    A council in North Yorkshire says reported incidents of fly-tipping went up by a quarter last year and the cost of clearing illegally dumped rubbish has doubled in the past couple of years.

    That's according to a review of the way Hambleton Council deals with fly tippers, which partly blames charges introduced by North Yorkshire County Council for the disposal of building waste.

    The two councils say they're working together, using whatever powers they can, to stop people dumping rubbish illegally.

  6. Car driven in 'erratic manner' crashes in Scarboroughpublished at 17:45 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Police in Scarborough are appealing for witnesses after a crash this afternoon:

    It happened on Main Street in Seamer outside Proudfoots and involved three cars.

    North Yorkshire Police say a silver Toyota Prius (pictured top) was being driven in an "erratic manner" and may have hit street furniture.

    People in the other two cars were taken to Scarborough Hospital but are not thought to be seriously injured.

    Officials from across Yorkshire say they're ready to submit a plan to the government for an elected mayor for the whole region.

    A total of 18 of the 20 council leaders in the region are supporting the proposal.

    The opportunity for local decision-makers to take on extra powers has been on offer for some time, but councils haven't been able to agree on how it would work.

    South Yorkshire is getting its own mayor.

    Last week, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said he wasn't ruling out a deal for the "widest possible geography" for Yorkshire.

    But he added that the Sheffield City Region mayoral elections must go ahead in May this year as planned.

  8. Leonne Weeks' killer murdered teenager 'for sake of it'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    The judge who sentenced the killer of Dinnington teenager Leonne Weeks to more than 24 years in prison told him: "You killed her for the sake of it".

    Paul Watson QC described the teenager's murder by Shea Peter Heeley, 19, as a "pre-planned, brutal and pitiless killing of an innocent young girl who had her whole life before her".

    The judge said that her death "will leave a permanent hole in the hearts of the many who knew her and loved her".

    He also told Heeley: "It is clear that it was always your intention to kill her when the two of you met."

    Heeley was jailed for life with a minimum term of 24-and-a-half years.

  9. Men cut by 'bladed weapon' in Batley nightclub assaultpublished at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Two men have been injured by what police are describing as a bladed weapon in an incident at a Batley nightclub.

    Police say they want to speak to anyone who saw the incident at Chapo’s nightclub on Bradford Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    Officers say a dispute took place involving three males .

    A 26-year-old man received wounds to his legs and the other man was treated in hospital for an injury to his back.

    Another 26-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of wounding with intent and is in police custody.

    A 69-year-old woman has died after a car crash near Leeds yesterday afternoon.

    It happened at 14:05 on A659 Harewood Avenue when a white Vauxhall Astra van and a black BMW 1 Series collided.

    The woman was a front seat passenger in the Vauxhall - she died at the scene.

    The driver of the Vauxhall - a 70-year-old male - and a 27-year-old woman who was driving the BMW were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.

  11. Two women trapped after Huddersfield car crashpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Three women were rescued from this car yesterday in Huddersfield:

    It happened on Copley Bank Road, Wellhouse at 11:30.

    One of the women managed to get out herself, two others were trapped and had to be rescued by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

    Luckily they were left with only minor injuries.

  13. Police: Leonne Weeks killer 'knew what he was doing'published at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Police have said the man who killed Rotherham teenager Leonne Weeks "knew what he was doing" despite concerns about his mental health.

    Shea Peter Heeley, of Doe Quarry Lane, Dinnington, stabbed the teenager 28 times and was convicted after CCTV put him in the area and his DNA was found on Leonne's ankle.

    Heeley was transferred to Rampton Secure Hospital in September last year after concerns about his mental health.

    However, after tests from medical experts he was deemed mentally fit to stand trial.

    Heeley was sentenced to 24-and-a-half years in prison at Sheffield Crown Court this morning..

  14. Extra staff on hand to deal with burst pipespublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Yorkshire Water says it drafted in extra staff this weekend to deal with a potential increase in burst water pipes.

    Across the UK thousands of homes are without water with suppliers saying a thaw has led to burst water mains and leaks.

    In our region, there have been reports of a couple of "big burst pipes" this morning, according to Yorkshire Water, who also say they're "working hard to keep water supplies to customers".

    The company has told customers to check their pipes, both internal and external as things thaw out.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who was found dead in a North Yorkshire village.

    The woman, who has not been named, was found at a house in Cawood (pictured), between York and Selby, in the early hours of Monday.

    The man, 49, was arrested in Hawkshead, Cumbria, and remains in custody.

    North Yorkshire Police said officers would remain in the village to provide reassurance to residents.

    Train operator Northern say a broken down freight train has meant that some lines were blocked for a time - It has since been moved.

    Issues on the rails in Yorkshire have been compounded by other trains that were damaged by the cold weather last week.

    The Yorkshire Ambulance Service is reminding people to only call 999 for life-threatening emergencies.

    The service says it is currently experiencing "very high demand" and is asking people to use alternatives where possible.
