    A £30m plan to improve the Piccadilly area of York will go before senior city councillors later today.

    The scheme includes scrapping the Clifford's Tower car park and building a multi-storey on St George's field instead.

    The council's executive will be asked to approve a first investment of nearly £2.5m so the plans can progress.

    Leeds will play two games in May in the country, where families have fled their homes because of military operations.

    Owner Andrea Radrizzani has defended the trip, after criticism from shadow sports minister Dr Rosena Allin-Khan.

    Leeds North East MP Fabian Hamilton said in a statement "This tour would damage the reputation of our great city and Leeds United’s loyal fans. I urge Andrea Radrizzani to call it off now.”

    More than 16,000 people have now signed an online petition, external to save Filey's fishing heritage.

    The fear is that new rules from the Environment Agency could shorten the sea trout catching season, putting people out of business.

    The change is intended to protect stocks of salmon that get caught in the same nets.

  5. Proof needed for CCTV camera use in York botanical gardenpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

    The people who run York's Museum Gardens, a riverside botanical park in the centre of the city, have been asked to produce more evidence to support their bid to have CCTV cameras installed there, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

    Earlier this year, following an increased terror threat the York Museums Trust (YMT) applied for planning permission to install the cameras at the park entrance and on some of its buildings.

    At the time a museum spokeman said it had followed advice from law enforcement agencies and would "offer further protection to the public and to our historic buildings from any anti-social behaviour in the area".

    Now planning documents show one of the council's own planning officers asking for written justification on why the cameras are needed.

    The gardens contain five listed buildings and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, a scheduled ancient monument.

    A spokesman for the YMT said that since receiving new guidance from the city council, it has submitted a more detailed document for planners to consider.

    Police say a man and a woman have been found injured after reports of a shooting in Sheffield.

    People reported hearing shots around 21:45 last night around Crown Place behind Park Hill flats.

    A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital and later a 43-year-old injured woman was also taken to hospital.

    Officers beleive both were injured in the same incident.

    York Minster's Grand Organ is to undergo a major £2m restoration for the first time in 100 years.

    The instrument dates back to 1834.

    More than 5,000 of the organ's pipes will be removed and repaired.

    The project starts this autumn and will take nearly two years.

    A man from Rotherham has admitted offences involving indecent images of children.

    Jason O'Hanlon, 24, of Beech Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

    He's been given a two-year-suspended prison sentence, a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and he's been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for two years.

    His computer equipment was also ordered to be destroyed.

    O'Hanlon originally pleaded not guilty to the offences, but changed his plea to guilty on what would have been the first day of his trial.

    It's happened at J28 westbound and has completely closed the carriageway to all traffic.

    Police and Highways England workers are currently trying to clear the road.

    Highways England says the road could remain closed until 18:00 depending on how long it takes to move the truck.

    An overturned lorry which has shed its load is expected to to keep the M62 closed at J28 westbound until at least 18:00, according to Highways England:

    Motorists are being diverted via the exit and entry slips at J28 as police and Highways England workers try to clear the scene.

    There are delays back to J30.

    Drivers are being told to use M1 and M621 to keep going on the M62 westward and for the Midlands to use M1.

    One person has been arrested after a man who was found unconscious at a Wakefield hotel died.

    Emergency Services were called to a hotel on Denby Dale Road at about 01:13 this morning after a 36-year-old man was found unconscious.

    He was taken to hospital but died later, a post mortem examination will be carried out to find out the cause of his death.

    West Yorkshire Police have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply in connection with the death.

    Could self-driving taxis be coming to Leeds later this year?

    The PODs, like the one above, are already in use at Heathrow Airport and there are plans to trial them in Leeds city centre later this year.

    Telecoms operator AQL and Gulf Oil want to deploy the driverless taxis on the city's South Bank and say the technology "has the potential to reshape public transport".

    The consortium also claims that the taxis will "also improve passenger and pedestrian safety".

    A man held in Pakistan over a house fire in Huddersfield that killed eight members of the same family is fighting extradition to the UK.

    Shahid Mohammed was arrested on suspicion of murder in Pakistan in 2015 after 12 years on the run.

    He is wanted over the fire in Bikrby in 2002, which killed five young sisters, their mother, uncle and grandfather.

    As first reported in the Huddersfield Examiner, external, the Home Office said he had appealed against extradition.
