    Emergency services are telling drivers to "avoid the area if possible" after a tree came down in Hull blocking a road.

    Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said the tree had come down near the police station on Hessle High Road.

    Gary Hobson, who was cycling home at the time, took a photograph of the tree which said had been knocked over by a "stiff breeze".

    The emergency services are currently on the scene in Thorton-in-Craven after the silver car crashed into the tree.

    The accident happened on the A56 between Broughton and Thorton-in-Craven on a day when a weather warning is in place for much of the UK.

    Martyn Hughes, watch manager at Skipton Fire Station, posted pictures of the recovery effort on Twitter saying: "The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the tree is removed."

    Two women, including one from Lancashire, who lost legs after a crash on a ride at Alton Towers are suing the park's owners, their lawyers have said.

    Vicky Balch, 23, of Leyland, and Leah Washington, 20, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, were in the front seats of the Smiler ride which rammed into a stationary carriage in June 2015.

    They could each receive "well in excess of £2m" in compensation if the High Court claim is successful.

    The women are suing Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd for negligence and or breach of statutory duty.

    Talks to try to resolve strikes on Northern rail have broken down without reaching agreement.

    The company and representatives of the RMT union have been at ACAS for discussions about the dispute over whether guards should be used on services in the future.

    No further talks are planned and another 24-hour strike is due to take place on Saturday.

    An Acas spokesperson said: “Following a second day of Acas talks, Arriva Northern Rail and RMT were unable to make any progress in resolving their dispute."

    The vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford has announced that he is to step down at the end of the current academic year.

    Professor Brian Cantor, who was appointed in 2013, will leave the university to become Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford.

    The announcement comes on the same day that Unison members at the university have voted to strike over job cuts there.

    Professor Cantor said: "We have had to put growth on hold because of difficult external circumstances, leading to the management changes currently underway.

    "I want to help see through these changes, which are essential for the future strength of the University.”

  7. Power cut hits 1,500 properties in Harrogatepublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    There's currently a power cut in the Harrogate area which is affecting around 1,520 properties.

    Northern Power Grid says its aware of the unplanned power cut which has left homes and businesses in the HG2 and HG3 postcodes without electricity.

    It says there has been an "unexpected problem with the cables or equipment" which serve the area.

    The electricity distributor say it is working to restore power "as quickly as possible" and estimates the power will be back on by about 17:00.

    Police are looking for a man who is suspected of pulling a knife on a woman in Hull and demanding her phone.

    She was walking near the corner of Gloucester Street and Hessle Road on 25 August when he allegedly approached her holding a "small knife".

    Humberside Police say the woman refused to give up her phone and the man left the area.

    The man is described as around 20-years-old, slim and about 5ft 8ins tall.

    Tonight's event marks a year since the first lorries carrying fracking equipment drove onto the site at Kirby Misperton.

    Earlier today two senior figures resigned from Third Energy - a firm which wants to carry out fracking in North Yorkshire.

    Doncaster Council bosses have promised an overhaul of the way they handle care assessments and housing adaptation requests after they "failed" the family of a severely disabled child, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Mum Hayley Swinson-Jones, 35, from Thorne, complained to the Local Government Ombudsman after the council refused to adapt her home for her severely disabled son.

    Eight-year-old Joel had to sleep in a dining room because the house wasn't adapted for his needs.

    Full-time carer Hayley has been battling the council for four years to get changes made to the home.

    She also suffers from back pain from having to move Joel without a hoist.

    Damien Allen, the lead council officer in charge of children's services, told a cabinet meeting work was underway to adapt the home and £1,500 has been provided to the family for respite care.

    He said the council has met and apologised to the family in person and sent a formal apology admitting their failures.

    The cost of redeveloping Barnsley town centre is expected to spiral to almost £180m, according to the council leader.

    There'll be a new market complex, shops, a new central library, a cinema and other leisure attractions.

    Sir Steve Houghton, the leader of Barnsley Council, says it's more money than they anticipated but that's because plans have changed.

    "Originally we talked about £150m for the scheme.

    "The cinema has since increased in size, so that's good news. It's not just extra cost, we're getting something for that.

    "We're looking at extending the public realm works. We don't want to have this great new facility in the middle and the rest of the town looking tired."

    A teenager's being treated in hospital for serious head injuries after being involved in a collision with a pick-up vehicle in North Yorkshire.

    It happened shortly after 08:00 yesterday morning on Cordike Lane in Langton, near Malton, and involved a green Toyota Hilux and a pedal cycle.

    The Toyota was travelling from the direction of Eddlethorpe towards Langton and the bike in the direction from Burythorpe towards Acklam.

    The rider of the pedal cycle, an 18-year-old man from the Malton area, was airlifted to Hull Royal Infirmary with serious head injuries.

    The occupants of the Toyota, a male driver and male passenger, were uninjured in the incident.

    The road was closed until about midday on Tuesday to allow police to work at the scene.

    Anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw the cycle or Toyota before the collision is being asked to get in touch with police.

    More than 3,000 people have visited a flower festival in Pocklington commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

    A yellow "be aware" weather warning for strong winds has been issued for across Yorkshire by the Met Office.

    Large parts of the country will be affected this evening by "potentially very strong winds" reaching up to 50mph.

    There is a chance buildings could be damaged by the weather and people should be aware of the potential dangers the wind might cause, the Met Office says.

    A missing 16-year-old boy from Northamptonshire could be in North Yorkshire, police say.

    Officers have been searching for Dorel Owens since he went missing from his home in Northampton on 8 September.

    A woman from Barnsley who lost part of her leg after a crash on a ride at Alton Towers is suing the park's owners, her lawyers have said.

    They could each receive "well in excess of £2m" in compensation if the High Court claim is successful.

    The women are suing Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd for negligence and or breach of statutory duty.

    Merlin said it was "on standby to conclude settlement discussions on the outstanding claims as soon as they are ready".

    The Staffordshire theme park owner has already admitted breaching the Health and Safety Act, and was fined £5m in September 2016.

  19. New witness appeal over fatal lorry house crashpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 19 September 2018

    A fresh appeal for people who saw a lorry which ploughed into the side of a house and killed a woman and injured three other people in Barnsley has been made by police.

    The HGV (pictured) crashed into the house in Brierley at about 13:40 last Friday.

    South Yorkshire Police say they want anyone who saw the vehicle in the days leading up to the collision to get in touch with them.

    An officer in a marked patrol car was following the lorry when it hit 58-year-old Jacqueline Wileman before crashing into two cars and the house, police say.

    Four men have been charged with aggravated vehicle-taking.and appeared before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Monday.

    All four have been remanded into custody and are due to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 15 October.
