  19. Cremation works could mean longer journeyspublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2017

Bereaved families could be facing a longer journey or a wait for funeral services as York's crematorium undergoes maintenance work.

Cremations at the Bishopthorpe site has been cut from about 10 per day, to five during December and January, said City of York Council.

    Crem

Funeral services in the city are to continue but funeral directors may use cremation facilities across Yorkshire.

It is not known when the building will be fully repaired said the council.

Repairs are "complex and involve altering the fabric of the building", it said.

A decision when to increase the number of cremations will be made once council officers are sure the problem has been permanently resolved.

Pauline Stuchfield, City of York Council, said: "The loss of a loved one is hard enough and plans are in place to make these arrangements as easy as possible".

Although waiting times may increase demand is "largely being met by the alternative arrangements", she added.

Alternative crematoria include Bradford, Driffield, Doncaster, Hull, Leeds, Middlesbrough and Scarborough, according to the council.

Driffield and Leeds are the nearest to York, with the rest about 40 miles (65km) away.
