    Police have arrested a man in Cumbria on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found in a village near Selby.

    This discovery was made in the early hours of this morning after police were called to an "incident" at a house in Cawood.

    A 49-year-old man was arrested in the Hawkshead area of Cumbria and he remains in custody.

    Det Insp Steve Menzies, from North Yorkshire Police, says: "I understand this incident will cause concern to the local community, but officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be in the area today to provide reassurance."

    The man who killed South Yorkshire teenager Leonne Weeks has been sentenced to 24-and-a-half years in jail.

    Shea Peter Heeley, 19, of Doe Quarry Lane, Dinnington, admitted murdering 16-year-old Leonne last month.

    Her body was found on a pathway in Dinnington, near Rotherham, on 16 January last year

    Heeley has already been in prison for a year so will serve 23 years 134 days before he can be considered for parole.

    He was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court.

    A "crude improvised explosive device" was found by police during a search at a house in Sheffield at the weekend, police have revealed.

    A cordon at the property on Abbey Lane was lifted last night after being put in place on Saturday.

    Three people were arrested on suspicion of making an explosive device with intent to cause harm.

    A 28-year-old man has since been bailed, while an 18-year-old woman and 20-year-old man have been released under investigation.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.

    A shelter in Leeds which ran out of coats to give to the homeless says it's now had a wave of donations.

    St George's Crypt made an appeal last week when snow hit the city.

    Since then it's received more than 200 coats - and most have already been handed out to those in need.

    The company is looking at a five-year plan which it says will secure the future of its sites in East and North Yorkshire.

    The proposed redundancies could affect up to 231 full-time equivalent posts across the college's three sites, including HCUK Training.

    It says it's also looking at out-sourcing some services and making changes to its curriculum.

    An 11,000-year-old pendant found in Yorkshire features on BBC 2 this week, as the programme Civilisations takes a journey through time.

    All sorts of wonderful items like headresses, jewellery and stone tools have been found in Yorkshire.

    The stone pendant, the oldest Mesolithic art in Britain, was found at Star Carr, near Scarborough.

    A 28-year-old man has been released on bail while a 20-year-old man and 18-year-old woman have been released under investigation.

    Police are asking for your help to find a missing Sheffield mum and her two children.

    Charlene Ramsey, aged 37, left the Maxwell Street area on Friday morning with Lachara Campbell, aged nine, and one-year-old Lateef Lawlal-Adbgoke.

    Police believe they may have travelled to the Bury area but no-one has heard from them.

    A woman and a four-year-old child have been taken to hospital after this car crashed into a shop in Wakefield:

    It happened at 21:20 yesterday on Calder Vale Road.

    The driver, a woman in her 30s, and her four-year-old child were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.

    West Yorkshire Police say they are continuing their investigations following the crash.

    The worst of the snow appears to have now cleared, although fog has caused problems with visibility in many areas this morning.

    A cameraman fell victim to a slam dunk in a Sheffield Sharks basketball match.

    He was knocked over when the ball and a player went into the crowd in the game against the Leicester Riders last night.

    The leader of the opposition Lib Dems on Sheffield Council has criticised the authority for not providing enough grit for the city's snow wardens.

    Shaffaq Mohammed, who is also a snow warden, says that when he set up the scheme in 2010 volunteers were provided with a shovel, hi-vis jacket and a tonne of grit.

    He's now criticising the council for removing the grit from wardens.

    In response, Sheffield Council said volunteers were mainly in the south west of the city and the benefits of the scheme were not spread across all communities.

    The authority added some wardens didn't show up to training, others couldn't accept the deliveries of grit while some were stockpiling it for personal use.

  18. Clean up at Kirby Misperton fracking protest camppublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Campaigners against fracking at a site in North Yorkshire have pledged to restore the camp site at Kirby Misperton by Easter.

    They've said the site alongside on the main road into the village, will be put back to its "former state" and there'll be a formal closing ceremony.

    The camp at Kirby Misperton was established in 2016 after Third Energy was granted planning permission to frack for shale gas nearby.

    The company is still waiting for final consent from the government and has moved some equipment off the site.

    Campaigners said despite the camp's closure they would maintain a presence at the entrance to the site.

  19. Electricity supply being restored to homespublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March 2018

    Northern Powergrid says it's restored electricity supplies to almost 60,000 homes across Yorkshire, northern Lincolnshire and the north east over the last few days.

    But more than 130 properties, mainly in the Ryedale and Whitby area of North Yorkshire, are still without power.

    Rachel Harrison in the Scrayingham area of Ryedale says she's been without electricity for more than 28 hours.

    This follows the loss of power to 830 homes in Sherburn, between Malton and Scarborough, at the weekend.

    Northern Powergrid say they're aiming to get power back on by 11:00 this morning.
