  1. New sketch of last British soldier killed in WW1published at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2018

Remember the story of the last British soldier killed in action during World War One?

A plaque was unveiled to Pte George Edwin Ellison, from Leeds, last week at the railway station.

The only surviving image of Pte Ellison, who was born in York, was a very small, unclear, grainy picture from an old newspaper.

Suman Kaur, the Leeds-based artist and winner of The BBC's Big Painting Challenge in 2017, has produced a new charcoal drawing after consulting the newspaper clipping held at Leeds Central Library.

It took her about two hours to sketch Pte Ellison.

She said the sketch is not "overly detailed" as she didn't wish to add anything to the original image.

She is now keen to donate the drawing to a suitable home.

Leeds City Council is set to talk about the plans for the 358 new houses across the city next week, following a relaxing of government rules on borrowing to fund new homes.

The majority of cash to build the houses will come from a government pot of money, known as a Housing Revenue Account.

Further money will come from a grant and the rest, about £10m, will come from money the council made through the sales of houses through the Right to Buy scheme.

Where will the new house be built?

Local residents say the "shameful piece" which ran on Russia Today (RT) presented an unfair picture of the city.

Critics of the broadcaster, which is paid for by President Putin's government, say the channel's aim is to paint a negative image of countries like Britain.

Jerome Whittingham, who runs the Hull Is This website, said: "We are a much better city than we are portrayed in this piece."

It is unclear why the TV piece, looking at the Universal Credit benefits system, was filmed in Hull.

A woman watches RT on an iPad

Anna Sorokina-Whiting, who was born in Russia but now lives in Hull, said: "We were quite surprised about it.

"Not many English people know where Hull is, so that much attention from this channel raises concerns."

Asked by the BBC why Hull had been chosen for the report, a spokesman said: "At RT, we believe that all viewpoints are of value.

"I guess that's one of the ways we differ from the BBC."

Mrs Mulligan is due at a meeting of North Yorkshire's police and crime panel tomorrow where she'll face its members for the first time since it ruled she "displayed bullying behaviour" towards an employee.

Humberside Police officers will also use the spray, known as the Offender Tagging Device or OTD, to identify motorcyclists who ride in an anti-social manner in Hull.

All 75 PCSOs in the city have been equipped with the hand-held spray, which will be used on riders or motorcycles.

The OTD spray can be used to identify a suspect if they're arrested at a later date and it has already led to one stolen bike being recovered, the force says.

The number of motorbikes being stolen in Hull has dropped by more than 76% in the last two years, Humberside Police adds.

About 13,000 people attended the first street food event in Trinity Square before it was moved due to police fears over "too many access points for a vehicle to be driven at speed".

Councillors have now approved plans for Hull Street Food Nights to return to its original location in the shadow of Hull Minster.

Hull Business Improvement District (BID) team spoke to counter-terrorism services in order to ensure all the relevant safety measures would be in place to protect members of the public.
