    A lorry driver from Sheffield has denied causing the death of another motorist in a crash on the A66 in Cumbria.

    Jamie Armstrong, 30, from Haltwhistle, Northumberland, died at the scene near Kirkby Stephen at about 05:50 on 8 September 2016.

    Appearing at Carlisle Crown Court, Ashley Cole (pictured), 56, of Mellor Lea Farm, Ecclesfield, denied causing death by dangerous driving.

    He was bailed and will go on trial on 20 August.

    In a tribute released at the time of his death, Mr Armstrong's family said he "was a fun-loving lad who loved travelling and work. He always lived life to the full".

    Three men have been arrested after a man was shot outside a takeaway in Huddersfield on Monday.

    It happened in the early hours of Monday morning outside Raja's takeaway on Bradford Road.

    A 24-year-old man suffered serious injuries and has been treated in hospital.

    A 24-year-old man has been arrested for attempted murder.

    Two further men, aged 20 and 22, have been arrested for assisting an offender.

    The NSPCC has urged parents to talk to their children about online safety after a former TV producer was jailed today for trying to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex in Leeds.

    Kieran Creaven flew from Ireland to Leeds intending to meet the girl, but was confronted by so-called paedophile hunters who had tricked him into thinking the girl was real.

    An NSPCC spokesperson said: "Creaven’s victim may have been fictitious, but the threat he poses to children is very real.

    "This case shows just how vital it is for parents and others talk to children about how to stay safe online."

    It happened on 25 February in Tickhill Road when two men broke into the house through the back door.

    They then forced their way into two locked rooms in the house and took a large quantity of gold jewellery.

    An Irish former TV sports producer who flew from Dublin to Leeds to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex, but was actually tricked by so-called paedophile hunters, has been jailed for 18 months.

    Kieran Creaven, who worked at Irish broadcaster RTE, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court today and admitted attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity last year.

    He also pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following grooming for a sexual purpose.

    The offences were said to have taken place from 1 July, when the defendant first made contact online, to 18 November when he arrived at The Queens Hotel in the city.

    At a hearing in November, prosecutor Jill Seddon told Leeds Magistrates' Court that Creaven, from Dublin, sent an explicit photograph.

    Scarborough Bridge will be nearly three times its current width and cyclists, wheelchair users and people pushing prams will be able to use it with ease, the council says.

    A former TV sports producer who was confronted by so-called paedophile hunters in Leeds has been jailed for 18 months.

    Kieran Creaven, who worked for the Irish broadcaster RTE, flew from Ireland to Leeds intending to meet a girl of 13.

    However, he had actually been in touch with a group trying to catch sex offenders and was filmed in City Square being led off by a police officer.

    At Leeds Crown Court in December, the 55-year-old admitted attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

  14. Northern workers to strike on two more days this monthpublished at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

    A further two 24-hour strikes by workers at train operator Northern will take place this month in a dispute over driver-only-operated trains, the RMT union has confirmed.

    The action will take place on 26 and 29 March, with the RMT calling for talks with Arriva North, which runs Northern services, and the Department for Transport.

    Mick Cash, from the RMT, said: "No-one should be in any doubt, this dispute is about putting the safety of the travelling public before the profits of the private train companies."
