Peter Pickering (pictured), 80, was "strongly suspected" of murdering Wakefield schoolgirl Elsie Frost in 1965, police say.

Dubbed the "Beast of Wombwell", Pickering was detained under a hospital order after admitting stabbing and strangling 14-year-old Shirley Boldy in Wombwell, near Barnsley, in 1972.

Last week he was convicted of raping a woman weeks before killing Shirley Boldy and was waiting to be sentenced.

Det Supt Nick Wallen, from West Yorkshire Police, said it's "almost like at the eleventh hour justice has been snatched away" from Elsie Frost's family.

Elsie's brother and sister, who have worked with police over the last two years, experienced a day of "disbelief and anger" when Pickering's death was announced, said Det Supt Wallen.

He added the level of evidence police found led to "very strong belief" Peter Pickering was responsible for the murder of Elsie.

He says police were "very hopeful" that within the next few weeks the Crown Prosecution Service was going to announce Pickering was to be charged with her murder.

Doing up a house can cost a heck of a lot: The heating system, the kitchen, new flooring and so on.

However, the bill of about £200m to restore South Yorkshire's Grade I-listed Wentworth Woodhouse takes that to new heights.

    Wentworth Woodhouse

The scale of the work to be done on the listed building is enormous, with 365 rooms together with a facade wider than that of Buckingham Palace.

Parts of the house are in an extremely bad state, as I found out when I had a look round the place last year when the estimated bill was already £100m:

The plan for the site now is fluid: there'll almost certainly be a visitor experience, definitely an event location and probably some of it will be converted into homes.
