  17. York psychologists reveal humans recognise 5,000 facespublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 10 October 2018

Research carried out in York has found that people can remember on average...wait for it...about 5,000 faces!

    FacesImage source, University of York

A team from the University of York asked people how many faces they remembered from their personal lives and the media, as well as the number of famous faces they recognised.

They say humans have typically lived in small groups of about 100 individuals, but their study suggests facial recognition abilities enable us to deal with thousands of faces on our screens as well as in the real world.

Doctor Rob Jenkins, from the University of York, said: "Our study focused on the number of faces people actually know – we haven't yet found a limit on how many faces the brain can handle.

For the study, participants spent an hour writing down as many faces from their lives as possible, including people they went to school with, colleagues and family. They did the same for famous faces, such as actors, politicians, and other public figures.

"It would be interesting to see whether there's a peak age for the number of faces we know”, Doctor Jenkins added.

"Perhaps we accumulate faces throughout our lifetimes, or perhaps we start to forget some after we reach a certain age."
