  1. Man in hospital after being stabbed in the neck in Leedspublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 2 August 2018

    Police in Leeds say that a man was stabbed in the neck during a disturbance in the city this morning, four people have been arrested.

    As previously reported, it happened at 11:37 on Pleasant Avenue in Holbeck and officers say the disturbance involved about six people.

    Emergency services were called and the man was found "with a laceration to his neck", he is now in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

    Three women and one man have been arrested on suspicion of affray.

    This morning we've been reporting the deaths of four men, who died in a car crash during a police pursuit in Bradford.

    The crash happened at 05:30 this morning when a BMW was being followed by officers on Bingley Road before it crashed at the junction with Toller Lane.

    The crash has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who say: "This is a most tragic incident and our sympathies are with the family and friends of those who have died.

    "Our investigators are attending post incident procedures, have travelled to the scene and have begun gathering evidence."

  4. Pro-Stringfellow petition surges ahead of objectorspublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 2 August 2018

    More than 600 people have now signed a petition calling on Sheffield City Council to honour club tycoon Peter Stringfellow in the Walk of Fame outside the Town Hall, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Meanwhile a counter-petition opposing the call has achieved 258 signatures towards its 500-name target.

    Friends of the lapdance club owner want the honour in recognition of what the former General Technology College pupil did for the city's music scene in the 1960s and 70s.

    They launched the petition after the council said it cannot consider the request to include his name on the city's Walk of Fame because it can only include people who are still alive, so they can appear in person.

    But within days campaign group Not Buying it Sheffield launched its own petition opposing the call because he is "synonymous with the total glamorisation of the strip industry".

    A prisoner who used a broken bottle of aftershave to murder his "baby killer" cellmate has been jailed for life.

    Liam Deane, 22, from Wakefield, was found dead in his cell at HMP Leeds in the early hours of 12 November.

    He had been jailed for the murder of his two-day-old daughter last October.

    John Westland, 29 (pictured), who was serving a sentence for rape and grievous bodily harm, was convicted of Deane's murder after a trial at Leeds Crown Court and will serve a minimum of 19 years.

    Would-be welders at a Doncaster prison have used skills they've learned to create a piece of artwork for a Balby hospice.

    Inmates at the open prison in Hatfield have donated the metal work, which is made up of bulrushes and dragonflies, to St John’s Hospice for its new-look patient garden.

    The donation came after Paul Newbury, of Novus, the prison’s education provider, became aware of the garden project when his mother-in-law passed away in the hospice from cancer.

    Four people have died in a car crash during a police pursuit in Bradford.

    A BMW, with four men inside it, was being followed by officers on Bingley Road before it crashed at the junction with Toller Lane at 05:30.

    One local resident, who gave his name only as Zaff, told the BBC said he could hear loud sirens and "screeching followed by a loud bang" early this morning.

    He claimed the road is used as a race track and something had to be done about it.

    The crash has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

    The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says the notion that the south gets more investment in transport than the north is a "myth".

    Mr Grayling was visiting Leeds Bradford Airport today to formally open a multi-million pound redesigned departure lounge and improved car park.

    MPs from across Yorkshire have called for a £1bn investment in new transport schemes across the north of England.

    They've written to the chancellor, urging him to invest in transport in northern England after what they described as years of "underinvestment".

  9. Future of poet's house securedpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 2 August 2018

    The future of poet Ted Hughes' birthplace and childhood home in West Yorkshire has been secured after a new 125-year lease was granted, according to the trust that runs it.

    The terraced house at 1 Aspinall Street, Mytholmroyd is leased to The Elmet Trust by Calderdale Council.

    It has been used by the trust as a writer's retreat and holiday home for the past decade.

    Hughes was born in the house in 1930.

    He lived there until the age of seven, he served as poet laureate from 1984 until his death in 1998.

    Many of his poems draw on his lifelong love of the West Yorkshire valley, its landscape and people.

    A festival in October in Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge is to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death.

    It will also mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of his book The Iron Man.

  10. Man seriously injured after Leeds 'disturbance'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 2 August 2018

    A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a disturbance in Leeds this morning.

    The emergency services were called to an address on Pleasant Terrace in Holbeck at 11:37.

    Police officers and Yorkshire Ambulance Service attended and found the man with serious injuries.

    The road is still closed and West Yorkshire Police say its investigation is continuing.

    A woman whose body was discovered in a building in York a month ago, has been formally identified by North Yorkshire Police as 25-year-old Claire Lucas.

    Miss Lucas was found dead inside a property on Fourth Avenue in the Tang Hall area of the city on Monday 2 July, after officers gained entry following concerns for her welfare.

    Police began a murder investigation and a 35 year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after.

    He's since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

    Detectives say they are continuing to follow a number of lines of enquiry into Miss Lucas’ death and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

  13. Girl, 12, assaulted by gang on bikes in Yorkpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 2 August 2018

    A 12-year-old girl has been assaulted in York.

    Police believe six boys who were seen on bicycles are responsible for the incident in the Clifton Moor area of the city.

    It happened at about 21:00 on Monday evening, when the victim was walking alone.

    Officers say she was pushed to the ground and suffered injuries to her face, knee and stomach.

    Three of the boys are described as:

    • White male, approximately 18-years-old, about 5ft 10ins tall, muscular build, riding an old mountain bike
    • White male, 16-17-years-old, about 6ft in height, slim build, riding a new red racer bike
    • White male, about 16-years-old, about 5ft 8ins, riding an old rusty mountain bike with a neon yellow strip along the top frame.

    Police want anyone with any information about the incident to contact them.

    A South Yorkshire man accused of smuggling cannabis into Bali has appeared wearing a mask at a TV press conference.

    Zaid Thanoon, a photographer from Sheffield, was put in front of cameras with another man on Wednesday.

    He was arrested on 12 July, suspected of carrying three-and-a-half grams of cannabis into Indonesia.

    A second man who appeared, Victor Ortegarocha, from Chile, was allegedly caught with three grams of cannabis the following day.

    According to local media reports, external, Mr Thanoon admitted being a recreational cannabis user.

    Reports say the 26-year-old was arrested after he arrived from Thailand.

    A scam email threatening the reader with violence unless they pay money in a bank account has been sent to people in South Yorkshire, police have said.

    The first email says it's from a 'hitman' who claims he will cause violence to the email reader unless a quantity of Bitcoin is paid.

    Another email claims that malware has been installed on the computer and shows the recipient watching child pornography.

    South Yorkshire Police say a number of people in the region have received the emails, adding that if you do receive an email to delete it and don't respond.
