  6. Leeds streetlight LED plan gets 'blue light' from publicpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 5 July 2018

A public consultation over the future of street lighting in Leeds has shown support for a change to LED lights - despite a potential £25m cost.

    A street light.

Leeds City Council carried out the survey in a bid to cut its £4m-a-year electricity bill for its 92,000 street lights across the city.

Plans to convert 86,000 of those to energy-efficient LED "blue light" lanterns will now be put to the council's executive board in September.

It's estimated that if all existing street lights were converted it would save up to £2.5m every year, according to the council's Public Consultation Document.

There were more than 2,000 responses to proposals, including switching off some street lights between midnight and 05:30, with more than 70% of respondents supporting the LED option.

Richard Lewis, executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: "It is important to stress this is only a recommendation at this stage. The proposal will be fully considered and debated by the executive board in September."

Responding to fears over the safety of LED lights, Public Health England said there was only a risk of dazzle for drivers if the lights weren't installed correctly.
