  1. Hull's 2017 UK City of Culture named 'Best Arts Project'published at 11:16 British Summer Time 12 September 2018

    Hull's year as UK City of Culture has been voted Best Arts Project in the National Lottery awards.

    Former Doctor Who actor Christopher Ecclestone broke the news to the team behind the city's year-long series of events and to "blue coat" volunteers today.

    Mr Ecclestone said the City of Culture had been "an overwhelming success".

    The National Lottery said the city's programme attracted 5.3m people to more than 2,800 events, cultural activities, installations and exhibitions.

    South Yorkshire Police have launched a new initiative to tackle knife crime in Sheffield.

    Their approach will involve more officers out in the community, a focus on education and also enforcement.

    There was a big debate about the issue in the Sheffield Winter Garden earlier this week.

    Speaking at the event, Lynne Hamblett, whose grandson Jordan Thomas was murdered four years ago, said: "It's no good just speaking about it, you have to be proactive.

    "It doesn't matter if it's guns, knives (or) whatever, there's too many young people dying."

    Rescue services, including firefighters and the Coastguard came together on the east coast last night to recreate a dramatic sea wall exercise.

    Scientists will be at the Deep aquarium in Hull today to measure what impact watching fish has on the brain and heart.

    The team from the University of York are exploring whether marine life can have beneficial effects on health and our general well-being as part of the British Science Festival, external, which is taking place in the city this week.

    The experiment starts this morning and visitors to the aquarium can take part by getting hooked up to heart rate monitors.

    A Sheffield nightclub plans to reopen tonight after an 18-year-old man was stabbed in the venue at the weekend.

    Corporation nightclub on Milton Street in Sheffield closed early on Sunday morning after the incident, which left the victim in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

    A review of the premises took place and the owners of the nightclub agreed to put new conditions in place surrounding their search policy as well as extra training of staff.

    Staff were praised by police for a positive and swift response to the incident.

    A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

    A motorbike rider has died in Leeds after his bike collided with a car despite efforts from members of the public to save his life.

    It happened last night just before 20:30 on Tong Road, Wortley, at the junction with Albany Street.

    The car, a Ford Mondeo, had been turning right out of Albany Street (pictured) and the motorbike was travelling along Tong Road towards Leeds city centre, according to police.

    The rider of the motorbike, a 42-year-old man, was seriously injured and despite the efforts of members of the public who came to his assistance and ambulance staff on the scene, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

    Officers would like to hear from anyone who saw either vehicle before the collision or witnessed the collision itself.

    Dinner ladies at Ladywood Primary School in Grimethorpe are on strike this morning over plans to make all nine of them redundant.

    Today is the first of six days of strike action this month, which came after the school announced plans in June to scrap the dinner ladies.

    The idea is that they will be replaced with existing teaching assistants - who would supervise 200 children at lunchtime.

    The BBC has asked Ladywood Primary School for comment.

  9. Hull MP questions possible A63 street light switch offpublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 12 September 2018

    A proposal to turn off street lights on part of the A63 in Hull could be raised in Parliament.

    Highways England is considering switching off the lights between Daltry Street in Hull and Welton in East Yorkshire, as part of work to improve safety barriers.

    Highways England says it wants to trial the switch off, but won't go ahead with it if it has a detrimental impact on safety.

    A man was taken to hospital with minor gunshot wounds following what police said was a "targeted" incident in Sharrow in Sheffield.

    Police were called to the Wolstenholm Road area just after midnight this morning.

    A man believed to be in his 30s has been treated in hospital.

    Officers say the investigation is in its early stages and want anyone with information to get in touch.

    Police have issued an urgent appeal to find a man from Selby who is wanted for recall to prison.

    Markham Ward, 45, from Cawood, was released from prison on licence in May 2018 after serving part of a 23-month sentence for affray and witness intimidation.

    Officers say he's since breached the terms of his licence and is now wanted for recall to prison.

    They're appealing to anyone who has seen Markham or knows where he is now to contact them.

    Police have closed a Sheffield road as they deal with an incident in the city this morning.

    The road closure is in place at Wostenholm Road from Sharrow Lane to Priory Place.

    The cordon was put in place at about 04:00.

    A convent church in Leeds has been named as one of a list of ten endangered buildings.

    The Victorian Society's annual list aims to expose the plight of Victorian and Edwardian buildings at risk.

    Among the list of 10 buildings is the Grade II St Mary's Convent Church, built in 1852.

    The church lies in a disused plot of land next to a high school just outside central Leeds.

    Closed for almost 30 years, the society said urban explorer photographs had revealed "very dilapidated" interiors.

    The society said: "Such a beautiful building in a prominent location deserves much more than being left to rot."

    The Princess Royal will officially open a new rail freight terminal in Doncaster today.

    The 30-acre iPort rail freight facility is the first inland terminal of it's kind to opened in the UK for more than a decade.

    It will be able to accommodate the UK’s longest trains up to six times a day.

    The site next to the M18 connects to the East Coast mainline close to Doncaster Sheffield Airport

    It's hoped it will create at least 5,000 new jobs in the region.

    A woman left in constant and severe pain after a controversial medical procedure is urging others to speak out as a government review panel comes to Leeds today.

    Jackie Cheetham, from Pickering in North Yorkshire, lost her job and her home and says she made several suicide attempts after having a vaginal mesh fitted.

    She's one of more than 100,000 women in the UK who have had a mesh implant, but hundreds are now taking legal action against the makers of the mesh, and the NHS, because they've been left in permanent pain.

    The net-like fabric can be attached into the wall of the vagina to act as a scaffold to support organs, such as the bladder, to keep them in the right place to help manage incontinence or another condition called prolapse.

    The use of the mesh implants was suspended last month.

    The government now wants to hear from anyone who has experienced complications.

    Leading children's charity NSPCC says the case of a North Yorkshire teacher jailed for using the internet to manipulate people around the world into abusing children highlights the need for a social media regulator.

    Richard Clark from Thirsk used fake social media accounts to befriend children and get them to send him indecent images of themselves.

    The 29-year-old also convinced people to send images and recordings of their own relatives being abused.

    The school teacher also kept a record of his victims, categorising them based on their appearance, size of their genitalia and ways he had abused them.

    Clark admitted 26 charges and was jailed for 12 years.

    An investigation is due to begin into the discovery of human remains discovered during excavation work in the centre of Leeds.

    The site where the remains were found, at Playhouse Square, had previously been a church burial ground.

    Police were called there at about midday yesterday and will be carrying out tests to establish the age of the remains.

    The excavation work is taking place as part of a revamp of Leeds Playhouse theatre, which will have a new entrance and new studio space.

    The Environment Agency say flooding is expected, so immediate action is required.

    The warning's been issued because particularly high tides are expected between 06:30 and 07:30.

    The Environment Agency says it will monitor the situation and is asking people to stay aware of surroundings and not to put themselves at risk.
