  1. Huge dam built to protect East Yorkshire townpublished at 08:18

Work on a £4.7m flood defence to protect homes in East Yorkshire gets under way today.

    Pocklington floods

Pocklington has suffered flooding several times in recent years.

In 2007, 2012 and 2015 shops and homes were under 1ft (30cm) of water after the town's beck burst its banks.

The beck collects rainwater run off from an area upstream in the wolds, which then results in flood water flowing in to the town.

Work is due to start today on an earth-based 600 metre long dam structure to the north east of the town, which will create a water storage reservoir upstream.

When it's finished next year it will hold back enough water to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools - that's about 90,000 cubic metres of water.

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman ruled Anna Hemmings, who was 26 and had spina bifida, wasn't treated quickly enough for the infection in 2015 and died as a result.

The report also says the hospital failed to monitor Anna's condition and ensure she was given enough fluids.

This meant the correct antibiotic wasn't administered until 15 hours after she had been admitted.

By that point, it was too late and she suffered a heart attack and died.

Following the Ombudsman’s investigation, the health trust wrote to Anna's mother, Katie Hemmings, to acknowledge and formally apologise for the failings in her daughter’s treatment.

Mrs Hemmings says she'll now campaign to prevent more people from dying.

  18. Humber Bridge could be renamed to raise moneypublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 12 September 2018

The Humber Bridge could be renamed or sponsored as the Bridge Board considers proposals to try and boost finances in the next three years.

    Humber Bridge

The measures are on a list of "potential commercial options" published by the Bridge Board in a strategic plan.

As well as minimising spending, the document reveals that the board wants to "develop new income streams".

This also includes an option to introduce car park charges, parking at the bridge car park has always been free.

    Quote Message

In such a plan it is normal to consider the different ways available to the board to maximise revenue, enabling the bridge to be maintained to a high standard, while at the same time keeping the tolls low. Several ways of achieving this have been put forward including introducing car parking fees. However, there are currently no firm plans to do this, nor is it something we will be considering in the near future.”
