    There is queuing traffic due to an earlier vehicle fire on M62 Eastbound between J27 M621 / A650 / A62 (Gildersome) and J28 A650 / A653 (Tingley).

  2. Man dies in a fire in Barnsleypublished at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    A man has died following a fire at his home in Barnsley.

    Crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue based at stations in Barnsley, Cudworth, Tankersley and Penistone were called to the blaze on Clarendon Street near Racecommon Road at about 21:30 last night.

    Firefighters wearing breathing equipment found the ground floor of the mid-terraced property well alight.

    The man, believed to be in his 60's, has since died.

    An investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and death will now take place.

    Some families in North Yorkshire have criticised special educational services saying they are failing parents and families.

    The number of parents lodging an appeal with the local authority has increased in the last year.

    Jean Banwell from Old Malton took the local authority to a tribunal hearing to get her 11-year-old-son to a particular school:

    North Yorkshire County Council says it has not reduced its budget and it is trying to resolve disagreements.

    It also says that it recognises the number of appeals has gone up along with the rest of England.

  4. Workshops to tackle extremism taking place in Sheffieldpublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    A series of workshops is taking place in Sheffield in an effort to tackle issues including extremism, gang culture and hate crime.

    The classes are being run by Aden Steelers Football Club in Burngreave and are working with young people mainly from a Muslim background.

  6. Sydney seaplane victim born in Yorkshirepublished at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2018

    Richard Cousins - who was one of the six people who were killed in a seaplane crash in Australia on New Year's Eve - was born in Leeds and went to the University of Sheffield.

    Mr Cousins (pictured below, top left) died alongside his fiancée, three children and the pilot of the aircraft.

    The family was flying back to Sydney from a restaurant when the single-engine aircraft crashed into the Hawkesbury River.

    An investigation is underway and a preliminary report is expected before the end of January.

    Sheffield Wednesday have announced Katrien Meire as their new chief executive.

    She held the same position at Charlton Athletic before leaving the London club in December after she and the owner Roland Duchatelet were the target of protests from unhappy fans about how the club was being run.

    Her arrival at Hillsborough comes after a turbulent couple of weeks which saw head coach, Carlos Carvalhal leave by mutual consent and slide in results on the pitch including a 3-0 defeat to Burton Albion on New Years Day.

    If you've had to buy a season ticket or rail ticket this morning you might have had a bit of a shock when it came to pay for it.

    The biggest increase in rail fares in five years came into effect this morning.

    Protests are expected at York, Sheffield and Leeds stations and at other stations across the country.

    Annual season tickets have gone up by 3.6%.

    The average rise in fares is 3.4 percent.

    Paul Barnfield from Northern says passengers are already getting the benefit of previous rises.

    Police have been given more time to question a man who was arrested in Yorkshire on suspicion of terrorism offences.

    The 21-year-old was picked up in the Firth Park area of Sheffield on Friday on suspicion of commissioning, preparing or instigating acts of terrorism.

    Detectives have until this evening to hold and question him.

    A vigil will be held later by the family of a man who was shot dead by police on a motorway slip road near Huddersfield one year ago.

    Yassar Yaqub was killed in the planned operation on the M62.

    The police watchdog says an investigation into his death won't be completed until another man, who was arrested at the time, has been on trial.

    A Sheffield bar has been closed temporarily by South Yorkshire police following an incident in which two men were left with life-threatening stab wounds.

    Five men were stabbed or slashed during a fight at a New Year's Eve party at Crystal Bar on Carver Street in Sheffield city centre - two of them are in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

    A temporary closure notice was posted outside the bar.

    Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley said: "We have reviewed the incident and surrounding circumstances and we believe that to protect the public, the closure order is necessary".

    The closure is due to be discussed in court later today.

    There'll be a protest at Leeds station this morning and one at York this afternoon, over the biggest increase in rail fares for five years.

    The Rail, Maritime and Transport Union says the hike will "worsen the cost of living crisis".

    Tickets have gone up by an average of 3.4% today.

    The Department for Transport said price rises were capped in line with inflation. But some customers don't feel they're getting value for money.

    Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a man in Leeds.

    Armed police were called to a house in Seacroft yesterday afternoon following reports of a man with a gun. Emergency crews found the victim with a head injury on Rosgill Drive and tried to treat his injuries, but he died at the scene.

    Detectives say investigations into his death are at an early stage but they don't believe the gun was fired.

    They want to speak to anyone with any information about the suspected murder.
