    One of the last independent coffee houses in Leeds city centre closed it doors today after 40 years in the business.

    A stream of former customers came in to say goodbye to the owner of the Olympic, George Nicholaides.

    Past and present staff, including Debbie Preval and her son Darren (pictured above), also dropped in.

    The cafe opened in 1978 in New Market Street, near Kirkgate Market, offering two floors of dining. It soon developed a loyal following.

    George (pictured below), 69, has worked alongside his wife Eleni, 67, and their four children in the cafe as well as son-in-law Vass Petrou.

    The grandfather-of-five told me: "I'm retiring, I've been here 40 years and I think I've done enough.

    "The customers have all come in today and wished us a happy retirement. And all my old staff have been in today, wishing me good luck and everything."

    Rugby union club Doncaster Knights has submitted plans for a new development at its Castle Park ground, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The club, based on Armthorpe Road, havs put forward a proposed development to turn a grass pitch adjacent to the main playing area into a floodlit all-weather artificial pitch.

    The development will also include a 3m-high fence around the playing area and a "lightweight seated terrace" for 100 spectators, according to plans.

    Club officials want to use the pitch as a training facility which will be available to use throughout the year.

  7. 'Unprecedented' level of 999 calls prompts police appealpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 5 July 2018

    Police in North Yorkshire are appealing to people calling them to think before they dial as the number of 999 and 101 calls has reached "unprecedented levels".

    The force says the number of calls they received on one Sunday in June was equivalent to what they'd expect for New Year’s Eve.

    In June, 999 calls averaged 250 a day, a 4.25% increase on the same month last year.

    Officers say non-emergency calls are following the same pattern, with an average of 670 a day.

    The force has produced a series of animations showing when people should contact them:

  8. Five men charged over child sex abuse in Rotherhampublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 5 July 2018

    Five men have been charged with a total of 21 offences, including rape and indecent assault, as part of an investigation into abuse in Rotherham.

    Yasser Iqbal Hussain, 34, Shahid Hussain, 42, Azad Akram Raja, 34, all from Sheffield, and Faisel Hussain, 32, from Rotherham are charged with abusing two girls, who were under the age of 16 at the time, between 2001 and 2004.

    A man aged 35 from Masbrough in Rotherham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with the same offences.

    It's part of the National Crime Agency's (NCA) investigation into child sexual abuse and exploitation in Rotherham between 2001 and 2004.

    They are due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Thursday 2 August, according to the NCA.

  11. 'More pain' for drivers as Pool Bank work extendedpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 5 July 2018

    Drivers in part of West Yorkshire are being warned they face "a few weeks more pain" as work to repair a 100-year-old culvert under a busy road is set to go on longer than expected.

    The repair work being carried out under the A658 Pool Bank New Road at Pool-in-Wharfedale has already been going on for some time, but will now continue until the end of September.

    In the meantime, Leeds City Council says the road will continue to operate as a single-lane serving both directions, with temporary traffic lights and a 30mph speed limit.

    Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for transport at Leeds City Council, says the authority is "determined to do everything we can to get this work completed as soon as possible".

    In the meantime, the council's urging drivers using the road - which is one of the main routes to Leeds Bradford Airport - to allow extra time for their journeys.

    The Cliffhanger festival returns to Sheffield tomorrow in an event which will see the city centre transformed into an outdoor playground.

    The British Bouldering Championships, where the nation's strongest climbers battle it out on a bouldering wall in Devonshire Green, is also set to take place in the city over the weekend.

    The weekend will be "packed full of action and adventure", according to Sheffield City Council.

    The BBC will also broadcast the bouldering championships live on the BBC website on Sunday.

    The former leader of the English Defence League is to appeal against his 13-month prison sentence.

    Tommy Robinson, from Bedfordshire, admitted contempt of court after filming outside Leeds Crown Court during a trial in May.

    A judge told him his actions could have caused the ongoing trial to be re-run.

    The 35-year-old will attempt to have his sentence cut at the Court of Appeal in London later this month.

  18. Watch: RAF veteran gets back in the cockpitpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 5 July 2018

    An RAF veteran from Rotherham, who joined the air force in 1942, has been given the chance to fly in a World War Two plane once again.

    As the video above shows, John Watkins gets into the cockpit of the Tiger Moth aircraft, in a flight organised by a South Yorkshire Police sergeant.

    Sgt Simon Kirkham, who is ex-forces himself, met the 94-year-old on Armed Forces Day last week - with Mr Watkins telling him stories of him serving with the famous 617 Squadron.

    He then pulled a few favours to give Mr Watkins, whose nickname was "Snogger", a flight he won't forget.
