    A man who "acted selflessly" and saved the life of an elderly man who was standing close to the edge of a bridge has been honoured.

    Samuel Atkinson, aged 24, has been presented with a commendation from the Royal Humane Society,

    He was driving to work along Keresforth Hill Road when he saw a a man standing on the bridge over the road in October 2016.

    He stopped his car and went to speak to him.

    Mr Atkinson was presented with the award by Ch Supt Scott Green of South Yorkshire Police.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Bank Holiday Monday which covers most of Yorkshire.

    According to the warning there is the possibility of heavy snow over parts of England, Wales and southern Scotland, especially for high ground.

    This means that travel may be affected.

    There's a small chance of travel delays on roads along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

    It's exactly one year before the UK is due to leave the European Union and enter a transition period, but a Leeds MP says she isn't happy with some of the compromises in the transition deal.

    Conservative Andrea Jenkyns says she is concerned over plans for the EU to have a role in UK fishing waters for more than a year after we leave.

    She said: “I wouldn’t say I’m happy but, let’s face it, the Prime Minister has got a very difficult job so it’s never going to be plain sailing when the make-up of parliament is like it is.”

    The Morley and Outwood MP supported Brexit in the referendum and is a member of the Exciting the European Union Select Committee.

    The Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are among five pilot areas for a new scheme to rescue farm buildings.

    The Historic Building Restoration Grant , externalis being piloted in Dartmoor, Lake District, Northumberland, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks with £2 million of funding available.

    The aim of the scheme is to help save the iconic historic farm buildings in the English National Parks from falling out of use.

    The grant offers 80% towards the cost of restoration.

    A man has been filmed cutting down a CCTV camera in Holme Wood in Bradford last night.

    The footage shows the man using a power tool to cut down a lamppost with the camera fitted to it.

    The surveillance camera had only recently been installed.

    Police say an investigation is “very much ongoing”.

    The two people who were struck by a train at Doncaster station on Tuesday night were a 27-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man from the Doncaster area.

    Police say the deaths are not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

    House prices have gone up 4.1% in Yorkshire and Humberside over the last quarter, according to Nationwide's House Price Index.

    The average price of homes in the area has rose to £156,954.

    The change across the country is up to 2.5%, while in London house prices fell by 1%.

  12. New chocolate factory in famous confectionery city of Yorkpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

    A new chocolate factory will open in York today, the city which, of course, is famed for its confectionery history.

    It's being opened near the street where the Tuke family started manufacturing chocolate in the 1700s, becoming some of the first people in the country to do so.

    York later became home to Terry's and Rowntree's creating thousands of jobs for the city.

    Sophie Jewett (pictured, left) is behind the Chocolate Factory on Castlegate where visitors will be able to see chocolate being made from scratch.

    She said: "As chocolatiers we were having to rely on a chocolate product that was being imported, with cocoa that we didn't know where it had come from, who had made it, who had farmed it.

    "York has this identity, we have so many experts in the city, why aren't we doing something to bring that back?

    "Lets bring chocolate making back to York, lets bring it back to the UK and let's give people the opportunity to come and see where it's made."

    The factory, which has been partly paid for by an online crowdfunding page which has raised more than £300,000, is opening its doors just in time for Easter.

    Unions have accused the government of "lying" over the controversial decision not to proceed with the electrification of the Midlands Mainline.

    The claim follows the publication of a National Audit Office report that claimed the main reason for the cancellation was financial.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling had said the project would not go ahead because it was not necessary to electrify the line to deliver passenger benefits.

    Mick Whelan, general secretary of the train drivers' union Aslef, said: "It is clear from the conclusions of the NAO investigation that Chris Grayling lied.

    "The truth is, the government didn't want to find the money."

    However, a Department for Transport spokesman said: "As this report makes clear, we are focused on delivering better trains and services to passengers more quickly, at better value for money for the taxpayer, without the significant disruption to services that electrification can cause."

    Scarborough's Central Tramway has re-opened ahead of the summer tourism season.

    Since 1881, it's connected the town centre on Marine Parade with the beach at South Bay.

    People of all ages have spoken to councillors about how the De Hood club on the Manor has changed their lives.

    But the club's future is now in doubt due to redevelopment plans.

    At a meeting, councillors in Sheffield heard from members of the club and received a 5,000-signature petition lobbying them to help.

    Club members have been told that the council will work with them as they try to establish what the future holds.

    Sheffield's urban peregrine falcons are currently sitting on a clutch of three eggs - with another expected soon, just in time for Easter.

    They first nested six years ago on St George's Church at the University of Sheffield and the university has a camera feeding live images, external of activity at the nesting site:

    Each year since the site was established the falcons using the nest have produced four eggs - and it looks like the same is going to happen in 2018.
