garden in Sheffield.

    The inside retreat is now home to its first ever "talking bench" which is designed to encourage people to sit and chat with each other.

    It's been funded by mental health charity Sheffield Flourish which asked local residents to come up with ideas for building a more mental health-friendly city.

    Sharon Tabberer (pictured) came up with the idea after seeing her father struggle to strike up conversations with people.

    She says: "I thought it'd be a great to have a space in the city where people can just come along, chat to somebody and know that the person sat next to them will chat back."
