  4. Starlings on Prozac are focus for York researchpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 7 August 2018

Scientists in York researching bird courtship say they've discovered that males are less inclined to court female birds if they've been exposed to anti-depressants.

    Starlings

The researchers studied the birds at sewage works, where birds flock to feed all year round, and found worms, maggots and flies contain many different pharmaceuticals, including Prozac.

With 64.7m prescriptions written for anti-depressant drugs in 2016, traces of them are present in the water system.

Dr Kathryn Arnold and Sophia Whitlock, from the University of York, studied the effects of Fluoxetine (commonly known as Prozac) on starlings and say they discovered changes in the birds' behaviour which could put birds at risk in the wild.

Sophia Whitlock said: "Males sang more than twice as often and as long to untreated females compared to females that had been receiving low doses of Prozac."
