  1. North Yorkshire road re-opens after crashpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    The A168 has re-opened between Thirsk and Northallerton after a serious crash this morning.

    The collision, between the South Kilvington roundabout and Thornton-le-Street, left two women in hospital.

    The road was shut for about five hours while police investigations were carried out.

    Huddersfield Town hope to complete the loan signing of Monaco defender Terence Kongolo in the next 24 hours.

    Terriers boss David Wagner wants to bolster his defensive options and Kongolo could be signed in time for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Bolton.

    Kongolo, 23, only joined Monaco from Dutch side Feyernoord in the summer for 15m euros (£13.38m).

    The Netherlands international has made six appearances this season, mostly at left-back.

  4. More than 260 arrested drink and drug-drivingpublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Over the Christmas period 264 drink and drug-drivers were arrested by West Yorkshire Police - with the highest number of drug drivers arrested since it became an offence.

    Officers say that from 1 December to 1 January they arrested 51 people for driving under the influence of drugs - three have been charged.

    The force say they made the highest number of arrests on New Year's Day - with 18 people taken into custody.

    A "high number" of the offences were committed by over-35s.

    Police Sgt Gary Roper said: "These are individuals who have seen generations of drink-driving campaigns and still have the opinion, 'It’ll never happen to me'."

    How do you fancy helping to maintain one of the most beautiful places in the country?

    For the first time in three years the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority is looking for 19 new volunteers. Tasks include surveying, maintaining and enhancing the public rights of way network in the Park.

    There are 166 Dales volunteers who've worked on things like listed buildings, and carried out museum research. These volunteers will work with area-based ranger teams.

    Would-be volunteers have until 14 January to get an application in.

  6. Police continue to question two men after murderpublished at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Police in Leeds say they are continuing to question two men over the murder of a man in Leeds yesterday.

    The pair, aged 19 and 27, are still speaking to officers after a 50-year-old man died on Rosgill Drive in Seacroft at about 16:30.

    Armed police were called in after reports of a man with a gun. West Yorkshire Police said that although they found a gun at the scene it's not thought it was fired.

    A post-mortem examination is taking place today and officers have not released the victim's name.

  7. Delays on train services through Yorkshirepublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    A broken down train is causing delays for passengers travelling through parts of Yorkshire.

    A train stuck at Peterborough railway station means delays and cancellations for some East Midlands trains, Virgin East Coast services and Grand Central operations.

    National Rail Enquiries expect disruption until around 15:00 this afternoon.

    Here's a summary of the current disruption for the services operating in our area:

    • East Midlands Trains are seeing delays on routes from Sheffield and Leeds to Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street
    • Grand Central Trains have some cancellations on their route between Bradford and London Kings Cross
    • Virgin East Coast has delays and cancellations on its line that runs from York to Leeds and Doncaster and terminates in London Kings Cross

    The latest advice for passengers is as follows:

    • East Midlands Trains services to Liverpool - Trains still running but with delays so arrive at station as planned
    • Virgin Trains East Coast - Tickets being accepted on TransPennine Express routes between Leeds and Newcastle and Cross Country trains that start and terminate at Newcastle but not trains that continue or start in Scotland.

    We'll keep you informed of the latest updates throughout the afternoon.

  8. Travel updates: Major rail disruptionpublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Rail operators tell us that there are delays of up to 90 minutes if you're travelling between Peterborough and Grantham this lunchtime.

    Although a broken down train near Grantham has now been moved and the line re-opened, it will take time for services to return to normal.

    It is mainly affecting services towards Grantham where trains could be cancelled or diverted.

    The disruption is expected to last until early afternoon.

  9. Sheffield man jailed for child sexual exploitationpublished at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 32 months in prison after admitting sending sexually inappropriate messages to a Sheffield teenager.

    Liam Lyndon Devere, formerly of Greystones Road, Sheffield, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday 28 December where he was sentenced after pleading guilty to causing/inciting a girl aged between 13 and 15-years-old to engage in sexual activity.

    The court heard how Devere sent his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sexually explicit communication in a bid to commit sexual offences against her.

    From polar bears to monkeys every single creature on the site is measured, counted and weighed to give the park a clear idea about the numbers they have to look after.

    An 83-year-old woman was thrown to the ground and threatened she would be stabbed during a mugging in Leeds.

    It happened yesterday in Weetwood at 15:10 at the door to her home.

    She was grabbed by a man who told her to hand over her valuables and threatened to stab her. A struggle followed and she was thrown to the ground when the man ran off with her handbag.

    Police say he is white, aged in his 40s, wearing black and grey clothing and a woolly hat.

    What should be done about Leeds' air-pollution problem?

    The city has been singled out as one of the places around the UK which exceeds EU air pollution limits.

    Now Leeds City Council is asking people who live in the city what they think should be done about it.

    The authority says it wants people's views on introducing a Clean Air Zone that would involve charging buses, HGVs, taxis and private hire vehicles if they failed latest emissions standards.

    The zone would cover all roads within the outer ring road but wouldn't include vehicles which cross the city using the M621.

    Police say two female drivers have been taken to hospital after a serious crash on the A168 between Thirsk and Northallerton.

    It happened earlier this morning between the South Kilvington roundabout and Thornton-le-Street.

    The road remains closed while investigations are carried out.

    Diversions are in place.

    The shadow transport secretary's planned visit to Leeds today has been cancelled - because of a broken train.

    Labour's Andy McDonald was due to be at the city's main railway station to talk about rail ticket prices rises.

    But the planned visit has had to be cancelled because he is now stuck on a broken down train and won’t be able to make the appearance.

    Average rail ticket prices have risen by 3.4% across the UK, in the biggest increase to fares since 2013.

  15. Attempted drive-by shooting in Leedspublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Police in Leeds are investigating are an attempted drive-by shooting in an area of the city yesterday afternoon.

    West Yorkshire Police say that a 29-year-old man was walking in Hawksworth at 15:00 when a white van pulled alongside him.

    The man told officers that a gun was fired at him and the van then drove off at speed.

    Forensic officers are still at the scene on Lea Farm Road as they look for "evidence of a discharge."

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the whole of Yorkshire from around 18:00 tonight as the UK prepares for Storm Eleanor to hit.

    With wind speeds now expected to reach 80mph in some areas, the details of the forecast have been adjusted and now sees the public warned to expect flying debris, large waves in coastal areas and possible power cuts and disruption to public transport.

    As yet there is no risk of flooding across Yorkshire.

  17. Teenager injured and man arrested in Rotherham collisionpublished at 11:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after a teenager was seriously injured in a collision in Rotherham.

    Just after midnight two cars were involved in accident on Maltby High Street at the traffic lights at the junction with Grange Lane.

    One of the drivers, an 18-year-old from Maltby, was taken to hospital with a serious arm injury but a second driver, aged 21 from Stainton, was not injured.

    The 21-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury whilst driving dangerously but has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

    Any information on the collision can be passed onto the force via 101.

  18. Huddersfield sees one of biggest house prices rise in UKpublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Huddersfield is among the places in the UK where house prices grew at the fastest pace during 2017, according to research from the Halifax.

    The West Yorkshire town saw prices rise by 9.3%, the lender found. That was the biggest rise of any town outside London and southern England.

    The average increase in house prices across the UK was 2.7%, according to the Halifax which bases the figures on its own mortgage data.

    However, Wakefield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Bradford and Leeds were all places where house prices fell last year.

    The Co-op has announced plans to open a hundred new food stores in 2018, one of them will be in York.

    The retailer says it will create around 1,600 jobs across the UK.
