    South Yorkshire's Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts says he's confident England fans travelling to Russia for the World Cup will be genuine supporters.

    Ticket sales are down when compared with previous tournaments and there has been speculation some fans have been put off going to Russia after violence in Marseille two years ago.

    England and Russia fans clashed before and after the Euro 2016 meeting between the two nations.

    Deputy Chief Constable Roberts, who's the National Lead for football policing, says measures taken in the UK will prevent troublemakers from travelling to this year's tournament:

    Sheffield's own Sean Bean has won his first ever Bafta.

    Bean claimed the Leading Actor gong at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony for his role in the BBC drama Broken in which he played a Catholic priest.

    He was presented with the trophy by Joely Richardson (pictured), who starred with him in Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1993.

    After the ceremony, Bean praised the scriptwriter of Broken, Jimmy McGovern, for creating the character of Father Michael Kerrigan:

    He was last seen walking towards McDonalds from the Jet petrol station at about 01:30 on Sunday morning.

    He walked with a distinctive limp, according to police, who say they are becoming increasingly concerned for his welfare.

    Firefighters have been in action after this van caught fire near Skipton:

    The cab of the van was completely destroyed in the blaze yesterday and fire crews had to use breathing apparatus as they tackled the fire above Carleton.

    The brother of World Cup heroes Bobby and Jack Charlton has lifted a trophy for England as part of the over-60s walking-football team.

    At 72, Tommy Charlton, from Rotherham, represented his country against Italy in the first ever international tournament at Brighton's Amex Stadium.

    England won the match, with left-footed Charlton having two good chances to score which were saved by the keeper.

    The game bans running and strong physical contact between players.

    Charlton was joined on the over-60s squad by Alan Kennedy, 63, winner of two European Cups with Liverpool.

    Science is being brought to pubs in Leeds.

    Over the next three days, the city is joining nearly 300 others across the world taking part in the global Pint of Science festival.

    The idea is for people to meet experts and discuss everything from neuro-science to cosmic rays over their favourite tipple.

    A Michelin-starred chef from North Yorkshire is among a group of top chefs who are setting sail from Filey later as part of a push to protect the town's historic fishing fleet.

    They're going out on the fishing trip with the North Yorkshire seaside town's last remaining fishermen who say they can prove the sustainability of their fishing methods.

    The chefs are backing a campaign against proposals to protect salmon stocks through a shorter fishing season, a move the fishermen say would put them out of business.

    Michelin star chef James Mackenzie - who's originally from Filey - is one of the local chefs supporting the campaign.

  13. Man badly hurt after crash outside Leeds pubpublished at 07:24 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    People who were out on Friday night are being asked to come forward if they saw a crash outside a Leeds pub which left a man badly hurt.

    The crash happened at about 23:00 on Selby Road in Halton Moor when an Audi S3 hit a Vauxhall Astra and a 54-year-old man who was on foot.

    The man was left with serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

    Police say the nearby Wykebeck Arms would have been full of people at the time and want anyone who saw the crash to come forward.

    They only went and did it: Harrogate Town have won promotion to the National League after winning their play-off final.

    Harrogate defeated Brackley 3-0 in the National League North final to reach the fifth tier for the first time in their history.

    Town finished second - five points above third-placed Brackley - in their regular-season table.

    Their victory saw Dominic Knowles score twice, with Joe Leesley also on target.

    Town manager Simon Weaver, said: "I didn't want to tempt fate at all, but felt that we could make a real good go of it this season."

    Accountants Moore Stephens says that there has been an 83% rise in the number of care home businesses entering insolvency, from 81 in 2016/17 to 148 in 2017/18.

    With many care home places being paid for by local authorities, the sector has been struggling since the government cut local authority funding.

    Mike Padgham, who runs two care homes in Scarborough, says it's a challenging time, and notes that it is important to remember the people behind the statistics.

    "For every home closure older people are forced to find a new home to live in at a time when they least expect it.. or least want it," he says.

    A spate of incidents across Sheffield where a man posed as a police officer to gain entry to homes has prompted a warning.

    On Friday, an 88-year-old's home in Gleadless was targeted, with the man telling the resident he needed to see how much cash he had in the house.

    Although he was persistent, the man left without entering the property.

    Six similar incidents have been reported in the city in the past two weeks, South Yorkshire Police said.
