    Armed robbers escaped with £20,000 worth of gold after a heist at a jewellers in Huddersfield.

    Five men forced their way inside the shop on Sufton Street, Birkby, last Thursday.

    The shop owner was thrown to the floor before the thieves smashed display cases with sledge hammers.

    The robbers fled in a white Ford Transit, which was later found dumped a short distance away, before transferring into a cream or white car and driving off along Bradford Road.

    The plan to build around 20,000 new homes in York over the next 20 years will be discussed by councillors later.

    The government wants the council to submit a local plan by the end of the month and if it doesn't they will intervene.

    A report, external warns if that happened then the city would lose the ability to "steer, promote or restrict development" across the city.

    Senior councillors are expected to approve the Local Plan next week and full council will have their say on 17 May.

    People reported hearing the sound of automatic gunfire on Bransby Street, Walkley, two weeks ago.

    Detectives now believe a small hatchback could hold the key to the case.

    Police searching for a woman missing from Barnsley have found a body.

    Pamela Kennedy was reported missing from the Hoylandswaine area on Monday.

    The 65 year-old's body was recovered from Langsett Reservoir.

    Officers said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

    Four towns and cities in Yorkshire have been named as places which have the lowest wages in the UK.

    People living in Bradford, Huddersfield, Doncaster and Barnsley earn the least in the country, according to research by the Centre for Cities, external.

    Huddersfield has the second lowest wage of any large town or city, with its workers earning £424 per week on average.

    There are no prizes for guessing that salaries are highest in London, where the average weekly wage is £727.

    Hundreds of students had to be evacuated from their flats in the early hours of this morning after a burst pipe flooded their accommodation.

    James Douglas, from Harrogate, caught the flooding at Leeds Sky Plaza on camera:

    The 19-year-old, who is studying building surveying at Leeds Beckett, said he became aware of the problem at 03:30:

    "My flat mate was awake at the time and heard thundering water," he said.

    "At first he thought it was outside but then he came out of the flat and went down a floor and there was water all over the landing and the stairs."

    Unite Students, who manage the building, said it was trying to arrange alternative accommodation for the students.

    The test, which takes just minutes to administer, involves analysing the sweat deposits which remain on the fingertips after death.

    Coastguard teams have warned people against 'wave dodging' after reports of people taking part in the activity in Scarborough's North Bay last night.

    The reports led to police closing the road between Chain Hill and the Sands development until the high winds had subsided.

    The promenade leading to the Sea Life Centre was also closed.

    Coastguard teams have urged people to keep a safe distance from the sea.
