    Three men have been arrested after a shooting in Huddersfield at the weekend.

    An 18-year-old was left with non-life threatening injuries after the attack on Sunday in Hammond Street.

    The three men, all aged 18 and from the town, were taken into custody in the early hours of this morning.

    They are still being questioned by officers.

  3. Uber drivers to protest at Leeds officepublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Uber drivers in Leeds are protesting outside the company's office in the city over pay, drivers coming in from elsewhere and the vetting of those drivers.

    More than 100 drivers are expected to take part.

    Some have accused the city council of not doing enough to protect them from drivers coming in from other areas.

    They also say they have "growing concerns" over the practices of the company in Leeds.

    In a statement, the drivers say any Uber driver from Yorkshire can operate in the city.

    They also claim those licenced to operate in Leeds are now outnumbered by those who don't have a licence in Leeds.

  6. Man's death 'unexplained' after body found in Ousepublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    A man's body has been recovered from the river Ouse in Selby.

    Athough formal identification has not yet taken place, police believe the man is Antony Hargreaves, 53, from Barlby.

    The man's body was found at about 13:50 on Monday and his death is being treated as unexplained, say police.

    Mr Hargreaves was reported missing to North Yorkshire Police earlier this month.

    In a statement, the force says: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Hargreaves at this sad time."

    Sheffield is "a safe place to live", despite a recent spate of stabbings and shootings in the city, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Home Office figures show people in Sheffield are more likely to carry a knife than anywhere else in Yorkshire.

    Det Supt Una Jennings says those figures need to be put into context, adding it's not necessarily that more people are carrying knives, but police officers are better at finding them.

    She says: "If we have a conversion rate of all the people we stop and search and we find that 30% are carrying weapons, then clearly we're stopping the right people."

  10. Marine mums' seafaring success inspires Yorkshire sailorspublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    A team of four men from Yorkshire are preparing to compete in a race across the Atlantic, hoping to replicate the seafaring success of a team of York mums.

    Three members of the Row 4 Victory team are servicemen and they're raising money for military charities to mark 100 years since the end of World War One.

    They're due to start the challenge in December in La Gomera in the Canaries and plan to row 3,000 miles to English Harbour in Antigua.

    They say they've been inspired by the four North Yorkshire women (pictured below) who rowed the Atlantic in 2016, becoming the oldest all-female crew to complete the challenge.

    The women rowers, who became friends after taking up rowing at a club in York, encountered a hurricane, power failures and seasickness en-route.

    They also had to row naked after running out of clean clothes during the crossing.

    Firefighters have been dealing with a barn fire in Doncaster overnight.

    Firefighters are still dealing with the blaze this morning.

    The cause of the fire isn't yet known, according to South Yorkshire Fire Service.

    A major overhaul is being called for into how people in Leeds, particularly in the poorest areas, are encouraged to get active amid fears too many people in the city are unfit.

    Officials in the city say the current system isn't working, external, so talks are taking place about how to get people to exercise more.

    A group of councillors are to look at ways Active Leeds, which runs leisure centres in the city, could encourage more people to exercise, even if it's just getting off the bus a stop earlier.

  17. Thirty-nine crime gangs identified in North Yorkshirepublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 18 September 2018

    Thirty-nine organised crime groups are currently working in North Yorkshire, with over half of their activity focused on drugs, a new report suggests.

    The report is by the county's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), external into "county lines", a term referring to the phone lines used by gangs to sell drugs in small towns using vulnerable children.

    The National Crime Agency, external defines a typical "county lines" scenario as a network between an urban hub and a county location into which drugs, primarily heroin and crack cocaine, are supplied.

    The PCC's report says there are nine such operations currently active in North Yorkshire, including four in Scarborough and three in York. All are currently under investigation.

    The report will be discussed at a Police and Crime Panel meeting on Thursday.

    Sheffield City Council has launched a campaign against smoking shisha after successfully prosecuting a number of bars across the city, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Since June 2018, the council has issued £15,000 worth of fines to shisha bars across Sheffield for breaking a ban on smoking indoors.

    The authority now wants to take further action by starting a campaign called "Think It's Safe?" through which it hopes to target young men in particular through social media and leafleting.

    Greg Fell, director of public health in Sheffield, said there are many misconceptions about shisha.

    "Some people thinking that it's safer to smoke than traditional cigarettes," says Mr Fell.

    The World Health Organisation said smoking shisha, also known as hookah, for one hour is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes, Mr Fell added.
