    People in Hull have welcomed plans to improve flood defences on the Humber.

    The Environment Agency (EA) has submitted plans to spend £42 million on new defences to protect 113,000 homes and businesses.

    One resident told the BBC: "It's the right thing to do, because if you live in this area and you know the surge of the tide can be quite high, you're always nervous about your house being flooded."

    If the plans are approved, the EA says the works would be completed by the end of 2020.

    A £16,800 project hopes to restore a memorial garden to Captain Cook in North Yorkshire.

    The garden in Great Ayton hopes to open to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the explorer landing in New Zealand in May next year.

    The garden is close to the centre of the village and is the location of the Cook family cottage, which was painstakingly moved to Australia in 1934.

    It is marked by an obelisk in the garden, which the parish council says has recently deteriorated.

    A new footpath will be added, the obelisk repaired and the cottage layout will be shown.

    Two women from Hull, who are both in their 70s, will represent England at bowls after winning a major competition at the weekend.

    Di Jones and Sue Cotton from Kingston Bowling Club were winners in the women's pairs category at the National Bowls Championships in Leamington Spa on Saturday.

    It means they now qualify to take part in the British Isles Championships.

    If they win that, then they could qualify to represent England at the Commonwealth Games.

    Wool I never. A sheep stolen in the Peak District yesterday has been found in Sheffield, police have said.

    Derbyshire Rural Crime Team said someone witnessed the sheep being stolen from the banks of Ladybower Resevoir.

    In a Facebook post, they said "thanks to the power of social media" the animal was found in Wincobank several hours later and safely returned to its owner's field.

    No-one has been arrested but inquires are ongoing, Derbyshire Police said.

    A prominent bridge in Scarborough is to get a lick of paint.

    Spa Bridge will have its damaged paint removed and new paint coatings will be applied to protect its structure.

    The bridge, which was opened in 1827, gives easy access to Scarborough Spa.

    It will remain open to pedestrians throughout the work, which will begin in September.

    CCTV footage showing a shirtless man fighting inside a Sheffield nightclub has been released by police.

    The 29-year-old man, Torrington Smith, is seen wearing a Santa hat and kicking and stamping on a man on the floor before punching another man.

    Four men were stabbed during the early-morning attack at the Niche nightclub on Walker Street last year.

    Smith, 29, and three other men, Roemol Taylor, 20, Negus Nelson, 29, Leyton Orr, 26, all from Sheffield, admitted violent disorder and were jailed at Sheffield Crown Court earlier today.

    Bradford-based supermarket Morrisons has regained its position as the fastest-growing of the big four supermarkets, new figures show.

    Their growth is up 2.7%, gaining 231,000 new shoppers.

    Asda saw growth of 2.6%, while Tesco increased total sales by 1.8% and Sainsbury's was up 1.2%.

    The figures from Kantar Worldpanel also show Britons spent an extra £67 million on alcoholic drinks in July - possibly due to the unusually hot summer weather.

  12. Ripon sinkhole: Survey says area 'susceptible to holes'published at 15:37 British Summer Time 21 August 2018

    Earlier we told you about a sinkhole which has appeared causing a supermarket in Ripon in North Yorkshire to be evacuated.

    The area is well-known for sinkholes and in recent years quite dramatic ones have appeared.

    In November 2016, a dozen properties were evacuated in Magdalen's Road, when a hole measuring about 20m (66ft) by 10m (33ft) and 9m (30ft) deep (pictured below) opened up behind a terrace of houses.

    Two years earlier, only 400 yards away in Magdalen's Close, a house had to be demolished after a sinkhole formed.

    After the 2014 event, the British Geological Survey said gypsum under the town had dissolved to form "a maze-like cave system."

    It said in a report that sinkholes appeared in Ripon every two or three years in the 1980s and 1990s, but there had not been any reported in the seven years before the 2014 event.

    The family of a six-year-old boy, who died after being shot with a pellet gun, have paid tribute to a "loving, caring and beautiful boy."

    Stanley Metcalf died in hospital after the incident at a house in Sproatley, near Hull, on 26 July.

    His family has issued a statement ahead of his funeral tomorrow.

    It says: "We are absolutely devastated and completely heartbroken without Stanley and it still doesn't feel real we won't see his happy, smiling face again.

    "There are no real words to express how the loss of Stanley has affected us and we all miss him so much."

    The family have asked that the funeral remains a private one.

    “We would please ask that our wishes of privacy are respected and his day remains about him, with those attending who knew Stanley being allowed to mourn alongside us without any intrusion."

    Humberside Police say the investigation in to the death is ongoing.

    No arrests have been made.

    Rescue teams have spent four hours recovering a man who fell on a mountain bike route in Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire.

    Thirteen members of the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team attended to the man who suffered injuries to his shoulder and chest and has suspected spinal injuries.

    He had to be carried out of the forest in a vacuum mattress on a stretcher, before being transferred to a waiting ambulance.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct's Deputy Director General Ian Todd said:

    “We acknowledge the CPS decision to discontinue criminal proceedings against Norman Bettison.

    "We know many people will be affected by today’s news, particularly the Hillsborough families.

    "Our focus is to support the CPS with the forthcoming trials for the remaining defendants, and to complete our investigations into police conduct following the Hillsborough disaster.

    "We ask that people avoid making any online comments that could prejudice those trials.”

    A referendum is due to be held in part of Hull next month, but some people say they are not sure what they are voting on.

    About 4,000 residents in the Great Thornton area are being asked to vote on whether or not they want to adopt a new Neighbourhood Plan, which would give people a say on how the area is developed in the future.

    However, some residents say they don't understand the plan and want the date of the vote to be postponed.

    The Goodwin Development Trust, which is behind the referendum plans, has so far not responded to our requests for a comment.

    The vote is due to take place on Thursday 6 September.

    Bradford Council has spent over £23,000 in the past three years providing a BMW to take the Lord Mayor to public engagements, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The council does not own the BMW 730d, similar to the one pictured, and it was leased out at a cost of £10,871 from March 2015 to April 2018.

    The taxpayer also had to pay £6,852 in fuel and £5,496 in maintenance costs for the car in that period. The car is valued at about £63,040.

    John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "Every penny wasted on excessive travel expenses is money that could be going towards social care or bin collections."

    But responding, Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: "It's the kind of petty council-bashing we have come to expect from the TaxPayers' Alliance who are in denial about the escalating demand on adult and children's social care at a time when the government are taking away all grant funding for local councils."

    Historic stone removed from York Minster during conservation work is being auctioned off to raise funds for maintenance work.
