    A man has been arrested after a laser was shone at the police helicopter in Leeds last night.

    The crew had been scrambled after they were searching for a car which was involved in a police pursuit in the Horsforth area.

    A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of endangering an aircraft and is still in police custody.

    York Register Office will reopen for weddings tomorrow.

    The Grade II listed Georgian building has been refurbished as part of a £130,000 scheme.

    The building now has a new 'Ebor room', improved reception area, and the ceremony room has been relocated downstairs to make it more accessible.

    Police have urged people in the Burngreave area to come forward with information after two stabbings.

    One man, named locally as Jarvin Blake, was killed while a second man is in a critical condition in hospital.

    The pair were allegedly chased and attacked by a group of people who got out of a vehicle yesterday afternoon on Catherine Street.

    South Yorkshire Police believe information about the stabbings lies within the community and are urging people to contact them on 101.

    UB40 are going to play live at Castle Howard this summer.

    Ali Campbell, Astro, and Mickey Virtue will be performing at the stately home on 19 August.

    The concert will take place outside and Castle Howard are asking people to bring folding chairs and rugs to sit on.

    UB40 will be supported by Aswad and Loose Ends, featuring Carl McIntosh.

    The first ever sight conference in Doncaster launches today for blind and partially-sighted people.

    Senior medical and research professionals will be on hand to listen to the personal stories of those who come along and offer support to them.

    It's been organised by the Partially Sighted Society in the town and will take place at the Trades and Labour Club in the Frenchgate centre, although pre-booking a place is essential.

    Children who almost had their dream trip cancelled are now on the way to Barcelona.

    The students from Knavesmire Primary School were turned away from the boarding gates at Leeds Bradford Airport yesterday after their coach got stuck in the snow.

    Their airline, Jet2.com, had already extended the check-in by two hours and 40 minutes, but the group arrived just after that.

    A gin shop in York has achieved a Guinness World Record for the most varieties of gin commercially available.

    Evil Eye broke the record with 1,026 different gins in their shop and bar, and that's just the be-gin-ning.

    They've added two more gins to their collection since the Guinness World Record team came to count the stock.

    But "Calendar Girls - The Album" has just been released. It features songs from the original cast of the London musical.

    Calderdale Council says it's making major progress towards narrowing the salary difference between men and women.

    Conservative councillor Ian Gillies has been confirmed as the new leader of the City of York Council.

    It was announced last night after weeks of debate about who the leader should be.

    The stand-off began when former Conservative council leader David Carr was sacked after a vote of no confidence within his own party.

    However, the Conservatives run the city in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats, who did not back Ian Gillies as the new leader at the time.

    Homeless people in Sheffield are refusing accommodation so that they can beg, police say.

    South Yorkshire Police say that some people are sleeping outside so they can beg later into the night and then start again early in the morning.

    It's thought that there's around 30 people who regularly sleep outside in the city.

    A TV sports producer who was confronted by so-called paedophile hunters in Leeds is due to be sentenced later.

    Kieran Creaven, who works for the Irish broadcaster RTE, flew from Ireland to Leeds intending to meet a girl of 13.

    However, the girl didn't exist.

    He had actually been in touch with a group trying to catch sex offenders and was filmed in City Square being led off by a police officer.

    The 55-year-old admitted attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity at Leeds Crown Court in December.

    He will be sentenced later today.

  16. Man stabbed to death in Sheffieldpublished at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2018

    A 22-year-old man has been stabbed to death in Sheffield and another man has been seriously wounded.

    The incident happened in Burngreave at around 15:15 yesterday afternoon.

    South Yorkshire Police were called by ambulance staff to reports of a stabbing in Brackley Street at the junction with Catherine Street in Burngreave.

    The man was taken to hospital with stab wounds to his upper body and pronounced dead shortly after.

    A 23-year-old man who sustained injuries from the same incident is in hospital, where his condition is described as serious but stable.

    Detectives are carrying out inquiries and an investigation is under way.
