  1. What's driving 80% drop in Leeds council staff assaults?published at 07:44 British Summer Time 8 August 2018

A drop in the number of assaults on council workers in Leeds may sound like good news - but it may actually point to a bigger problem, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Leeds civic hall

A Freedom of Information request showed that the number of attacks on Leeds City Council workers fell dramatically, from 525 in 2014-15 to just 98 in 2017-18 - a drop of more than 80%.

However, unions say they are worried some staff aren't reporting assaults as they are unhappy with how they are dealt with by the council and feel there is "no point".

Councillor James Lewis says: "Changes in practice, improvements in training and awareness for staff has all helped to reduce numbers of assaults."

Maybe the outcomes of reporting it is not satisfactory, so people think, 'What's the point in reporting it?'

Proposals have been drawn up by Barnsley Council to build a new gyratory system on Penny Pie Park in a bid to relieve congestion along Dodworth Road and Pogmore Road.

The council hopes to cut journey times between the town and the M1 by up to 10 minutes, but it will mean building over a playground and the possible loss of dozens of trees.

Tim Turner, from the Penny Pie Community Group, says people won't come to the park if it means crossing two busy roads.

"We've half-a-dozen kids playing in the football area. That's going to be moved. We've got a lovely play area where we get all the nursery people. That's going to be moving," he says.

"People are not going to cross over two busy roads to go and play. It just doesn't make sense," he adds.
