  1. Pupils climb 6ft fence to escape Thirsk schoolpublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Two young boys ran away from a North Yorkshire primary school by scaling a 6.5ft (2m) high fence and crossing a busy road, it's been revealed.

    The Thirsk Community Primary School pupils, aged four or five, were located quickly after a search was launched, the school has confirmed.

    They were found at their grandparents' house in Norby, but to get there they would have to had to cross the busy A61.

    Headteacher Richard Chandler told parents in a letter about the incident.

    In the letter, Mr Chandler says teachers discovered the boys were missing when classes lined up to go back into school.

    A search was then carried out and their parents were told.

    Mr Chandler says the school takes its responsibilities for pupil safety very seriously and supervision throughout the day has been reviewed.

    A North Yorkshire County Council investigation is also under way.

    Former Hull FC captain and Featherstone Rovers player Charlie Stone has died, it's been announced.

    Pontefract-born Stone played for seven years for the Black and Whites, having signed from Featherstone, and he was part of the 1978-79 "Invincibles" team.

    He won several trophies during his time with the club, including the 1982 Challenge Cup in Hull's replay win over Widnes.

    In a statement from Hull FC, external, the club says its thoughts are with his family and friends.

  3. Jobs boost as digital education firm heads for Sheffieldpublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Up to 200 new jobs could come to Sheffield, with a magazine and digital teaching company deciding to set up a base in the city.

    The company, formerly known as the Times Educational Supplement, which now it calls itself Tes Global, external, plans to be based at St Paul's Place.

    The jobs coming to Sheffield will cover finance, IT, data and analytics, customer services and sales account management roles.

    A huge celebration is due to be held in Leeds tonight to mark the start of this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

    The race gets under way tomorrow and lasts for four days, reaching every corner of the county.

    A 30-time Tour de France stage winner, Mark Cavendish is competing and will also be at tonight's Eve of Tour show in Millennium Square.

    He's making his return from injury after recovering from breaking ribs in two high-speed accidents in March.

    Tonight's event is due to start at 18:00 and entry is free.

    A badly injured pony has undergone pioneering surgery in North Yorkshire using fish skin.

    The pony, called Cinders, was found with severe burns and had been dumped in a yard in Chesterfield after a suspected acid attack.

    Cinders has since been operated on by a team at the Rainbow Equine Hospital in Malton, North Yorkshire.

    A vet, who travelled from California for the operation, applied fish skin to help Cinders' damaged tissue re-grow.

    Fish skin has been used on humans and other animals, but it's thought Cinders is the first horse to undergo such surgery.

    Fish skin is used because it is a good source of collagen and retains moisture well.

    The former Chancellor, George Osborne, will be among those giving evidence to the Education Select Committee later.

    He's expected to tell MPs that children in northern England should be given the same opportunities to attend good or outstanding schools as those in the South.

    Relationship charity Relate is calling for people with a "crippling" addiction to sex to receive help on the NHS.

    Figures obtained by the BBC show the number of qualified sex addiction therapists has doubled to 170 over the last five years.

    Rebecca Barker, from Tadcaster, started suffering sex addiction during a period of depression after giving birth to her third child.

    York City's future remains unclear, with a club statement saying no formal offers were made to buy the majority shareholding before Monday's deadline.

    Former chairman Jason McGill put the 75% of shares held by his company up for sale last month when the Supporters' Trust voted not to sell its 25% share to him.

    The statement says, external the club's Board of Directors has approached both parties to see what additional cash will be made available for the coming year as they look to put a budget together.

    The family of a woman from Bradford who was murdered by her partner are demanding to know how it was allowed to happen.

    Ataul Mustafa, 36, has been found guilty of killing Sobhia Khan at the home they shared in Derby.

    Mustafa killed Ms Khan, 37, less than two years after serving a hospital order for attacking his former partner.

  11. Multi-million pound Sheffield cemetery plan approvedpublished at 07:25 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Plans to improve Sheffield General Cemetery as part of a proposed £3.8m project have been approved.

    Sheffield City Council wants to carry out conservation and improvement work at the historic site in the Sharrow area of the city.

    It said the work is key to the cemetery coming off English Heritage's Heritage at Risk list.

    The scheme is subject to a Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People grant application being successful.

    York, Sheffield and Leeds have been named as some of the worst places in the country for air pollution.

    They're listed among 47 towns and cities in the UK where air pollution breaks limits set by the World Health Organisation.

    The place with the worst air pollution was Port Talbot in Wales.

    The WHO data shows 32 areas have fine particle air pollution levels above 10 micrograms per cubic metre, with the remaining 15 at that limit.

    Dirty air can cause debilitating diseases and hasten death.

    Relationship charity Relate is calling for people with a "crippling" addiction to sex to receive help on the NHS.

    Relate defines sexual addiction as any sexual activity that feels "out of control".

    The World Health Organisation is expected to approve the inclusion of "compulsive sexual behaviour disorder" in its International Classification of Diseases list in May 2019.

    Mother-of-three Rebecca Barker, 37, who's originally from North Yorkshire, said the compulsion took over her life in 2014 and ruined her relationship.

    "At its worst, even having sex five times a day wasn't enough," she says.

    Ms Barker had been diagnosed with depression in 2012 after the birth of her third child.

    She said it intensified during 2014 but she is now cured of both after splitting up with her partner, changing jobs and moving to France.
