    Sir Norman, who went on to become chief constable of both Merseyside Police and West Yorkshire Police, was accused of telling lies about the "culpability of fans" and his role in the wake of the tragedy, in which 96 Liverpool fans died.

    Five others, including match commander David Duckenfield who is accused of manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 fans, are due to face trial next year.

    For legal reasons, Mr Duckenfield could not be charged over the death of the 96th victim, Tony Bland, as he died four years after the disaster on 15 April 1989 before Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium.

    Female football fans will be able to get free sanitary productions in the toilets at Barnsley FC, with the club saying it doesn't believe women should pay for essentials.

    Encouraged by campaigners from the group On The Ball, whose membes are pushing football clubs to offer the products at every ground, the sign tells people to take the products if needed.

    Hazel, who took the photo on a visit to Oakwell on Saturday, praised the club and campaign group for their work.

    On The Ball was set up by three friends who wanted to get their club, Celtic, to offer the provision. Now, they hope others will follow Celtic and Barnsley's example.

    A group of allotment holders in Kirklees say they could take legal action if they lose their plots to a new primary school.

    Kirklees Council is set to decide whether Cemetery Road allotment holders will be moved to new plots to make way for a playing field and car park at the new Brambles Primary Academy.

    More than 5,000 people have signed a petition to save the Birkby site, which has been used as allotments for more than 80 years.

    Signatories include the former BBC Gardeners' World presenter Toby Buckland.

  4. Multi-million pound flood defence plans for Hullpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Plans to improve flood defences along the River Humber which are expected to cost about £42m to complete have been put forward.

    The scheme would help protect 113,000 homes and businesses in Hull and East Yorkshire which are at risk from tidal flooding, according to the Environment Agency.

    Defences would be improved at nine sites including Victoria Dock, St Andrew's Quay and Albert Dock.

    If approved by Hull City Council, the work is expected to start later this year.

    A North Yorkshire restaurant has translated its menu into Mandarin and Cantonese to cope with an influx of Chinese customers.

    Scotts Fish and Chips, on the A64 at Bilbrough Top, says it's seen a large increase in the number of Chinese coach parties stopping off for a bite to eat.

    It's thought the Chinese passion for the chippy began when Chinese Premier Xi Jinping was treated to fish and chips by then British Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015.

    Now, thanks to launching a Chinese website and the use of a messaging app widely used in East Asia, Scotts has seen an explosion of Chinese coach parties stopping off for some fish and chips or, if you're proficient in Mandarin, Yu he shu tiaoa.

    The clever marketing technique seems to have worked, because staff there say they've seen a 15-fold increase in the number of Chinese coach parties stopping off this year.

    Manager Roxana Vasai says: "This week alone we've served more than 100 Chinese tourists in three separate groups."

    Motorists are to be banned from leaving their car engines running outside 20 Sheffield schools in a bid to protect children from pollution, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The "anti-idling" zones are being introduced outside the nursery, infant and junior schools as part of Sheffield City Council's Clean Air Strategy.

    If enforcement officers catch motorists parked with their engines running, they will receive a warning and could be fined.

    The schools in the first phase have been chosen because they have the poorest air quality, according to the council.

    They are Lowfield, Oasis Don Valley, Hillsborough, Tinsley Meadows, Springfield, Nether Green, Woodseats, Manor Lodge, Brightside, Limpsfield, Byron Wood, Holt House, Carterknowle, Whiteways, Netherthorpe, Nether Edge, Anns Grove, Dobcroft, Meersbrook Bank, Wincobank, Concord, Owler Brook and Oasis Fir Vale.

  7. Driver 'shaken' by bonnet smashing windscreen at 70mphpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    A driver's been left "shaken and covered in glass" after the bonnet of his car flew open at 70mph and smashed his windscreen on the M62 in West Yorkshire.

    It happened near Cleckheaton Golf Club at junction 26 of the motorway in the early hours of this morning.

    Campaigners trying to block plans to build a major traffic island on a park in Barnsley have presented their concerns to councillors.

    Plans have been drawn up to try to relieve congestion around roads in Dodworth and Pogmoor heading towards the M1.

    It involves building a new gyratory on Penny Pie Park, with campaigners saying it will cut the park in half.

    More than 1,300 people have signed a petition against the plans.

    A consultation on the plans is running until 7 September, according to Barnsley Council.

    York is Britain's most popular city, according to a new poll from market research company YouGov, external.

    Of the 55,000 people surveyed, 92% - that's 50,600 - said they like the historic walled city best.

    The city, founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD, tops the list of 57 British cities, with Bath and Edinburgh placed second and third.

    Not such good news for Bradford, though, which only 23% of respondents said they liked, according to the new poll.

    A shop in Leeds which has already been hit twice by thieves in less than a year has been targeted again by ram-raiders.

    Thieves reversed through the window of Flannels, on Vicar Lane, at about 21:00 last night and stole goods from the display.

    A bus driver tried to block their escape in what's thought to be a black BMW, but failed to stop them.

    Police are appealing for anyone who may have filmed the theft on their phones, or knows anything about the incident, to get in touch.

    People living in Doncaster say they need help to rid their town of on-street drug-taking.

    Local residents and business owners say the use of the drug "Spice" is putting shoppers off from visiting.

    The drug is a form of synthetic cannabis, which appears to freeze those who smoke it, leaving them in a "zombie"-like state.

    This was the moment ram-raiders hit Leeds designer clothing shop Flannels for the third time in just eight months last night.

    Thieves reversed a vehicle into the store at about 21:00 on Monday night before stealing items from the display and making off in what's believed to be a black BMW.

  16. The beats go on: Go-ahead for controversial music festivalpublished at 06:53 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    A dance music festival has given the go-ahead for a new venue in North Yorkshire, despite claims people attending the same event last year used people's gardens as toilets.

    Mint, which was previously held at Stockeld Park, near Wetherby, will be staged at the former RAF Church Fenton, near Tadcaster, next month.

    Organisers surrendered the previous licence after a North Yorkshire Police and Harrogate Borough Council review.

    Jim Walton, who lives in Spofforth, near the site of last year's festival, said: "Hundreds of people left the site on foot with some urinating and defecating in people's gardens."

    Church Fenton parish councillor Jo Mason said: "Church Fenton's roads are smaller and narrower than round Stockeld Park, yet even more festival-goers are expected."

    Mint organisers said they were "working closely with all relevant responsible authorities to ensure this year's Mint festival is another safe and enjoyable event".

    Selby District Council said it was satisfied organisers had drawn up a detailed event safety plan.

  18. Leeds clothes shop targeted by ram-raiders for third timepublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    A designer clothing shop in the centre of Leeds has been targeted by ram-raiders for the third time in eight months - despite the efforts of a bus driver to stop them.

    Thieves reversed into the shop front of Flannels, on Vicar Lane, at about 21:00 last night before its occupants stole goods from the display.

    It's believed a bus driver tried to slow the thieves down by blocking their exit in a black BMW, but they still managed to make their getaway.

    Police are appealing for anyone who may have filmed the theft on their phones to get in touch.

    The shop was last hit by thieves in June, and before that it was targeted in a ram-raid on 30 December 2017 which was caught on camera.
