    One of West Yorkshire's pro-Brexit MPs is refusing to support new calls to keep the UK closely linked to the EU if there's no deal.

    Andrea Jenkyns is on the Commons Brexit Committee - it is recommending the government maintains close ties with Brussels if Theresa May's preferred deal is rejected.

    The group says a fallback is needed to avoid a "chaotic and damaging" no-deal Brexit.

    The Morley and Outwood MP, along with Jacob Rees-Mogg and Sammy Wilson, refused to endorse the proposals.

    Kirklees Council is claiming next month's bin strike is off because the union failed to follow the proper rules.

    It says Unison doesn't have the required permission to hold the stoppage and in the meantime it's continuing to address workers' concerns.

    It is part of a dispute in Kirklees over claims some workers have been refused leave to help dying relatives or sick children.

    A North Yorkshire fraudster has been ordered to pay back more than £1m, which police say was generated by his crimes.

    Paul Blanchard Sr, 73, of St Oswald’s Court, Fulford, York, was sentenced in February 2008 to six-and-a-half years’ imprisonment.

    He was found guilty of possessing criminal property, obtaining a money transfer by deception, conspiracy to obtain a money transfer by deception and conspiracy to conceal, disguise, convert or transfer criminal property.

    Police triggered confiscation proceedings to try and get back about £4.3m he obtained fraudulently.

    Blanchard was told at Teeside Crown Court on Monday that he must pay £1,026,887.45.

    If he doesn't pay within three months, he will be returned to prison for a further five years.

    Two properties and a high-value number plate are among the items expected to be sold.

    An 83-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with murdering an 85-year-old man.

    Marjorie Grayson is accused of killing Alan Grayson at a house in Orgreave Lane in Sheffield on Thursday morning.

    He was found stabbed and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    South Yorkshire Police has not released details about the pair's relationship to each other.

    Ms Grayson is next due in court on 16 November for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

  7. Cyclists complete Leeds-London charity bike ridepublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Two cyclists who were riding from Leeds to London have completed their journey.

    Amateur cyclists Keiron Gavaghan and Lee Boocock took part alongside 11 fellow riders.

    They completed the 245-mile trip yesterday in just under 24 hours.

    So far, they’ve raised £11,000 for the Great North Ambulance Service and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

    A pigeon has been found with a crossbow arrow through its body in Scarborough.

    The bird was found on a doorstep in Cross Street on Saturday, according to the RSPCA.

    Another arrow was found without its tip nearby.

    Insp Laura Barber, from the RSPCA, said: "It's shocking someone would do something so cruel, deliberately causing so much suffering."

    She added: "There was no other option than to put the bird straight to sleep."

    Uber drivers in Leeds have been protesting outside the company's offices in Leeds today.

    The drivers say Uber is putting their livelihoods at risk - by allowing cars from across Yorkshire to operate in the city.

    A spokesperson from the company said: "we recently made a change which means that drivers can only use our app within the region they are licensed in."

    "Our door is always open for drivers to speak to us about any issues they're having."

    A monster pumpkin, grown in Gloucestershire, has taken first prize at a giant vegetable competition at Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

    The vast 50 stone (319.8kg) specimen, grown by Graham Barrat from Gloucester, won the heaviest pumpkin class at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show. It was more than 77kg ahead of the runner up.

    But according to the Guinness World Records , externalhe still has a long way to beat the heaviest pumpkin ever, which weighed 1,190.49 kg (2,624.6 lb) and was grown by the Belgian Mathias Willemijns in October 2016.

    Organisers said there had been a record number of entries this year, despite the "beast from the east and blistering summer temperatures".

    The site, at Fletcher Plant Ltd in Darnall, was well ablaze over the weekend, with smoke being seen for miles around Sheffield.

    The leader of Wakefield Council has narrowly survived a vote of no confidence by the local Labour Party Group, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    There have been calls for Peter Box to resign after an Ofsted report this summer revealed "serious and widespread" failings across Wakefield's Children's Services.

    Labour said it could not confirm the exact number of votes cast on either side of the motion.

    A commissioner is now deciding whether the government should take control of the department.

    Plans to protect the busiest parts of York city centre from the threat of terrorist attacks are going set to be considered over the next fortnight.

    It's after City of York Council commissioned security experts to develop a plan to combat the ongoing threat of what they call "vehicle weapon attacks."

    At the end of last year, 12 concrete blocks were positioned in front of York Minster.

    Former Bradford City defender Stephen Darby has announced his retirement from football, aged 29, after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

    The full-back last played in December for Bolton, he made more than 200 appearances for Bradford City before joining the Lancashire side in July 2017

    "I would like to ask for privacy at this time so I can adjust to the battle I have ahead and that I can spend time with those closest to me," he said.

    Darby, married to Manchester City Women and England international Steph Houghton, began his career at Liverpool after coming through the academy.

    Two people, who were involved in the death of a 22-year-old Sheffield Hallam student, have pleaded guilty to supplying class A drugs.

    Joana Burns, a maths student, took MDMA for a "final fling" to mark the end of university.

    Katherine Lavin, 21, from Stockport, admitted supplying MDMA to the Sheffield student who died after taking it during a night out in 2017.

    Benjamin Williams, 25, from Sheffield, supplied the same drug to Lavin.

    A South Yorkshire Police report found Ms Burns and her friends paid £7 each for the drug, commonly known as ecstasy.
