  5. What next for the East Coast Main Line?published at 06:54 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

For the third time in just over a decade the government has called a halt to the East Coast Main Line rail franchise. So, what happens now?

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says it will be put in the hands of a public-private partnership at least until about 2020.

For two years the line will be state-run, by an operator of last resort, set up and overseen by the department of transport but involving private sector firms including engineering firm Arup.

Passengers and staff shouldn't see any disruption to day-to-day services, according to the transport secretary.

After 2020 the aim is that there will be much closer cooperation between state-owned Network Rail, which owns the track infrastructure, and whoever is operating the train service.

The East Coast Mainline, which is being renamed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), a brand resurrected from the 1940s, will then be run by a public-private partnership.

  16. East Coast Main Line: What you need to knowpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

Earlier today we told you the East Coast Main Line is being brought back under government control.

    East coastImage source, PA

Here's what we know about the move that Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said would provide the smoothest transition to a new operator.

    Why is it happening?

    • The London to Edinburgh line has been run by a joint venture between Stagecoach and Virgin, since 2015.
    • The companies paid £3.3bn to run the franchise until 2023, but it ran into financial trouble last year
    • In February it was announced that the franchise would end early,
    • Chris Grayling said the companies had "got their bid wrong", overestimating passenger numbers and revenues.

What do Virgin and Stagecoach blame it on?

    • They lay the fault of the failure at the door of Network Rail
    • The companies claim a lack of upgrades meant they couldn't run as many services.

    What happens now?

    • The service is being renamed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) a brand last used in the 1940s.
    • The government says bringing it back under state control will give time to find a new commercial owner
    • Virgin and Stagecoach will be allowed to bid for future rail franchises.
