    However:

    A Rotherham charity shop has been robbed at knife-point in what police describe as an "incredibly traumatic" incident.

    It happened at about 15:30 on Monday.

    A man is said to have been riding a child's scooter outside the Salvation Army shop on Laughton Road in Dinnington before pulling out a knife and demanding money from staff.

    The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 to 23-years-old, about 5ft 8ins tall and of a "plump" build, say police.

    Police are appealing for information, saying despite no injuries it was "understandably incredibly traumatic for staff members".

    A family from West Yorkshire say they've been left "heartbroken" after their family pet was tasered and killed by police.

    Terrasa Bolton's American Bulldog ran barking into the garden at the family's house in Leeds when officers arrived to arrest her boyfriend who was wanted by police.

    Officers say they "feared for their safety" and fired the electroshock weapon in order to "subdue the dog".

    Miss Bolton, who says officers "overreacted," is still waiting for her pet to be returned by the police.

  5. Watch: Burping bubble bins launched in Leedspublished at 18:00

    Burping and bubble-blowing machines which offer rewards for recycling are being tried out in Leeds as part of a new scheme.

    The #LeedsByExample project is claimed to be the UK's biggest push to improve recycling beyond people's homes.

    A 65-year-old woman has been assaulted while out walking a friend's dog on her mobility scooter.

    The victim was on Inglemire Lane, between Beverley Road and Cranbrook Avenue, at about 08:00 on Monday evening when the attack took place.

    She was approached by a man who spoke to her then hit her causing pain in her, neck, face and shoulder as well as swelling in her cheek.

    Her attacker has been described as white, in his 40s, about 5ft 10ins tall, stocky and wearing dark clothing and a beanie hat.

    It’s thought the suspect may have known the woman and police are appealing for witnesses.

    Cutting the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph in parts of Wakefield will "make people safer", the city's transport chief has said, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Councillor Matthew Morley said the measures would reassure pedestrians near schools, town centres and densely populated residential areas where the restrictions will be put in place.

    Wakefield Council will now write to the police to ask them to enforce the limits when they are changed in individual areas.

    Similar action has been taken in Calderdale and Leeds in recent years, with a Wakefield paper on the policy citing evidence from Calderdale showing a "significant reduction in casualties, strong public support, and positive police engagement".

  10. Scarborough hit-and-run leaves man seriously hurtpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 9 October 2018

    A man's been seriously injured following a hit-and-run in North Yorkshire.

    It happened on Princess Street in Scarborough at about 22:30 on Sunday night and saw a 52-year-old man hit by a small, blue, older-looking car.

    He was left with a fractured right ankle, facial injuries and was taken to Scarborough District Hospital.

    The car driver didn't stop and drove off down St Sepulchre Street.

    More than £1m has been spent on providing temporary accommodation in the past financial year across North Yorkshire, according to figures obtained by the BBC.

    Figures reveal that in Harrogate nearly £11,000 was spent in four months on just three people, more than £880 a month per person.

    Harrogate Council say its temporary accommodation is "inadequate," so people have to be put up in bed and breakfasts.

    North Yorkshire officials are running a new strategy called Safe which hopes to keep vulnerable people off the streets by giving them intensive support on how to live independently.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a gun was fired in Huddersfield last night.

    An 18-year-old was injured in the incident on Edgerton Grove Road in Marsh at about 23:15 on Monday.

    His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    Anyone who witnessed this incident is being asked to get in touch with police.

    Police are looking for 86-year-old Gordon Kissell, who went missing from Castle Hill hospital in Cottingham earlier today.

    Mr Kissell had gone to the hospital for a heart check-up and a taxi was arranged to pick him up at about 10:00, but he never got in the cab and he hasn't arrived home.

    He's described as white with a bald head and a bit of grey hair around the back.

    He's about 5ft 7ins tall and wears glasses.

    He had a lilac shirt on, beige trousers, and a brown overcoat.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

    Police are appealing for information after a 29-year-old man was knocked unconscious in the centre of Richmond.

    Emergency crews reported a serious assault on a man who was found with injuries to his head, outside the Town Hall Hotel in the Market Place, in the early hours of Friday 5 October.

    He was taken to hospital for surgery on a fractured cheekbone.

    Police say they want to speak to a man who may have information about the incident.

    He's described as 5ft 9ins tall, with dark hair and he was wearing a black t-shirt with a shiny logo on the front.

    TransPennine, external trains has announced a new compensation scheme for customers affected by recent timetable changes.

    Non-season ticket holders who were affected by the disruption are being given the chance to apply for a full refund on specific routes across the north of England.

    Anyone who travelled between three and five days consecutively within a week between 20 May and 30 June will be eligible to apply for a refund.

    Applicants will need to provide proof of travel to show they travelled on at least three consecutive days and successful applications will receive a full refund via bank transfer.

    Five members of a criminal gang based in Hull have been jailed for a total of 52-and-a-half years for drugs and firearms offences.

    Liam Windass (pictured), 27, admitted conspiracy to supply firearms, conspiracy to supply heroin, money laundering and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

    He was jailed for 24 years.

    Zia Malik, Asphand Malik, Billy Wilkinson and Spencer Moodie were also given long prison terms ranging from five and a half years to 11 years.

    The group dealt in guns, heroin and cannabis worth hundreds of thousands of pounds from houses across west Hull.

    Sentencing, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said a major criminal operation had been thwarted by "first-class policing":

  20. GPs should 'prescribe activities' - Bradford Uni studypublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 9 October 2018

    GPs should prescribe activities such as book clubs or coffee mornings to help patients, a study carried out by the University of Bradford has suggested.

    The study says this could reduce the risk of patients needing emergency hospital treatment.

    The Bradford University study focused on a doctor's surgery in Somerset, where emergency admissions went down by 14% after patients were encouraged to take part in these activities.
