    A man has pleaded guilty to murdering supermarket worker Jodie Willsher, in Skipton, North Yorkshire.

    The 30-year-old was attacked at the store in Keighley Road at about 15:30 on Thursday 21 December 2017.

    A number of people witnessed what happened.

    Nevil Hord, 44, appeared in Bradford Crown court this morning.

    Volunteers at a boxing centre and fitness club in Sheffield say they could be forced to move if a retail development goes ahead.

    Organisers who run De Hood Community Project in Manor Top say over the past seven years the centre has improved health and reduced crime in the area.

    They've set up an online petition calling for the building to be transferred into an "Asset of Community Value" and the granting of a long-term lease.

    The centre is located in the Old Prince Edward School Building, which the council is considering turning into a retail development.

    Councillors say they will be discuss the plans with the gym's volunteers.

    Highways England says there are currently delays of 20 minutes.

    It's all down to an earlier accident which has now been cleared.

    A 27-year-old man from Doncaster has gone missing from his home on Warmsworth Road, Balby.

    Sam Jennings was reported missing yesterday.

    He is described as white about 5ft 11ins tall, with dark hair and of a slim build.

    Police say they believe he may be wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

    York-based house-builder Persimmon has appointed Roger Devlin as its new chairman to replace Nicholas Wrigley who left following controversy over the firm's executive bonus scheme.

    Mr Devlin will join the company on 1 June. He is also chairman designate of the bookmaker William Hill, chairman of pub operator Marston's and senior independent director of the Football Association.

    He will step down from Marston's and the FA.

    Mr Devlin says he "looks forward to working with Jeff Fairburn, his executive team and the board".

    Chief executive Mr Fairburn recently agreed to give up part of a share-based bonus worth nearly £100m.

    BBC Look North presenters Harry, Amy and Paul are taking their famous red sofa on tour in Yorkshire and it's a case of "so-fa so good".

    They plan to visit 50 locations around Yorkshire over eight days to raise money for Sport Relief.

    Today's their first day and the team's heading from Birstall to Ossett.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a man threw a bottle and glass at a Scarborough pub and posted a threatening message to its new tenants.

    The incident happened between 02:10 and 02:20 am on Friday 2 March outside the Shakespeare Pub on St Helen's Square.

    The man was wearing an orange or red hat and black clothing and was carrying a rucksack. He was later seen walking away towards Friargate.

    Anyone who saw what happened, or has CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident, is being asked to contact police.

    Macy Prentice, from Leeds, who we reported yesterday had gone missing, has been found.

    She hadn't been seen since Sunday, but is now "safe and well", according to police.

  12. Sheffield MPs call for 'pause' in city tree fellingpublished at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    A second Sheffield MP has called for the city council to pause tree-felling.

    Louise Haigh, Labour MP for Sheffield, first made the call last week, and now Paul Blomfield, Labour MP for Sheffield Central, has written a statement on his website, external saying he'd "like to see a pause in the work for more discussion to resolve the current conflict".

    The tree felling is part of Sheffield City Council's £2bn Streets Ahead project, aimed at improving roads and footpaths in the city. About 5,500 trees have been cut down since 2012.

    The council, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists the trees earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

    However, many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which campaigners say should be saved.

    Instead, they say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.

    Businesses in Elland town centre in West Yorkshire are calling for an hour's free car parking for shoppers.

    Firms there say they're still suffering from the effects of the 2015 floods, which saw the collapse of Elland Bridge which didn't reopen again until the beginning of 2017.

    Two banks have also closed their branches in the town.

    Calderdale Council is due to decide later whether to back the plan.

    The Man Booker Prize-nominated author Fiona Mozley will help launch York's Literature Festival today.

    A pilot scheme in West Yorkshire to get more homes and businesses connected up with superfast broadband will now be rolled out nationwide.

    The National Gigabit Voucher Scheme's been available in West Yorkshire since late last year, but now the rest of the country will be able to take part.

    Under the scheme, small businesses get a voucher worth £3,000 to help them get connected with fibre broadband while everyone else can benefit for £500 by joining a community scheme.

    Only 3% of homes currently have a full fibre connection, while the government wants ten million homes and businesses to have it by 2022.

    The Chancellor Philip Hammond's due to come to Bradford later to make the official announcement.

    Hillsborough football stadium in Sheffield has been included in a list of locations and defining events that "best represent the history of England".

    Historic England, external is compiling A History of England in 100 places "to encourage debate about which places best tell the country's national story".

    The stadium, the site of the 1989 football disaster, was included in an initial shortlist of 10 locations.

    The project is being put together based on public nominations, external.

    Ninety-six football fans died following crushing at Hillsborough during an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

    Families of the victims later campaigned for a new inquiry into the deaths, and in 2016 new inquests found the fans had been unlawfully killed.

    The inquests concluded the supporters themselves were not to blame for the disaster.

    Historian Mary Beard, who judged nominations for the shortlist, said: "This is such a powerful symbol of human tenacity in pursuit of justice after terrible loss of life."

  17. High Court considers future of Huddersfield hospitalpublished at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    The future of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) is due to be discussed in the High Court in Leeds later.

    Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust wants to close the HRI, replace it with a smaller 64-bed unit and move A&E services to Halifax.

    The trust says the proposals are based on medical advice from clinicians.

    But campaigners are seeking permission for a judicial review into the decision.

    The number of children being permanently excluded from secondary schools in North Yorkshire has doubled in the past five years, new statistics show.

    Figures from North Yorkshire County Council show the number of exclusions is secondary schools has gone up from 40 in 2011-12 to 86 last year.

    However, that number is still below the national average.
